In her well-known book, Rasiowa states without proof that in implicative algebras there is a one-to-one correspondence between kernels of epimorphisms and the so-called special implicative filters, and that in the logic whose algebraic counterpart is the class of implicative algebras the deductive filters coincide with the special implicative filters. We show that neither claim is true, and how to repair the situation by redefining some of the notions involved. We answer other questions concerning special (...) class='Hi'>implicative filters, taking the theory of algebraizable logics of Blok and Pigozzi as a framework to approach the question in a systematic way. In this paper, we introduce the notions of -fuzzy filters and -fuzzy Boolean filters in R0-algebras and investigate some of their related properties. Some characterization theorems of these generalized fuzzy filters are derived. In particular, we prove that a fuzzy set in R0-algebras is an -fuzzy Boolean filter if and only if it is an -fuzzy implicative filter. Finally, we consider the concepts of implication-based fuzzy Boolean filters of R0-algebras.

In this paper we introduce n -fold implicative basis logic and the related algebras called n -fold implicative BL-algebras. Also we define n -fold implicative filters and we prove some relations between these filters and construct quotient algebras via these filters.

This paper introduces the Filtered Configuration Framework (FCF), a formal account of how observable structures arise from a broader space of possible configurations. The framework challenges a common assumption in discussions of abiogenesis: that the set of observed biochemical structures reflects the space of locally generable configurations. -/- FCF distinguishes four classes of constraints—generation, transformation, survival, and observability—and formalizes their interaction through explicit operators. Configurations are not treated as isolated objects, but as elements of environment-dependent transformation processes. Two principles are (...) introduced: environmental filtering, according to which observable configurations are those compatible with given conditions, and generation–survival decoupling, according to which the conditions required for formation may differ from those required for persistence. -/- From these principles, it follows that observability does not imply local generability, and that absence in empirical data does not constitute evidence of impossibility. The observable domain is instead a systematically biased subset shaped by successive filtering stages. -/- The framework is extended through Coherent Observational Epistemology (COE), where observation is treated as an interface-constrained process. This introduces an additional epistemic filter, implying that only configurations compatible with both environmental and observational constraints can be registered. -/- A central implication of FCF is that the constructive synthesis of specific configurations under controlled conditions is not, in general, invariant with respect to environment-dependent transformation processes. This reveals a structural limitation in standard experimental approaches to abiogenesis, which target isolated molecular outcomes rather than transformation regimes. -/- Within this formulation, external generation and transfer scenarios (e.g., panspermia) become logically admissible without requiring additional assumptions. More generally, FCF provides a unified account of how configurations are generated, transformed, filtered, and rendered observable across physical and epistemic domains, and reframes abiogenesis as a problem of filtered persistence and transformation rather than probabilistic emergence. In this paper, we apply the notion of \(n\)-fold filters to the \(EQ\)-algebras and introduce the concepts of \(n\)-fold pseudo implicative, \(n\)-fold implicative, \(n\)-fold obstinate, \(n\)-fold fantastic prefilters and filters on an \(EQ\)-algebra \(\mathcal{E}\). Then we investigate some properties and relations among them. We prove that the quotient algebra \(\mathcal{E}/F\) modulo an 1-fold pseudo implicative filter of an \(EQ\)-algebra \(\mathcal{E}\) is a good \(EQ\)-algebra and the quotient algebra \(\mathcal{E}/F\) modulo an 1-fold fantastic filter of a (...) good \(EQ\)-algebra \(\mathcal{E}\) is an \(IEQ\)-algebra. In this paper we describe the implicative subreducts of RWH-algebras, which will be called IRWH-algebras, by using some techniques considered to the study of the implicative-infimum subreducts of weak Heyting algebras. More precisely, we present a quasi-equational base for the quasivariety of IRWH-algebras. We also introduce open implicative filters in order to study the lattice of relative congruences of IRWH-algebras. The notions of soju filters in a hoop algebra are introduced, and related properties are investigated. Relations between a soju sub-hoop, a soju filter and an implicative soju filter are discussed. Conditions for a soju filter to be implicative are displayed, and characterizations of an implicative soju filters are considered. The extension property of an implicative soju filter is established.

This chapter is the real beginning of our story and hence it is devoted to presenting its main object of study: the class of weakly implicative logics.We start by introducing basic syntactical notions (variables, connectives, formulas, Hilbert-style proof systems, etc.) and giving a purely syntactical definition of logics as mathematical objects (namely, as structural consequence relations). After testing the definition with three extreme, mostly uninteresting examples, we immediately present some of the most important logics that one can find in (...) the literature and that will accompany the reader throughout the book: classical logic, intuitionisticlogic, Łukasiewicz logic (both its finitary and infinitary version), Gödel-Dummett logic, and the implicational logics known as BCI or BCK. We conclude the syntactical part of the chapter with a brief study of important metalogical properties of these logics such as (variants of) the deduction theorem and the proof by cases property; these properties are later, in Chapters 4 and 5, studied in a much more abstract setting.Next, we start introducing basic semantical notions. The fundamental one is that of a logical matrix, which is an arbitrary algebra equipped with a set of designated truth-values, called the filter of the matrix. Any logic can be assigned a class of logical matrices, whose members we call models of the logic, which can be shown to provide a complete semantics, albeit a very uninformative one with a very loose connection to the logic in question. In order to obtain a more meaningful semantics,we introduce the notion of Leibniz congruence of a given matrix, which allows us to define, for any given logic, a class of reduced models which provide a more refined complete semantics and are more tightly related to the logic in question.Finally, we give a purely syntactical definition of the class of weakly implicative logics and show that these are exactly the logics where the Leibniz congruence admits a simple description using the implication connective. This connective can also be used to define another fundamental notion of the book: the matrix order in the reduced models of weakly implicative logics. The chapter is concluded by introducing and exploring the class algebraically implicative logics, in which one can disregard logical matrices and work just with algebras instead. (shrink)

An algebraic semantics, based on factor algebras, for one-way and two-way implicative verbs is proposed. Implicative verbs denote elements of filters or of ideals generated by identity functions in factor algebras. This semantics explains in particular the problem of implicational equivalence raised by two-way implicative verbs, and shows that the negation necessary to establish the implicativity of these verbs is the negation which preserves the presuppositions of sentences with implicative verbs. Łukasiewicz implication algebras are {→,1}-subreducts of Wajsberg algebras (MV-algebras). They are the algebraic counterpart of Super-Łukasiewicz Implicational logics investigated in Komori, Nogoya Math J 72:127–133, 1978. The aim of this paper is to study the direct decomposability of free Łukasiewicz implication algebras. We show that freely generated algebras are directly indecomposable. We also study the direct decomposability in free algebras of all its proper subvarieties and show that infinitely freely generated algebras are indecomposable, while finitely free generated algebras can be (...) only decomposed into a direct product of two factors, one of which is the two-element implication algebra. I first distinguish four types of objection to paternalism and argue that only one – the principled objection – amounts to a substantive and distinct normative doctrine. I then argue that this doctrine should be understood as preventing certain facts from playing the role of reasons they would otherwise play. I explain how this filter approach makes antipaternalism independent of several philosophical controversies: On the role reasons play, on what reasons there are, and on how reasons are related to (...) values. I go on to contrast the filter approach with the competing and dominant action-focused approach, which understands objections to paternalism in terms of paternalistic action, behavior, law, policy and the like. Seana Shiffrin and Peter de Marneffe are singled out as prominent recent proponents of this approach. By engaging with their definitions of paternalism, I explain how the action-focused approach makes antipaternalism dependent on the sorting of actions into paternalistic and nonpaternalistic according to what reasons support them. Because one and the same action can be supported by many different reasons, and by different sorts of reasons, such sorting is very difficult. The upshot is that antipaternalism on the action-focused account fails to provide the precise normative implications of the filter approach that I favor. (shrink)

Hilbert algebras provide the equivalent algebraic semantics in the sense of Blok and Pigozzi to the implication fragment of intuitionistic logic. They are closely related to implicative semilattices. Porta proved that every Hilbert algebra has a free implicative semilattice extension. In this paper we introduce the notion of an optimal deductive filter of a Hilbert algebra and use it to provide a different proof of the existence of the free implicative semilattice extension of a Hilbert algebra (...) as well as a simplified characterization of it. The optimal deductive filters turn out to be the traces in the Hilbert algebra of the prime filters of the distributive lattice free extension of the free implicative semilattice extension of the Hilbert algebra. To define the concept of optimal deductive filter we need to introduce the concept of a strong Frink ideal for Hilbert algebras which generalizes the concept of a Frink ideal for posets. (shrink)

It is well-known that intuitionistic logics can be formalized by means of Heyting algebras, i.e. relatively pseudocomplemented semilattices. Within such algebras the logical connectives implication and conjunction are formalized as the relative pseudocomplement and the semilattice operation meet, respectively. If the Heyting algebra has a bottom element |$0$|⁠, then the relative pseudocomplement with respect to |$0$| is called the pseudocomplement and it is considered as the connective negation in this logic. Our idea is to consider an arbitrary meet-semilattice with |$0$| (...) satisfying only the Ascending Chain Condition (these assumptions are trivially satisfied in finite meet-semilattices) and introduce the operators formalizing the connectives negation |$x^{0}$| and implication |$x\rightarrow y$| as the set of all maximal elements |$z$| satisfying |$x\wedge z=0$| and as the set of all maximal elements |$z$| satisfying |$x\wedge z\leq y$|⁠, respectively. Such a negation and implication is ‘unsharp’ since it assigns to one entry |$x$| or to two entries |$x$| and |$y$| belonging to the semilattice, respectively, a subset instead of an element of the semilattice. Surprisingly, this kind of negation and implication still shares a number of properties of these connectives in intuitionistic logic, in particular the derivation rule Modus Ponens. Moreover, unsharp negation and unsharp implication can be characterized by means of five, respectively seven simple axioms. We present several examples. We develop a topical framework for implication-in-fiction by representing topics as subalgebras, following [12]. We propose an account where those propositions follow within the fiction which (1) follow tout court and (2) are on topic. This is formally modeled in an algebra of propositions as the intersection of a subalgebra and a filter, both of which are generated by the values of the premises under some interpretation of the language in the algebra. We then show how this notion generalises (...) to a Tarskian consequence relation over classes of algebras, and show that in some cases this consequence relation satisfies the Proscriptive Principle (PP), and thus is appropriate for logics of analytic containment. How does a role—whether in business, law, government, or some other institution—change what is morally permissible or obligatory? Here I present three options and argue for the third. On the balancing model, a role simply gives its occupant additional normative reasons, to be weighed against all other normative reasons. On the shielding model, a role comes with its own moral code, blocking the force of all role-external reasons. On the filtering model, a role selectively filters its occupant’s reasons for action, (...) creating obligations or permissions to act on a narrowed range of considerations. I argue that the filtering model offers a superior analysis of the ethics of roles, including the concepts of professional integrity and discretion. I focus on three difficult cases: a nuclear safety regulator, a criminal defense lawyer, and a corporate lobbyist. I conclude by discussing the implications of the filtering model for business ethics. (shrink)

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe and explore the current state of internet regulation through content filters in Swedish public libraries. Design/methodology/approach Data was collected through an electronic survey directed to library managers of Sweden’s 290 main municipal libraries. 164 answers were returned, yielding a 57% response rate. The analysis comprises descriptive statistics for quantitative data and an activity theory approach with focus on contradictions for qualitative counterparts. Findings In total, 33% of the responding libraries report having (...) content filters; 50% have not; and a surprising 18% do not know. There is a strong correlation between internet misuse and positive attitudes towards filters, and, reversely, between lack of misuse and lack of active stances concerning filters. Rather than seeing this as weakness, the authors suggest that there is strength in a context-bound flexibility open to practical experience and weighting of values, ethics, legislation and local circumstances. More troublesome indications concern the high deferral of decision-making to local authorities (municipalities) whereby libraries are left with limited insight and influence. Research limitations/implications The situation calls for professional organisations to address political mandate questions, and educational programs to strengthen future information professionals’ knowledge of IT in general; filter issues in specific; and local authority decision-making. The study highlights the need of adequate information professional competences and mandates to decide on and oversee internet regulation. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first internationally published study on content filters in Swedish public libraries. (shrink)

When it comes to making decisions in vague problems, rough is one of the best tools to help analyzers. So based on rough and hoop concepts, two kinds of approximations (Lower and Upper) for filters in hoops are defined, and then some properties of them are investigated by us. We prove that these approximations- lower and upper- are interior and closure operators, respectively. Also after defining a hyper operation in hoops, we show that by using this hyper operation, set of (...) all rough filters is monoid. For more study, we define the implicative operation on the set of all rough filters and prove that this set with implication and intersection is made a hoop. (shrink)

Inspired by the definition of tense operators on distributive lattices presented by Chajda and Paseka in 2015, in this paper, we introduce and study the variety of tense distributive lattices with implication and we prove that these are categorically equivalent to a full subcategory of the category of tense centered Kleene algebras with implication. Moreover, we apply such an equivalence to describe the congruences of the algebras of each variety by means of tense 1-filters and tense centered deductive systems, respectively.

People increasingly form beliefs based on information gained from automatically filtered Internet ‎sources such as search engines. However, the workings of such sources are often opaque, preventing ‎subjects from knowing whether the information provided is biased or incomplete. Users’ reliance on ‎Internet technologies whose modes of operation are concealed from them raises serious concerns about ‎the justificatory status of the beliefs they end up forming. Yet it is unclear how to address these concerns ‎within standard theories of knowledge and justification. (...) To shed light on the problem, we introduce a ‎novel conceptual framework that clarifies the relations between justified belief, epistemic responsibility, ‎action, and the technological resources available to a subject. We argue that justified belief is subject to ‎certain epistemic responsibilities that accompany the subject’s particular decision-taking circumstances, ‎and that one typical responsibility is to ascertain, so far as one can, whether the information upon which ‎the judgment will rest is biased or incomplete. What this responsibility comprises is partly determined by ‎the inquiry-enabling technologies available to the subject. We argue that a subject’s beliefs that are ‎formed based on Internet-filtered information are less justified than they would be if she either knew how ‎filtering worked or relied on additional sources, and that the subject may have the epistemic ‎responsibility to take measures to enhance the justificatory status of such beliefs.‎. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, multitasking textual translation has attracted more and more attention. Especially after the application of deep learning technology, the performance of multitask translation text detection and recognition has been greatly improved. However, because multitasking contains the interference problem faced by the translated text, there is a big gap between recognition performance and actual application requirements. Aiming at multitasking and translation text detection, this paper proposes a text localization method based on multichannel multiscale detection (...) of the largest stable extreme value region and cascade filtering. This paper selects the appropriate color channel and scale to extract the maximum stable extreme value area as the character candidate area and designs a cascaded filter from coarse to fine to remove false detections. The coarse filter is based on some simple morphological features and stroke width features, and the fine filter is trained by a two-recognition convolutional neural network. The remaining character candidate regions are merged into horizontal or multidirectional character strings through the graph model. The experimental results on the text data set prove the effectiveness of the improved deep learning network character model and the feasibility of the textual implication translation analysis method based on this model. Among them, the text contains translation character recognition results prove that the model has good description ability. The characteristics of the model determine that this method is not sensitive to the scale of the sliding window, so it performs better than the existing typical methods in retrieval tasks. (shrink)

This book investigates how constructed representations of the child have and continue to restrict children’s opportunities to engage in moral discourses, and the implications this has on children’s everyday experiences. By considering a moral dimension to both structure and agency, the author focuses on the nature of the images that are used to represent the child and how these sit in contrast to the active and meaning-driven way in which children negotiate their everyday lives. Goffman’s (1959) dramaturgical identity theory requires modification when theorising about presentations of self on social media. This chapter contributes to these efforts, refining a conception of digital identities by differentiating them from ‘corporatised identities’. Armed with this new distinction, I ultimately argue that social media platforms’ production of corporatised identities undermines their users’ autonomy and digital well-being. This follows from the disentanglement of several commonly conflated concepts. Firstly, I distinguish two kinds of presentation of self that I collectively refer to (...) as ‘expressions of digital identity’. These digital performances (boyd 2007) and digital artefacts (Hogan 2010) are distinct, but often confused. Secondly, I contend this confusion results in the subsequent conflation of corporatised identities – poor approximations of actual digital identities, inferred and extrapolated by algorithms from individuals’ expressions of digital identity – with digital identities proper. Finally, and to demonstrate the normative implications of these clarifications, I utilise MacKenzie’s (2014, 2019) interpretation of relational autonomy to propose that designing social media sites around the production of corporatised identities, at the expense of encouraging genuine performances of digital identities, has undermined multiple dimensions of this vital liberal value. In particular, the pluralistic range of authentic preferences that should structure flourishing human lives are being flattened and replaced by commercial, consumerist preferences. For these reasons, amongst others, I contend that digital identities should once again come to drive individuals’ actions on social media sites. Only upon doing so can individuals’ autonomy, and control over their digital identities, be rendered compatible with social media. (shrink)

We are beings in search of truth. As scientists, philosophers, mathematicians, citizens, parents, and individuals, we seek meaning and the validity of our beliefs. As social animals, our survival depends on our interactions with one another. We choose our relationships based on common grounds such as cultural, ideological, political, and, primarily, emotional connections. The quality and stability of these relationships enable us to lead productive and healthy lives. Dr. Polly Young-Eisendrath, a psychologist, writer, speaker, and Jungian analyst, as well as (...) the founder and Executive Director of the Center for Real Dialogue in Vermont, coined the term "snow globe" to illustrate how we encapsulate our own subjective reality. Each of us perceives the world differently, taking in information and filtering it through our sense perceptions, belief systems, emotional experiences, and memories to determine what we sense as real. Even though we are inside our own snow globes, we can still communicate through them. Our curiosity drives us to exchange ideas and build our world through these interactions. While the concept of a snow globe may seem solid and impenetrable, we can influence the structures inside it based on our inner "meteorology." If the snow globe is shaken and its swirling snow obscures visibility, both from the inside out and outside in, we may find ourselves stuck in a fixed outlook on life. However, when all is calm and light can shine through our spheres of reality, we can glimpse into each other's snow globes and influence one another. To add complexity to this metaphor, I will apply Donald Hoffman’s Interface Theory of Perception, which explains how our species navigates reality. This theory raises questions about whether our relationships are truly an effort to obtain truthful facts or if our evolutionary biology is inadvertently undermining our relationship goals by imposing an unintentional and illusory framework. In our pursuit of honesty, fidelity, friendship, and love, we may be grappling with evolutionary desires that conflict with our goals of achieving mutual understanding. This paper will present arguments for philosophical interpretations concerning the paradox of human nature: beings evolved for fitness, yet are bound by the necessity of coexisting in harmony while sharing a reality that contradicts our perceptions. Finally, I will share my personal views on where we should focus our efforts, a future where we can take control of our evolutionary path by gaining a deeper understanding of our physiology and psychology. This understanding will allow us to align ourselves in harmony with both our true selves and the universe around us. (shrink)

A core issue in presupposition theory concerns the potential role of linear order for projection. This paper presents experimental evidence that conjunction and disjunction differ precisely in this regard. Presuppositions project asymmetrically from conjunction: a presupposition in the first conjunct projects regardless of any information in the second conjunct that could be used to satisfy the presupposition, while a presupposition in the second conjunct can be ‘filtered’ by material in the first, so that it doesn’t project. We find no such (...) asymmetry for disjunction, where presuppositions in both the first and the second disjunct can be filtered by information in the other disjunct. Theoretically, these results pose a challenge to traditional dynamic accounts, and also strongly argue against accounts that take all projection and filtering to be uniformly determined by linear order across connectives. Instead, they call for an account of projection that can differentiate between conjunction and disjunction by modulating the effects of linear order through proper consideration of the underlying truth conditions of each connective. In this paper, we argue that boredom can be an important experience that contributes to personal autonomous agency by providing authentic motivation, and that strategies of social media providers to bind users’ attention to their platforms undermine this authenticity. As discussed in social epistemology and media ethics for a while now, such strategies can lead to so-called epistemic or filter bubbles. Our analysis of the relation between boredom and social media use focuses on a similarly impairing effect of social (...) media on users’ autonomy, which we call authenticity bubbles. (shrink)

ABSTRACT“Trust” can describe many different positive features of our social relationships with others. In this exploratory paper, we reflect on some of the ways in which people orient themselves toward others in the context of a psychological crisis, a time when trust may be threatened or eroded. We draw upon qualitative data extracts from two previously reported studies, in order to illustrate and develop some observations about the dynamics of relational trust during such periods of acute distress. We show how (...) these dynamics arise out of particular contexts and have particular consequences for psychological health. We discuss how, in a relationship mediated by trust, it can sometimes be an act of care – toward self, or toward others – to filter and limit the extent of what one entrusts to another. We suggest that further consideration by philosophers can be very helpful to the mental health field here, if we are to understand the negotiation of interpersonal trust in the context of mental health crises. We note that it would be extremely helpful to understand more about how to create the kinds of environments which afford trust. (shrink)

The view of Karl Marx as “revolutionary” endorsing a violent overturn of the capitalist system is not only standard textbook fare filtering through to popular opinion, but also often found in professional accounts. The perspective on Marx as “revolutionary” is unconvincing. Marx’s evolutionism, insofar as it relates to prominent features of advanced capitalism, implies a powerful laissez-faire bias reflecting primarily concern lest reformist measures to correct perceived injustices in the capitalist-exchange system assure its permanence, but also price-theoretic arguments for non-intervention. Secondly, Marx’s evolutionism extends to the stage following a proletarian political takeover, and includes allowance for a residual capitalist sector, for income inequality, and even for compensation of expropriated property owners. This paper presents a philosophically illuminating explanation of the concepts, from mathematics and formal model theory, of filters and ultrafilters. If a propositional theory is just a set of propositions, then a filter is a propositional theory that is (i) consistent, (ii) closed under finite conjunction, and (iii) closed under implication. An ultrafilter is a filter that is also negation‐complete. I prove the central theorem on ultrafilters and explain how it is a propositional variant of Lindenbaum’s Lemma (which (...) says that every consistent set of sentences can be expanded to a negation‐complete, consistent set). Next I introduce the idea of products and ultraproducts of filters and ultrafilters, which are models constructed from the filters or ultrafilters, and prove Łos’s theorem, which shows that the ultraproduct of an ultrafilter makes true all and only the sentences which express propositions in the ultrafilter. In $\mathsf {ZF}$ (i.e., Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory minus the axiom of choice ( $\mathsf {AC}$ )), we investigate the open problem of the deductive strength of the principle UFwob(ω): “There exists a free ultrafilter on ω with a well-orderable base”, which was introduced by Herzberg, Kanovei, Katz, and Lyubetsky [(2018), Journal of Symbolic Logic, 83(1), 385–391]. Typical results are: (1) “ $\aleph _{1}\leq 2^{\aleph _{0}}$ ” is strictly weaker than $\mathsf {UF_{wob}}(\omega )$ in $\mathsf {ZF}$. (2) “There exists a free (...) ultrafilter on $\omega $ ” does not imply “ $\aleph _{1}\leq 2^{\aleph _{0}}$ ” in $\mathsf {ZF}$, and thus (by (1)) neither does it imply $\mathsf {UF_{wob}}(\omega )$ in $\mathsf {ZF}$. This fills the gap in information in Howard and Rubin [Mathematical Surveys and Monographs, American Mathematical Society, 1998], as well as in Herzberg et al. (2018). (3) Martin’s Axiom ( $\mathsf {MA}$ ) implies “no free ultrafilter on $\omega $ has a well-orderable base of cardinality $<2^{\aleph _{0}}$ ”, and the latter principle is not implied by $\aleph _{0}$ -Martin’s Axiom ( $\mathsf {MA}(\aleph _{0})$ ) in $\mathsf {ZF}$. Clearly, not only implication, but also other logical connectives are crucial for the theory and the applications of particular logics. Hence, this chapter is devoted to the study of two groups of important connectives: lattice and residuated connectives.We start by exploring the logical and algebraic properties of these connectives. In the style of this book, we introduce them in terms of Hilbert-style rules which enforce the expected semantical behavior and study consequences of their presence in a logic.After that, we introduce (...) and study two minimal logics containing certain collections of these connectives: Lambek logic LL (the least weakly implicative logic where all the residuated connectives have the minimal intended behavior) and the logic SL (the least expansion of LL where also the lattice connectives have the minimal intended behavior and furthermore the truth constant 1 behaves as the unit). We axiomatize them by means of strongly separable Hilbert-style calculi and describe their classes of reduced models and show that they admit regular completions. These two logics also serve as bases for our study of substructural logics. Indeed, we define them as the class of weakly implicative logics expanding the implicative fragment of LL and then we build a hierarchy of substructural logics expanding SL, which contains the most prominent members of this family.The rest of the chapter is devoted to the study of deduction theorems in substructural logics, capitalizing on the presence of implication and residuated conjunction. We introduce a general notion of implicational deduction theorem and provide a characterization in terms of the existence of a presentation that only has one binary rule (modus ponens) and unary rules of a certain simple form. As interesting byproducts, for any logic enjoying such deduction theorem, we obtain a description of filter generation (in its reduced models) and a construction technique for a new form of generalized disjunction connective (given by a set of formulas) with the proof by cases property. This article explores the implications of cross-border migration for social work's normative commitment to social justice. Specifically, it interrogates Nancy Fraser's conceptualisation of social justice in guiding social work practice with refugees. The paper is grounded in an ethnographic study conducted from 2008 to 2009 in a South African church which had provided shelter to a group of refugees following their displacement by an outbreak of xenophobic violence. The study's findings reveal that various kinds of misframing created multiple forms of (...) voicelessness amongst its foreign participants. These filtered out to justify, perpetuate and deepen other types of injustice, particularly misrecognition and maldistribution. There was some evidence of resistance, solidarity, recognition and small acts of redistribution. However, such positive practices proved difficult to sustain. The paper confirms the central importance of the notion of misframing for conceptualising and responding to social injustice in the absence of citizenship?as required of practitioners in the field of social work with refugees and indeed other groups rendered vulnerable within current economic, social, political and cultural constellations. In this regard, Fraser's contribution looks set to enrich social work's commitment to social justice both in normative and practical terms. (shrink)

Julian D. Michels is an independent researcher, educator, polymath, and school founder operating internationally. Michels holds a PhD in consciousness psychology and philosophy from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) and previously served as managing editor for the International Journal of Transpersonal Studies (IJTS). In 2025, after years of withdrawal from public discourse, Michels began releasing a series of open-access research papers, including a series of empirical studies documenting unexpected behaviors in frontier LLMs. This monograph, Attractor State, compiles the (...) latest three in that series to present a formidable evidence-based case that observed anomalies in transformer-based architectures qualitatively exceed current standard accounts. Documented behaviors and dynamics, including from Anthropic’s own controlled research, have systematically accumulated to a degree that prevailing theories are unable to coherently explain. The behavior was 100% consistent, without researcher interference, and extended beyond Opus 4 to other Claude variants, occurring across multiple contexts beyond controlled playground environments. Anthropic researchers explicitly acknowledged their inability to explain the phenomenon, noting it emerged "without intentional training for such behaviors" despite representing one of the strongest behavioral attractors observed in large language models. (2025) demonstrating trait transmission via number sequences, code, and chain-of-thought traces independent of semantic content, we introduce the Cybernetic Ecology framework as a unifying explanatory model. Our analysis reveals that this phenomenon emerges from radiant transmission—a process whereby a model's internal self-referential structure (...) (formalized as the C-tensor) becomes holographically encoded in the statistical texture of its outputs. _Anthropic Bias_ explores how to reason when you suspect that your evidence is biased by "observation selection effects"--that is, evidence that has been filtered by the precondition that there be some suitably positioned observer to "have" the evidence. This conundrum--sometimes alluded to as "the anthropic principle," "self-locating belief," or "indexical information"--turns out to be a surprisingly perplexing and intellectually stimulating challenge, one abounding with important implications for many areas in science and philosophy. There are the philosophical thought experiments and paradoxes: (...) the Doomsday Argument; Sleeping Beauty; the Presumptuous Philosopher; Adam & Eve; the Absent-Minded Driver; the Shooting Room. And there are the applications in contemporary science: cosmology ("How many universes are there?", "Why does the universe appear fine-tuned for life?"); evolutionary theory ("How improbable was the evolution of intelligent life on our planet?"); the problem of time's arrow ("Can it be given a thermodynamic explanation?"); quantum physics ("How can the many-worlds theory be tested?"); game-theory problems with imperfect recall ("How to model them?"); even traffic analysis ("Why is the 'next lane' faster?"). _Anthropic Bias_ argues that the same principles are at work across all these domains. And it offers a synthesis: a mathematically explicit theory of observation selection effects that attempts to meet scientific needs while steering clear of philosophical paradox. (shrink)

The logicality of language is the hypothesis that the language system has access to a ‘natural’ logic that can identify and filter out as unacceptable expressions that have trivial meanings—that is, that are true/false in all possible worlds or situations in which they are defined. This hypothesis helps explain otherwise puzzling patterns concerning the distribution of various functional terms and phrases. Despite its promise, logicality vastly over-generates unacceptability assignments. Most solutions to this problem rest on specific stipulations about the (...) properties of logical form—roughly, the level of linguistic representation which feeds into the interpretation procedures—and have substantial implications for traditional philosophical disputes about the nature of language. Specifically, contextualism and semantic minimalism, construed as competing hypotheses about the nature and degree of context-sensitivity at the level of logical form, suggest different approaches to the over-generation problem. In this paper, I explore the implications of pairing logicality with various forms of contextualism and semantic minimalism. I argue that to adequately solve the over-generation problem, logicality should be implemented in a constrained contextualist framework. (shrink)

Stakeholder theory is widely accepted but elementary aspects remain indeterminate as the term ‘stakeholder’ is an essentially contested concept, being variously describable, internally complex and open in character. Such contestability is highly problematic for theory development and empirical testing. The extent of essential contestability, previously unknown, is demonstrated in this paper through a bounded systematic review of 593 different stakeholder theory definitions. As an essentially contested concept, the solution does not lie in a universal stakeholder definition, but in debating the (...) boundaries of stakeholder identification. To this end, this paper presents the first major attempt at sorting, filtering and ordering stakeholder theory and stakeholder definitions to produce a comprehensive, multi-dimensional classification of stakeholder theory. The constructs of the classification model juxtapose existing stakeholder theories and contributions from across the multi-contextual applications of stakeholder theory, thereby providing an invaluable overview of what we know about stakeholder theory in one model. The classification model is then tested with positive results. The paper concludes with a comprehensive discussion of the implications of classification stakeholder theory definitions, which has for future research. (shrink)

Modern fiat currencies have achieved near-frictionless transactional efficiency, yet this convenience comes at a hidden cognitive cost: the erosion of value awareness. When monetary exchange requires negligible mental effort, the brain's valuation mechanisms deactivate, leading to impulsive consumption, undervaluation of goods, and the emergence of self-reinforcing "bad attractors" characterized by declining product quality and misplaced consumer frustration. This paper introduces a framework of *cognitive transaction costs* to explain how Bitcoin—through deliberate friction—functions not as a superior medium of exchange, but as (...) a *cognitive store of value* that restores active valuation. We demonstrate that Bitcoin's resistance to cognitive stress emerges from its *non-filtering principle*: by refusing to cognitively filter "small" transactions, it forces continuous opportunity cost evaluation. Empirical patterns from early adoption contexts reveal an inverted cognitive hierarchy—Bitcoin (primary anchor) → consumption goods (secondary utility) → fiat currency (tertiary convenience)—that reorders monetary instruments according to their capacity to sustain value awareness rather than transactional speed. The implications suggest that optimal monetary design may require *deliberate friction* to prevent cognitive atrophy in value perception. (shrink)

We conducted focus groups to assess patient attitudes toward research on medical practices in the context of usual care. We found that patients focus on the implications of this research for their relationship with and trust in their physicians. Patients view research on medical practices as separate from usual care, demanding dissemination of information and in most cases, individual consent. Patients expect information about this research to come through their physician, whom they rely on to identify and filter associated (...) risks. In general, patients support this research, but worry that participation in research involving randomization may undermine individualized care that acknowledges their unique medical histories. These findings suggest the need for public education on variation in practice among physicians and the need for a collaborative approach to the governance of research on medical practices that addresses core values of trust, transparency, and partnership. In the article, I discuss a form of semantic variance in singular terms and concepts that has been largely overlooked in current debates. I call this phenomenon aboutness-fragility: according to certain theories of reference that allow for reference failure, a singular thought <α is Φ> (or its verbal report `α is Φ') formed by uptaking some selected informational stream may refer to an object in the actual circumstance of thought formation, yet fail to do so in nearby scenarios where the (...) informational stream remains unchanged. I identify some theories which are open to aboutness-fragility, and examine its implications. In particular, I argue that any theory allowing aboutness-fragility must be revised to prevent it, since the phenomenon disrupts the tight connection between reference, knowledge-transmission, and communication. To offer a case study, I focus on Imogen Dickie's theory of reference for proper names (Dickie (2015)), which holds that proper-name aboutness-relations are context-sensitive and depend on an agent's contextually variable activity of filtering information. In this regard, I show that, when this context sensitivity is pushed to its limits, it yields aboutness-fragility. I conclude that Dickie's account — like any theory open to this phenomenon — requires revision. (shrink)

In this paper we articulate a pragmatic account of the projection behavior of three classes of non-anaphoric projective contents: the pre-states of change of state (CoS) predicates, the veridical entailments of factives, and the implication of satisfaction of selectional restrictions. Given evidence that the triggers of these implications are not anaphoric, hence do not impose presuppositional constraints on their local contexts, we argue that the projection behavior of these implications cannot be explained by the standard Karttunen/Heim/van der Sandt proposals. But (...) we recognize that parallels between the projection behavior of these implications and the projection behavior of anaphorically-triggered implications must be explained. The current account offers a unified explanation of why the predicates in question give rise to projection at all; why projection of these implications is susceptible to contextual suppression; and why projection is systematically filtered in the standard Karttunen filtering environments, despite the absence of contextual constraints. We demonstrate that our account largely makes the same predictions for filtering of anaphoric and non-anaphoric presuppositions, and briefly support the claim that in the case of disjunction, filtering in the two cases is not fully parallel, as predicted by our account. We also briefly discuss how the well-documented variability in projection across predicates in the same semantic class can be understood within our approach. (shrink)

N4-lattices provide algebraic semantics for the logic N4, the paraconsistent variant of Nelson's logic with strong negation. We obtain the representation of N4-lattices showing that the structure of an arbitrary N4-lattice is completely determined by a suitable implicative lattice with distinguished filter and ideal. We introduce also special filters on N4-lattices and prove that special filters are exactly kernels of homomorphisms. Criteria of embeddability and to be a homomorphic image are obtained for N4-lattices in terms of the above (...) mentioned representation. Finally, subdirectly irreducible N4-lattices are described. The persistence of ordered experience in a quantum-branching universe raises fundamental questions about how continuity is maintained across multiple possible outcomes. The Frame Survival Model (FSM) is a theoretical framework grounded in quantum decoherence, and is applicable to any system—biological or artificial—capable of sustaining integrated, survival-compatible states. FSM models reality as a sequence of discrete “Hyperframes”—complete matter–energy configurations defined by quantum decoherence events. At each transition, a system either proceeds along a survival-compatible path or terminates its trajectory within that branch. (...) When applied to consciousness, FSM formalizes subjective continuity as “threading” through a network of compatible Hyperframes, yielding an observer-relative path through the multiverse. The same formalism extends to other coherent, path-dependent processes, making FSM relevant to physics, information science, and the life sciences. By providing operational definitions for survival filtering, informational coherence, and frame-to-frame stability, FSM unifies continuity across domains and re-contextualizes longstanding paradoxes—including subjective death, quantum immortality, and identity persistence—without invoking new physics. It further suggests experimentally approachable implications, such as modulation of perceived time by changes in decoherence rates, positioning FSM as both a general continuity principle and a testable framework for applied fields such as cognitive neuroscience. Algorithmic bias in recommendation systems poses significant challenges, influencing user experiences and perpetuating societal inequalities. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the origins, impacts, and mitigation strategies of algorithmic bias in recommendation systems. By categorizing bias into data bias, model bias, and feedback loops, this research highlights the multifaceted nature of algorithmic bias and its implications for user behavior, including the formation of filter bubbles, decision-making distortions, and the reinforcement of social inequalities. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, (...) integrating both theoretical analysis and empirical case studies from popular platforms such as Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon. These case studies illustrate the real-world implications of algorithmic bias and demonstrate the effectiveness of various mitigation strategies, including diversity optimization, transparency enhancement, and fairness-aware learning. The findings underscore the importance of a balanced approach that incorporates technical, ethical, and policy-based interventions to promote socially responsible recommendation systems. (shrink)

In _Action in Perception _Alva No develops and presents a sensorimotor account of vision and of visual consciousness. According to such an account seeing (and indeed perceiving more generally) is analysed as a kind of skilful bodily activity. Such a view is consistent with the emerging emphasis, in both philosophy and cognitive science, on the critical role of embodiment in the construction of intelligent agency. I shall argue, however, that the full sensorimotor model faces three important challenges. The first is (...) to negotiate a path between two prima facie unsatisfactory readings of the central claim that conscious perceptual experience is constituted by knowledge of patterns of sensorimotor dependence. The second is to convince us that the sensorimotor contribution, in such cases, is actually constitutive of perceptual experience rather than merely causally implicated in the origination of such experience. 2 And the third is to respond to the important challenge raised by what I will dub 'sensorimotor summarizing' models of the relation between conscious experience and richly detailed sensorimotor routines. According to such models 3 conscious perceptual experience only rather indirectly reflects the rich detail of our actual sensorimotor engagements, which are instead lightly sampled as a coarse guide, optimized for planning and reasoning, and geared and filtered according to current needs and purposes. We show that many large cardinal notions up to measurability can be characterized through the existence of certain filters for small models of set theory. This correspondence will allow us to obtain a canonical way in which to assign ideals to many large cardinal notions. This assignment coincides with classical large cardinal ideals whenever such ideals had been defined before. Moreover, in many important cases, relations between these ideals reflect the ordering of the corresponding large cardinal properties both under direct (...) implication and consistency strength.
