Drawing from Goffman’s original observations on stigma and the consequences of interactions between the stigmatized and supportive or stigmatizing audiences, we conduct a 20-year review of the diverse literature on stigma to revisit the collective nature of stigmatization processes. We find that studies on stigma’s origins, responses, processes, and outcomes have diverged from Goffman’s relational view of stigma as they have overlooked important relational mechanisms explaining the processes of (de)stigmatization. We draw from those conclusions to justify the need to study (...) stigma as a collective phenomenon. We develop a relational perspective on stigma based on understanding how attributes are stigmatized (or not) by audiences in their interactions. We argue that to advance stigma research, it is necessary to build on Goffman’s theory to include the stigmatizers (i.e., the normal) and supporters (i.e., the wise); how they create, sustain, or remove stigma; and how they relate to the stigmatized (i.e., the targets). Accordingly, we provide a research agenda on stigma as a collective phenomenon that theorizes a relational perspective, proposes a typology of how audiences relate to stigmatization, and identifies patterns of relations between audiences. We thus offer a missing piece to existing accounts of stigma by focusing on the key role of audiences (i.e., stigmatizers or supporters of the stigmatized) rather than on the targets of stigma (i.e., the own). Peto's paradox (Pp) results from the evidence that in mammals there is no obvious positive correlation between body size, lifespan, and cancer incidence. Posing the question of which mechanisms are responsible for this. Comparative studies searching for specific anticancer mechanisms as putative solutions to Pp have been undertaken in mammals. The result of these efforts are further inconsistencies leading to ad‐hoc hypotheses and unnecessary complexity. In contrast to this, we present evidence that the cellular stress responses (CSRs), aimed at curtailing (...) proteotoxic stress and assuring cell survival are necessary for enabling carcinogenesis. Yet, natural selection adjusts the performance of the CSRs according to the life history of each species and because of this, cancer is mostly delayed to the post‐reproductive stage in all mammalian species, resulting in a limited impact of cancer on species fitness and viability. From this perspective, the need of evolving anticancer mechanisms, suggested by Pp is weakened or disappears and the paradox is likely resolved. (shrink)

In his Doppelvortrag, Edmund Husserl introduced two concepts of “definiteness” which have been interpreted as a vindication of his role in the history of completeness. Some commentators defended that the meaning of these notions should be understood as categoricity, while other scholars believed that it is closer to syntactic completeness. A detailed study of the early twentieth-century axiomatics and Husserl’s Doppelvortrag shows, however, that many concepts of completeness were conflated as equivalent. Although “absolute definiteness” was principally an attempt to characterize (...) non-extendible manifolds and axiom systems, an absolutely definite theory has a unique model and, thus, it is non-forkable and semantically complete. Non-forkability and decidability were formally delimited by Fraenkel and Carnap almost three decades later and, in fact, they mentioned Husserl as precursor of the latter. Therefore, this paper contributes to a reassessment of Husserl’s place in the history of logic. (shrink)

Considering recent theoretical discussions about the concept of moral legitimacy, this study advances our understanding of its performance consequences. Specifically, it uncovers the mediating role of moral legitimacy in the relationship between regulations and industry performance. Our analysis of the U.S. state-level data on regulations in a controversial industry between 1994 and 2010 yields four significant findings. The results show that regulations not only decrease performance but also negatively impact moral legitimacy. Moreover, this study provides empirical evidence that moral legitimacy (...) is positively related to industry performance, providing much-needed direct support for this premise. Importantly, the results indicate that moral legitimacy mediates the effect of regulations on performance, but only when regulations are aligned with moral values. Overall, this study extends our understanding of how regulations influence moral legitimacy, and in turn impact industry performance. (shrink)

Two hundred years after Darwin’s birth, the evolution of living systems is an accepted fact but there is scope for controversy on the mechanisms involved in such a process. Mainstream neo-Darwinism champions the role of natural selection (NS) as the fundamental cause of the evolutionary process as well as of random, contingent events at the genetic level as the main source of variation upon which NS performs its causal role. Thus, according to neo-Darwinism the course of biological evolution is quite (...) unpredictable and the past can only be partially reconstructed by means of a historical narrative.This second-class status for biology within the natural sciences as a merely descriptive, historical science results from the chronic neglect of biological form in the neo-Darwinian discourse. Hereunder I discuss the need for reintroducing form as the central object of biology, aiming at the identification of the general and fundamental principles of biological form. Such a formal biology may go beyond simple historical description achieving a complete, rational explanation of how previous and current morphologies corresponding to identifiable species were established, and so providing a rational foundation for predicting the possible outcomes of future biological evolution on earth and perhaps elsewhere in the universe. David Hume's famous riddle of induction implies a second problem related to the question of whether the laws and principles of nature might change in the course of time. Claims have been made that modern developments in physics and astrophysics corroborate the translational invariance of the laws of physics in time. However, the appearance of a new general principle of nature, which might not be derivable from the known laws of physics, or that might actually be a non-physical one (this (...) means completely independent of physical science) supports the notion that the course of nature can change in time. Here it is argued that natural selection satisfies the criteria that identify a general principle of nature which so far, appears to be non-derivable from the known laws of physics and therefore, it is likely that it arose in the course of time, thus leaving open again the quest for a true solution to Hume's second problem. Husserl's two notions of "definiteness" enabled him to clarify the problem of imaginary numbers. The exact meaning of these notions is a topic of much controversy. A "definite" axiom system has been interpreted as a syntactically complete theory, and also as a categorical one. I discuss whether and how far these readings manage to capture Husserl's goal of elucidating the problem of imaginary numbers, raising objections to both positions. Then, I suggest an interpretation of "absolute definiteness" as semantic completeness and (...) argue that this notion does not suffice to explain Husserl's solution to the problem of imaginary numbers. The pragmatist philosopher W. Sellars, in his essay "Philosophy and the Scientific Image of Man", proposed that it would be science, through its theoretical work, that could account for the place of human beings in the world by integrating the conceptual framework of human beings and their relations into a common ontology. We propose to use large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT 3.5, as the most explicit attempt at a theory that could integrate such a conceptual framework of human (...) beings. Given Sellars's interest in the philosophies of Kant and Hegel, we will critique the ambitions of LLMs in Sellars's terms, and the possibility of them moving from models of language to models of knowledge. Our critique will focus on the possibility of a criterion of unity (such as the use of tools that aid inferential reasoning) to avoid hallucinations, as well as the main driver behind the possible transition to models of knowledge. We will point out that this effort lies in the position that Hegel calls subjective idealism, which shows that a principle of explanation cannot be predictive. This will lead to the impossibility of integrating the common ontology proposed by Sellars. (shrink)

The following paper will provide an attempt to philosophically ground the study of games, finding the conditions for a general concept of ‘game’, where such conditions must be able: 1) to delimit what a game is (distinct from another while preserving the same universal features), 2) to provide a demarcative notion (which defines what a game is but also what a game isn’t), and 3) to explain how a game can be constitutive of meaning (that is a kind of content), (...) such that can be subject of analysis independently of an specific context (whilst always presupposing a context that is). The current approach to this philosophical grounding will take inspiration from contemporary epistemology, and philosophy of mind and language. Starting from the analogy of ‘language as a game’ I’ll provide an argument to reverse it so there’s a way to understand ‘game as a language’ and apply several philosophical concepts valid to language analysis. Therefore, my aim is to show that to ground the notion of game, and by extension a general study of games, there is no possible a priori starting point, so a holistic non-reductive approach is a requiremente as well. I’ll show this by underlining the obstacles of choosing an a priori starting point (focused on norms or agency), proposing to understand the constitutive relation between rules and agents as immanent. Resumen La revista Cuadernos (1953-1965) forma parte de una cartografía editorial atravesada, institucionalmente, por la “guerra fría cultural”. Sus directores (Bondy, Gorkin, Araquistain y Arciniegas) definieron una escala conceptual transcontinental en sus tópicos y la elección de los colaboradores. Este trabajo indaga en las representaciones de “lo americano” a través de autores y temas seleccionados que marcaron épocas de publicación en la revista en los ‘50 y ‘60. Su pretensión performativa desnudó la sedimentación conflictiva de lecturas e interpretaciones entre quienes (...) compartieron el momento temporal y el espacio escritural, o “espacio de experiencia”. El diálogo entre la historia de las ideas, la historia cultural y la dimensión histórica “global” facilita abordar historiográficamente esas tecnologías del conocimiento (producción, enunciación, redes de sociabilidad), aplicando las nociones “presente histórico” y “pasado práctico” en las múltiples espacialidades y temporalidades que situaron a Cuadernos en el campo político-cultural de la época. Abstract The journal Cuadernos (1953-1965) is part of an editorial cartography institutionally influenced by the “cultural Cold War”. Its editors (Bondy, Gorkin, Araquistain, Arciniegas) defined a transcontinental conceptual scale in their topics and selection of contributors. This work explores the representations of “Americanism” through selected authors and themes that defined publication periods in the magazine in the 1950s and 1960s. Its performative pretensions exposed the conflicting sedimentation of readings and interpretations among those who shared the same temporal moment and writing space, or “space of experience”. The dialogue between the history of ideas, the cultural history, and the “global” historical dimension facilitates the historiographical approach of these technologies of knowledge (production, enunciation, networks of sociability), by applying the notions “historical present” and “practical past” to the multiple spatialities and temporalities that placed Cuadernos in the political and cultural field of the time. I propose a novel explanation on the nature of fictional entities that fulfills two requirements: it links the production of fictional entities with fiction-making declarations, and it characterizes fictional entities so as to explain the normative attributes that allow fictional entities to interact with our social world. I adopt a realist perspective in which fictional entities are social entities. The explanation combines Abell declarative theory of fictional utterances with Searle’s institutional theory, given that neither theory by itself can satisfy both (...) requirements. The result is an original proposal about the nature of fictional entities, which presents them as social objects produced by declarative speech acts that function as status functionFunctionstatus declarations. This note discusses the importance of Natural History (biology) in the development of Aristotle philosophy and scientific outlook, and so the importance of considering Aristotle's philosophy as a necessary and useful background for contemporary biology.

In this paper, I develop a criticism to a method for metaontology, namely, the idea that a discourse’s or theory’s ontological commitments can be read off its sentences’ truth- conditions. Firstly, I will put forward this idea’s basis and, secondly, I will present the way Quine subscribed to it. However, I distinguish between two readings of Quine’s famous ontological criterion, and I center the focus on the one currently dubbed “ontological minimalism”, a kind of modern Ockhamism applied to the mentioned (...) metaontological view. I show that this view has a certain application via Quinean thesis of reference inscrutability but that it is not possible to press that application any further and, in particular, not for the ambitious metaontological task some authors try to employ. The conclusion may sound promising: having shown the impossibility of a semantic ontological criterion, intentionalist or subjectivist ones should be explored. (shrink)

The aim of this paper is to define a partial Propositional Type Theory. Our system is partial in a double sense: the hierarchy of (propositional) types contains partial functions and some expressions of the language, including formulas, may be undefined. The specific interpretation we give to the undefined value is that of Kleene’s strong logic of indeterminacy. We present a semantics for the new system and prove that every element of any domain of the hierarchy has a name in the (...) object language. Desde 1994, os tratados adquirem uma característica supralegal, no sentido de que ocupam um lugar inferior à Constituição, porém acima das leis e do resto do direito interno. (...) É assim que, como consequência, Argentina se adere ao Pacto de São José da Costa Rica, que no seu artigo 25 estabelece o direito dos indivíduos aos recursos que os protejam contra qualquer tipo de ato que viole ou prejudique seus direitos fundamentais reconhecidos pela Constituição, a lei ou essa mesma convenção.O objetivo deste trabalho é abordar o problema que surge na modalidade de acesso a de alto preço através do processo judicial no nosso país, traçando um breve comentário sobre as políticas de acesso que possuem outros países com o objetivo de pensar e conhecer outras alternativas que possam contribuir à sustentabilidade de um sistema de saúde. The aim of this article is to examine Kierkegaard’s criticism of Metaphysics. Therefore, firstly I will analyze Kierkegaard’s concept of being as interesse (interest), which allows Kerkegaard’s criticism, not just because Metaphysics implies ideality and abstraction, but also because it hides the ethical. That is why I will finally argue the ethical background of the existential thought and its opposition to any tentative of thinking the ethical as a First Philosophy.

Este artículo analiza la incorporación del soft power como elemento de la política exterior de China para América Latina. Sostenemos que China cuenta con soft power y ha desarrollado una estrategia para proyectarlo en el mundo a partir de su política exterior, basándose en su cultura milenaria, en la cooperación internacional hacia los países en desarrollo y en la promoción de su modelo de desarrollo. Asimismo, la inclusión de China del soft power como elemento de su política exterior en la (...) primera mitad de la década de 2000 tendrá efectos medibles en la intensificación de las relaciones con América Latina en la segunda mitad de esa década. Obesity is now commonly recognised to be a significant public health issue worldwide with its increasing prevalence frequently described as a global epidemic. In the United Kingdom, primary care nurses are responsible for weight management through the provision of healthy eating advice and support with lifestyle change. However, nurses themselves are not immune to the persistent and pervasive global levels of weight gain. Drawing on a Gadamerian informed phenomenological study of female primary care nurses in England, this paper considers the (...) complex gendered understandings and experiences of being overweight, and of food and eating. The nurses’ emotional and injurious experiences of being large is found to be capable of producing embodied caring practices, involving a fusion of horizons with patients over how it feels to inhabit a large body. Yet, even though subjected to similar derogatory stereotypes as patients, they simultaneously reinforce the dominant and damaging individualising psychopathology inherent to anti‐obesity discourses. This suggests an urgent need to expose and challenge harmful discourses surrounding women’s body size and weight in order to avoid nursing practices that unthinkingly reproduce culturally dominant and gendered understandings of weight, body size, food and eating. The aim of this paper is to clarify why propositional logic is Post complete and its weak completeness was almost unnoticed by Hilbert and Bernays, while first-order logic is Post incomplete and its weak completeness was seen as an open problem by Hilbert and Ackermman. Thus, I will compare propositional and first-order logic in the Prinzipien der Mathematik, Bernays’s second Habilitationsschrift and the Grundzüge der Theoretischen Logik. Clinician gate-keeping is the process whereby healthcare providers prevent access to eligible patients for research recruitment. This paper contends that clinician gate-keeping violates three principles that underpin international ethical guidelines: respect for persons or autonomy; beneficence or a favourable balance of risks and potential benefits; and justice or a fair distribution of the benefits and burdens of research. In order to stimulate further research and debate, three possible strategies are also presented to eliminate gate-keeping: partnership with professional researchers; collaborative research (...) design and clinician education. The aim of the article is to understand how common good dynamics shape the rural, mainly indigenous municipality of Copanatoyac in Guerrero, Mexico. Based on the data collected in 2022 by the ipbc (Instituto Promotor del Bien Común) research team, we use the common good approach to development to offer a narrative of the municipality’s trends on governance, justice, stability, collective agency, and humanity. After a brief introduction on how a common good approach can help interpret key social processes and (...) development trends, the first part concentrates on what the data shows about the five main triggers of common good dynamics. The second part investigates how Basic Common Goods (bcg) are created, distributed, and governed in the municipality. Our main results are (a) that the modern state and its institutions are not only failing to promote local common good dynamics but are in fact a hindrance to the common good; and (b) that while collective agency to address and solve common problems is high, it reaches its limit in two key domains: the ability to earn enough to live well, and systemic humiliation and injustice. In this essay, Sarah Stitzlein and Amy Rector-Aranda, drawing on John Dewey's theoretical suggestions regarding how to best form publics capable of bringing about change through deliberation and action, offer teachers guidance on how to form and navigate spaces of political protest and become more effective advocates for school reform. Using Aaron Schutz's analysis of teacher activism as a point of departure, Stitzlein and Rector-Aranda argue for the development in schools of “small publics,” that is, Deweyan democratic spaces (...) within which teachers can dialogue and exchange ideas about the problems they face in the classroom. While Schutz treats this type of space merely as a stepping stone toward the real locus of political action, the power public, Stitzlein and Rector-Aranda argue that small publics are themselves important spaces where teachers can work together to frame problems and build coalitions and solidarity with other groups in order to take action in the wider public sphere and bring about change in schools. The Aristotelian axiom that function follows form was beautifully instantiated in molecular biology by the discovery of DNA’s structure that immediately suggested how DNA might work as depository and vehicle for genetic information. However, later on molecular biology became infatuated with the gene that became the center of the universe. This gene-centered viewpoint is an obstacle for the emerging field of evo-devo aiming at finding the causal connections between evolution and biological development. Here it is argued that molecular biology must (...) reject the narrow-minded causality associated with the gene-centered view and so it must recover to the spirit of Aristotelian natural history and its four types of causation in order to foster the evo-devo field of research. Las tesis de Frankfurt serán, posteriormente, contrastadas con el comentario y la disquisición propia que realiza, a propósito del texto de dicho autor, Joseph Raz. The current crisis of Western democracy is caused, at least in part, by the citizens’ ignorance regarding this political regime. Western democracies are indebted to four traditions, namely: ancient Greece, the Roman Republic, Judeo-Christian thought, and Modernity. This work focuses on democracy’s debt to the Christian idea of paradox. I begin this work by looking at the exchange between materialist philosopher, Slavoj Žižek, and radical orthodox, John Milbank, on whether Christianity is best understood in terms of Hegelian dialectics or rather (...) as essentially paradoxical. Subscribing to Milbank’s thesis about the place of paradox in Christianity, I then study the term more deeply in the works of Henri de Lubac (one of Milbank’s main influences) and then apply it to democratic theory in order to show that, without a proper understanding of the place of «paradox» in democracy, it is difficult to see how powerful this political regime is in protecting human beings from autocracy, oppression and, eventually, tyranny. Insight into Lester Embree’s C.V. Recovery and recognition of his inner purpose with regard to his critical detachment from a particular orientation of phenomenology. Phenomenological theory only makes sense as prepa-ration for real practice. When did the view that we, the “soi disant” phenomenologists, are far from the genuine practice of phenomenology arise in Embree? And, who inspired him, apart from Husserl himself? These are key questions to understand unity and inner coherence in Embre’s C.V., and they meet two aims. (...) The first one is to find the link between his initial entry in phenomenology and his critical stance, particularly evident in the last two decades of his life. The second one is to identify who could have been his guide and model‒apart from Husserl‒from the beginning of his life as phenomenologist until his last two decades, when he wrote his comments on pseudophenomenology. In any case, Embree has been a critical voice who compels us to think about the orientation we are giving to the phenomenology inherited from Husserl. He is therefore a brave and honest philosopher, full of great humanity. In addititon to these qualities, it is worth noting both his creative intelligence and foresight to see‒earlier than others‒the evolution followed by phenomenology until now and his valuable multidisciplinary contribution. El segundo objetivo es determinar quién pudo actuar para él —además de Husserl— como guía y modelo desde el comienzo de su vida de fenomenólogo hasta esas dos últimas de su vida en las que escribe sus comentarios sobre la pseudofenomenología. En todo caso, Embree es una voz crítica que nos fuerza a pensar acerca de la trayectoria que nosotros estamos dando a la fenomenología heredada de Husserl. Él es, así, un filósofo valiente y honesto y de una gran humanidad. Se unen a estas cualidades su gran inteligencia creativa y su sorprendente perspicacia para ver —antes que otros— la evolución que ha seguido la fenomenología hasta hoy y la valiosa contribución multidisciplinar actual. En este estudio analizamos dos tendencias claramente distintas y contrapuestas en la forma de impartir cursos elementales de Lógica en la formación superior. Para este propósito, se ha seleccionado una muestra de manuales angloamericanos clásicos, así como otra más pequeña de la tradición iberoamericana para comprobar nuestras hipótesis. Los estilos identificados y analizados en dichos manuales son lo que hemos denominado lógica matemática y lógica para filósofos. En ambos casos se trata de tendencias muy generales reconocibles en las más diversas (...) tradiciones locales. El periodo analizado, 1940-1980, responde al proceso de introducción de la Lógica contemporánea en el ámbito académico occidental. (shrink)

RESUMENEn este ensayo intento pagar una deuda pendiente que todos tenemos con Aron Gurwitsch y recuperar, para nuestra memoria, su importante contribución a la fenomenología durante los años que él estuvo exiliado en Francia (1933-1940). Fue él quien introdujo el pensamiento de Kurt Goldstein en Francia y fue él el primero en comprender (en los años veinte) que estaba naciendo un nuevo enfoque en las ciencias humanas y sociales y que hay una coincidencia entre ellas y la nueva filosofía fenomenológica (...) de Husserl: una tendencia a ir a las cosas tal como son vividas y manejadas por los sujetos. Este espíritu de confluencia entre la fenomenología y las otras ciencias es lo que le transmitió a Maurice Merleau-Ponty, su alumno y contertulio, pero sin que él reconociera nunca en sus escritos a Gurwitsch como una gran «fuente de inspiración» para su pensamiento. Aron Gurwitsch es el primero que hace en Francia, como fenomenólogo, una exposición profunda y sistemática de la fenomenología husserliana. Desde el comienzo él centra su investigación en una fenomenología de la percepción. Los aspectos en los que más focaliza su atención le conducen, ya desde el inicio de su labor investigadora, a sentir una profunda sintonía con el trabajo del netiropsiquiatra Kart Goldstein. Él también el primero que hace en Francia una divulgación del trabajo de este neuropsiquiatra desde la (...) filosofía. De modo que en la obra de Gurwitsch hay dos líneas de investigación que se juntan y que están en él desde el principio: su contacto con el Husserl de Friburgo y su profunda compenetración con él, y su trabajo en Frankfurt con Goldstein y con el psicólogo de la Gestalt que colabora con él: Adhémar Gelb. En esta ponencia intento buscar alguna respuesta a la cuestión de qué ve Gurwitsch en el análisis que hace Goldstein de sus pacientes con lesiones. cerebrales para considerar él que este análisis goldsteniano es extremadamente coincidente con el propio análisis fenomenológico de la percepción de Husserl. El presente trabajo, perteneciente al campo de la ética normativa, tiene como propósito ofrecer una selección de objeciones relevantes al utilitarismo. Dicha selección viene dada por una serie de autores que guardan relación con la heterogénea ética de la virtud. En primer lugar, trataremos sucintamente el utilitarismo viendo en qué consiste en su sentido más general para pasar, en un segundo momento, a atender a ciertas críticas provenientes de Rachels, MacIntyre, Foot y, en especial, de Williams, donde el problema de (...) la integridad se planteará como el nuclear de la presente exposición. A través de tales críticas veremos cómo se va delineando una posición alternativa al utilitarismo que vendrá dada por la ética de la virtud. (shrink)

Starting from David Hume's analysis on the notion of justice in his main work on the topic, his 'Treatise of Human Nature', the author sets out, firstly, to comment on Hume's explanation on the notion of justice as a nonarbitrary artifice resulting from men's conventions, and then to outline the value system which determines the theory of justice of the Scottish philosopher. Finally, a criticism is presented on Hume's supposedly "nonarbitrary" conception of justice and the existing link between his empirical (...) deduction and the nominalist explanation of justice. The author builds a realistic theory of democracy to end the false idea that corruption, state crime, and public immorality are democracy's products, not the natural and inevitable fruits of oligarchic regimes. Important theories of the state and constitution exist, but none can be called a theory of democracy.

This paper aims to queer evidence‐based practice by troubling the concepts of evidence, knowledge and mental illness. The evidence‐based narrative that emerged within biomedicine has dominated health care. The biomedical notion of ‘evidence’ has been critiqued extensively and is seen as exclusive and limiting, and even though the social constructionist paradigm attempts to challenge the authority of biomedicine to legitimate what constitutes acceptable evidence or knowledge for those experiencing mental illness, biomedical notions of evidence appear to remain relatively intact. Queer (...) theory offers theoretical tools to disrupt biomedical norms and challenges biomedical normativity to indicate how marginalisation occurs when normative truths about mental health classify those who differ from the norm as ‘ill’ or ‘disordered’. Queer theory's emphasis on normativity serves the political aim to subvert marginalisation and bring about radical social and material change. Reference will be made to mental health subjects within each discourse by indicating how the body acts as a vehicle for knowing. Deleuzian notions of the rhizome are used as metaphor to suggest a relational approach to knowledge that does away with either/or positions in either biomedical, or queer knowledge to arrive at a both/and position where the biomedical, constructionist and queer are interrelated and entangled in needing the other for their own evolution. However, queer does not ask for assimilation but celebrates difference by remaining outside to disrupt that which is easily overlooked, assumed to be natural or represented as the norm. The task of queer knowledge is to do justice to the lives lived in the name of evidence‐based practice and demands that we consider the relations of power where knowledge is produced. This pursuit creates different knowledge spaces where we identify new intersections that allow for socially just understandings of knowing or evidence to emerge. (shrink)
