For Gilles Deleuze's two essays ‘Causes and Reasons of Desert Islands’ and ‘Michel Tournier and the World Without Others’, the crucial question is what the perception is, what its fundamental conditions are. A desert island can be a place to experiment on this question. The types of perception are described in many critical works about the history of art and aesthetical reflections by artists. So I will try to retrace some types of perception especially linked to the ‘haptic’, the importance (...) of which was rediscovered by Deleuze. The ‘haptic’ proposes a type of perception not linked to space, but to time in its aspects of genesis. And something incorporeal has to intervene in a very original stage of perception and of perception of time. Thus we will be able to capture some links between the fundamental aspects of perception and time in its ‘out of joint’ aspects (Aion). (shrink)

The role of figurative languages such as metaphor and metonymy in creativity has been studied in cognitive linguistics. These methods can also be applied to analyze non-linguistic data such as pictures and gestures. In this paper we analyze fashion design by focusing on visual metaphor and metonymy. The nature of creativity in fashion design is not fully studied from a cognitive perspective compared to other related fields such as art. We especially focus on the aspect of fashion design as a (...) communication tool between the designer and the audience to convey designer’s image of human. Photos from two fashion shows are analyzed. We carried out an experiment to compare how human images in two shows are interpreted by those who are familiar with fashion and those who are not. We got three results: (1) As far as figurative (metaphorical and metonymic) interpretations of human image are concerned, two groups with different familiarity to fashion have significantly different patterns of responses to two shows. (2) For non-figurative interpretations (such as physical or personal attributes), no significant difference in the pattern of response to the show was observed between two groups. The participants as a whole, however, responded to the two shows differently. (3) In addition for non-figurative interpretation, fashion experts found significantly more attributes in human images than the others. The results show that the analysis of figurative interpreations is effective in seeing how the familiarity to fashion affects the mode of seeing fashion shows. (shrink)

John Henry Newman’s educational ideas, which first became known in Japan before the Pacific War, continue to attract followers, especially as a result of the foundation of the Newman Society of Japan in 1983. However, this interest in Newman has had mixed results: on the one hand, some Japanese secular scholars who have tried to adopt Newman’s educational ideas to Japanese higher education do not seem interested in Catholicism. Yet, when translating Deleuze and other authors into another language, whatever this may be, it’s also important to translate the text’s voice, along with all the underlying voices it bears within it. The Japanese Collection of Newman Studies was donated to the National Institute for Newman Studies in 2015. The collection is made up of books, articles, newsletters, handwritten letters, postcards and photocopies underpinning the history of the Japanese reception of the spirit and ideas of John Henry Newman. This article presents the work of the main donor of the collection, Reiko Nagakura (1935-2016), and a brief history of Newman Studies in Japan.

The studies on the cAMP‐requiring mutants and their suppressors in the yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, revealed that cAMP‐dependent protein phosphorylation is involved in the G1 phase of the cell cycle, in conjugation, and in the post‐meiotic stage of sporulation, and that inhibition of cAMP‐dependent protein phosphorylation is required to induce meiotic division.

Using the dual-route reading model as a framework, this study investigated the following research questions on Hangul reading: Which orthographic units influence the reading performance of Korean-speaking children? In addition, do the influential units change as the children grow up? To answer these questions, we tested the effects of age, frequency, lexicality, and two types of length—the numbers of letters and syllable blocks —and the interactions of these factors in the reading performance of Korean-speaking preschool and primary school children from (...) first to third grade. Regarding reading latencies, there was a significant three-way interaction of age × lexicality × length regardless of the type of length. This interaction indicated that, for words only, the interaction between age and length was significant. Accordingly, the length effect decreased as children’s age increased. When reading latencies for words were analyzed with a mixed-effect model consisting of three factors—age, frequency, and length—neither a main effect of syllable block length nor an interaction of syllable block length with age was significant. In contrast, the interaction of age × letter length in word reading latencies remained significant. The length effect was smaller as children’s age increased. In addition, the frequency effect was significant and interacted significantly with age. The frequency effect increased as children’s age increased. In conclusion, significant frequency effects indicate that Korean-speaking children use the lexical process in addition to the non-lexical process when reading Hangul words. Importantly, as children grow up, a larger orthographic unit, that is, words, is more strongly related to reading performance, whereas the influence of the smaller orthographic unit, that is, letters, decreases. Some individuals with developmental dyslexia show dissociation in reading skills between languages. The occurrence of dissociation depends on differences in the orthographic characteristics and cognitive demands of languages. This article reports on a Korean–Japanese bilingual and biliterate boy, SJ, with developmental dyslexia, who displayed dissociation between Korean and Japanese in reading and writing accuracy. This study aimed to discuss possible accounts for the profile of his literacy skills from orthographic and cognitive perspectives. To accomplish this aim, we measured SJ’s literacy (...) skills, receptive vocabulary, and cognitive abilities in both Korean and Japanese. Then, we compared his skills to those of monolingual and bilingual children. In terms of accuracy, his reading skills in Korean did not differ significantly from those of bilinguals, although they were lower than Korean monolinguals. His spelling skills were within the average range for Korean monolinguals and bilinguals. In contrast, his reading and writing accuracy levels in Japanese were low compared to both Japanese monolinguals and bilinguals. Moreover, his reading and writing deficits were more remarkable in Japanese kanji. However, his cognitive profile was similar between languages. Specifically, he showed deficits in phonological skills and naming speed in both languages, as well as deficits in visual skills. These results were explained by the facts that visual skills are one of the significant predictors of reading and writing accuracy in Japanese but not in Korean, and that visual skills are a key in learning kanji. Thus, our case, SJ, supports the cognitive account, namely, the idea that different cognitive demands on the development of literacy skills can cause dissociation in literacy skills in bilingual children. In recent decades there has been increasing demand for and considerable efforts to conduct cross-disciplinary research. However, assessment of research quality in such endeavours still is often based on mono-disciplinary criteria and not seldom carried out by reviewers without strong cross-disciplinary experience. The authors suggest a two-pronged approach to cross-disciplinary research evaluation. One part should comprise an individual review of all the disciplines involved based on their mono-disciplinary sets of criteria. The other part should be a separate evaluation of the (...) cross-disciplinary aspects based on the review of “problem formulation”, “integration and scope of the disciplines”, “parts and the whole”, “practical managerial aspects” and “the applied aspects”. The pros and cons of implementing this approach in a stepwise manner or simultaneously is discussed. It is suggested that funding agencies develop more fair sets of review procedures for cross-disciplinary research and show willingness to allocate extra funds and time to such forms of research that sometimes are regarded as relatively more “risky” than conventional mono-disciplinary types. Background Over-/undertreatment are pervasive in older adults with cancer, and challenges arise in applying the principles of bioethics: beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice, and patient autonomy. The objective of this study was to determine whether these ethical principles relate to over-/undertreatment for older adults, and how tensions among the principles may contribute. Methods We conducted a modified Delphi study with 13 experts in biomedical ethics for iterative rounds of data collection. In the first round, we presented via electronic questionnaire our previously published (...) definitions of over-/undertreatment in older adults with cancer. We then asked which ethical principles related to each definition, followed by how over-/undertreatment might arise from conflicts among different ethical principles. Consensus for each question was defined as ≥ 75% of experts answering “agree” or “strongly agree”. The second round consisted of a virtual discussion with nine of the panel experts led by a qualitative researcher to summarize round one results and review questions that did not reach consensus, followed by a second questionnaire including those questions. Findings Experts reached consensus that beneficence, non-maleficence, and autonomy were related to over-/undertreatment in older adults with cancer. Consensus was reached (92%) that overtreatment can occur when oncologists overemphasize beneficence valuing the potential benefit of cancer treatments, while underemphasizing non-maleficence with respect to treatment toxicities. Consensus was also reached (85%) that undertreatment reflects a lack of justice in equitable consideration of cancer treatments that could provide similar net benefits in older adults compared to younger adults. Lastly, consensus was reached that, in most cases, it is unethical to make a treatment recommendation without (1) formal assessment of patient frailty (e.g., via a geriatric assessment) or (2) the opportunity for the patient to share their values, goals, and preferences. Interpretation Our findings elucidate the ethical principles underpinning over- and undertreatment in older adults with cancer. (shrink)

Formaban el jurado Vicente Barbieri, Francisco Luis Bernárdez, Leónidas Barletta, Ricardo Molinari y Adolfo Bioy Casares. Libro inaugural, Uno y el Universo se resume en su título: en concisa brevedad, pulida y bruñida, de epigramas o cápsulas verbales, Sabato repasa, por riguroso orden alfabético, con voluntad sistemática a la que con frecuencia no es ajena la ironía, (...) todo un vasto catálogo de temas que van desde la anécdota cotidiana a lo más amplio del cosmos. Tal pesquisa es sustentada por la insobornable honestidad humana, la lucidez crítica y la hondura y amplitud de visión que, confirmadas a lo largo de toda su obra, asegurarían a Sabato un papel central en nuestra escritura contemporánea. El falso problema del Uno. Las nociones conexas de orden y de unidad se encuentran presentes ya en el pensamiento quodidià. Un mueble tan familiar como un armario ofrece un haz de sugerencias metafísicas sobre las cosas, el lugar de las cosas y los nombres de los lugares de las cosas. Agustín pensaba probablemente en el armario de su madre cuando propuso su bella definición de orden: ordo este parium disparium que rerum sudo cuique loco tribuens dispositio.Filosóficamente, el Uno compareció (...) con agresividad despreciativa; pretendió tiranizar el entero campo del ser y del pensamiento. Una oportuna ejecución dramática de Platón, el llamado "parricidio de Parménides", restituyó al Uno su retirada con un armario bien ordenado. El gran sima metafísico de Platón fue el establecimiento de la insoslayable correlatividad de los grandes metaconceptes de unidad y de pluralidad, ellos mismos un caso de lo esencial relatividad de los conceptos metafísicos en general.Platón procede a aplicar su doctrina lógico-metafísica a la explicación racional del mundo físico, aduciendo los conceptos correlativos de límite y de ilimitado. Tenemos un resumen de este intento en la descripción de la filosofía platónica de la naturaleza en el libro de la Metafísica de Aristóteles. De acuerdo con Platón, los únicos conceptos limitados que somos capaqos de aplicar al mundo sensible son nociones matemáticas. Entonces, la estructura lógico-metafísica de las ciencias físicas está compuesta única y exclusivamente de nociones aritméticas y geométricas.El Uno hipostático de las filosofías religiosas. El Uno como absoluto, desterrado por el último Platón, reapareció en las filosofías religiosas del neoplatonismo, tipológicamente conectadas con la gnosis filosófica. Encontramos especulaciones muy abstractas sobre el Uno en los Vedas, en el gnosticismo cristiano, en el neoplatonismo tarde. La terminología transcendentista y apofática de estos movimientos filosóficos ofrece sorprendentes paralelismos. Todos ellos, sin embargo, están de acuerdo en la definitiva inefabilidad del Uno. Debemos recorrer, pues, al expediente platónico: ya que no somos capaces de hablar de la U, hablaremos del hijo de I'U. El hijo de I'U, el Uno encarnado, tuvo un nacimiento terrenal y una historia temporal. Pues el Protogonos del Uno es el metro, el patrón fundamental del sistema métrico decimal.El Uno-relación del sistema métrico decimal. Partiendo del eje reflexivo que brinda la ambigüedad de la Cultura como atolladero y trascendencia de los individuos, el presente estudio toma dos circunstancias de nuestra situación cultural (hipersubjetividad y superconductividad) como base para una reflexión en torno a las posibles deformaciones del proceso postmoderno de personalización y sobre sus correspondientes enmiendas -mediación densa (resistencia), inspiración (recogimiento) y ruptura de la inmanencia (responsabilidad)-, que puedan reorientar el desarrollo del individuo como Uno entre Otros.

Che cosa distingue, concettualmente, l’esattore delle tasse che esiga da un uomo, a pena di sanzioni, una determinata somma di denaro, dal bandito che gli intimi, sotto la minaccia di un’arma, di consegnargli la medesima somma? È sul soddisfacimento del requisito della giustizia che si fonda, come sostenne Agostino, l’eterogeneità tra uno Stato e un’accolita di furfanti? «Se non è rispettata la giustizia, che cosa sono gli Stati, se non delle grandi bande di ladri? Il volume ripercorre le risposte più autorevoli fornite nel XX secolo, entro un orizzonte postmetafisico, alla domanda agostiniana: prima dell’avvento del regime nazista, la tesi che un’associazione a delinquere sia indistinguibile da uno Stato è stata sostenuta da Benedetto Croce, Santi Romano e Hans Kelsen; dopo l’esperienza del nazismo e delle sue atrocità, perpetrate in nome dello Stato e della legge, le questioni relative alla natura del diritto e alla relazione tra morale e diritto hanno assunto – come ha osservato Robert Alexy – «l’urgenza di un problema scottante», e la domanda filosofica sulla validità della legge ingiusta è apparsa ineludibile non solo ai maggiori filosofi del diritto (Herbert L.H. La presente monografía es la primera en toda la literatura especializada que analiza el problema multifacético de los muchos nombres (πολυωνυμία) del Dios uno supremo en el pensamiento de Heráclito de Éfeso. La base filológica de este libro es un estudio publicado por el autor en 2023 (ut infra), en el que estableció claramente el sentido del fragmento B67. Demostró que, aceptando el punto y coma de Bernays (·), refiriendo ὀνομάζεται únicamente a ὁ Θεός y respetando el verdadero sentido del (...) sustantivo ἡδονή (‘placer’, ‘Wohlgefallen’ y no “olor”, “Duft”), se llega a una traducción adecuada de la última parte de este aforismo de Heráclito: ὁ Θεός … ὀνομάζεται καθ' ἡδονὴν ἑκάστου, “Dios … es nombrado según el placer de cada uno” y no –como pensó Diels aliique permulti– “[…] das Feuer, das […] nach dem Duft […] benannt wird”. Esta reconstrucción y exégesis de la teosofía del Efesio (cuya obra nos ha llegado sólo a través de fragmentos y testimonios) constituye un gran avance –completamente documentado a partir de las fuentes disponibles– en el difícil estudio del pensamiento no sólo de Heráclito, sino también de los demás sabios jónicos. Pero aquí, además de analizar la razón de ser originaria de ese arquetipo y su modo de operar dentro del contexto epistémico en el que efectivamente surgió, también aludiremos al modo en que (...) ese modelo pudo pasar a ser considerado, no ya como una idealización, o una abstracción metodológicamente operativa, sino como una aproximación a una entidad real que debía ser individualizada y debidamente descripta. Entre los documentos relativos a artistas españoles conservados en la Biblioteca Cervelló del Museo del Prado se encuentra un conjunto de papeletas inéditas con información biográfica y artística sobre grabadores españoles activos a finales del siglo XVIII y comienzos del siglo XIX. Las papeletas fueron redactadas hacia 1865-68 por Ramón Sanjuanena y Nadal, colaborador de la Revista El Arte en España, y suponen un intento de continuación del Diccionario de Ceán, quién no incluyó en su obra a los artistas vivos. Las papeletas recogen por primera vez la documentación conservada en el archivo de la Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, y anticipan lo que publicará Ossorio una década más tarde en su Galería biográfica. Resumen: El objetivo de esta contribución es el de realizar una valoración del trabajo de Maria Medina-Vicent Mujeres y discursos gerenciales: hacia la autogestión feminista. En el texto se describirá la importancia que tienen las ideologías gerenciales como articuladoras del discurso pro-empresarial contemporáneo para, a continuación, señalar las principales contribuciones del libro de Medina-Vicent, que son la de no solo criticar el peculiar tipo de feminismo presente en los libros de literatura empresarial dirigidos a mujeres, sino proponer una reversión de (...) los discursos neoliberales sostenida en las aportaciones de la teoría feminista.: This contribution aims at making an assessment of the work of Maria Medina-Vicent Mujeres y discursos gerenciales: hacia la autogestión feminista. The text will describe the importance of managerial ideologies as articulators of contemporary pro-business discourses. Besides, the main contributions of Medina-Vicent’s book will be highlighted. Those are not only the critique of the peculiar type of feminism underpinning in management books addressed to women, but also the proposal of a feminist theory-based rejection of neoliberal discourses. En 2016 se hizo pública una nueva técnica para editar genes: la CRISPR-Cas9. Cinco años después es posible dar una mirada que desde la Bioética examine el desarrollo de esta biotecnología. Es constatable que la técnica de edición de genes en la línea somáticas se ha difundido y está empezando a mostrar algunos resultados. Sin embargo, a pesar de ellos no es posible extender ese trabajo a las líneas germinales a través de la edición hereditaria del genoma humano. Se estudian (...) dos documentos, el informe de la Comisión Internacional para el Uso Clínico de la Edición del Genoma Humano (2020) y el informe de recomendaciones del Comité Asesor de Expertos en el Desarrollo de Estándares Globales para la Gobernanza y Supervisión de la Edición del Genoma Humano de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (2021) y se reflexiona sobre su contenido y sus consecuencias.
