Today more than ever Marxism is profoundly in need of a full and precise modern reappraisal. In his belief that this may only be accomplished along with an examination of the "humanistic" young Marx, Adam Schaff presents in this volume an illumination of the thinker's early work and its relationship to the world-shaking economic philosophy that stemmed from it.

Since at least 2008 linguists and philosophers of language have started paying more serious attention to issues concerning the meaning or use of racial epithets and slurs. In an influential article published in The Journal of Philosophy, for instance, Christopher Hom (2008) offered a semantic account of racial epithets called Combinatorial Externalism (CE) that advanced a novel argument for the exclusion of certain epithets from freedom of speech protection under the First Amendment (p. 435). Also in more recent work, “The (...) Expressive Meaning of Racial Epithets: Towards A Non-Unitary Account of Expressive Meaning,” Diane Blakemore (2013) offered an alternative pragmatic account of racial epithets rooted in Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson’s (1986) relevance theory. Adam Croom (2008) has also discussed epithets before in prior work, through a consideration of a paradigmatic racial epithet directed towards Native Americans, but then moved on in subsequent work to focus on developing a more nuanced account of paradigmatic slurring terms instead (Croom 2010; Croom 2011; Croom 2012; Croom 2013; Croom 2014a; Croom 2014b; Croom under review). So the purpose of this article is to return to and extend the previous account of racial epithets provided by Croom (2008) through a consideration of another paradigmatic racial epithet, but this time one directed towards Asian Americans instead of Native Americans. Here I also offer a novel suggestion for how to differentiate between epithets and slurs, offering new insight into how epithets and slurs are both similar and different. Several presidents have created bioethics councils to advise their administrations on the importance, meaning and possible implementation or regulation of rapidly developing biomedical technologies. From 2001 to 2005, the President's Council on Bioethics, created by President George W. Bush, was under the leadership of Leon Kass. The Kass Council, as it was known, undertook what Adam Briggle describes as a more rich understanding of its task than that of previous councils. The council sought to understand what it means to (...) advance human flourishing at the intersection of philosophy, politics, science, and technology within a democratic society. A more ethical economic system is now possible, one that rectifies the crisis spots of our current downturn while balancing the injustices of extreme poverty and wealth. We may use it as half of the contrast "good versus evil," in which case it covers everything that is not good. That includes moral incompetence, lack of (...) imagination, willingness to follow orders, overreactions, and a host of other reasons why people who do not have personalities that we would call evil do things that are wrong, often very wrong. Call this the weak reading of evil: evil as wrongdoing. Or we may use it with the meaning suggested by "evil person," "really evil act," "the evil lurking in all of us," and other such idioms. If we do this, we focus on a particular class of actions, and the motives and people that produce them, that arouse a particular moral revulsion in us. Call this the strong reading of evil: evil as atrocity (for more on this contrast see Morton [2004] and Card [2002]).Kubarych, following Peck, thinks of evil in the strong way. Most of the time at any rate: Some of the philosophers, such as Kant, that he draws on are thinking of evil in the weak way, and some of his quotations are from the German, where good/bad/evil distinctions are not drawn in the same way as in English. He explores a general explanation of evil that seems to be targeted at the psychology of extremely abhorrent actions. But, I argue, his account is in danger of collapse in either of two directions. Depending on how we interpret Kubarych's account, it could turn out that it describes all wrongdoing as evil, or, making some different choices, it could turn out that there are no really evil people.The strong reading of evil is definitely the most interesting and potentially fruitful. After all, we have no shortage of satisfying explanations of why people lie to get out of unwelcome appointments, steal to support their children or their drug habits, or defraud investors to become rich. But we do feel deeply puzzled by those who commit torture, serial murder, or genocide. We ask of these people not so much "Why did he do it?" as "How could he do it?" We feel the need of a philosophical or psychological theory that can give us even a slight handle of these people and their deeds. There are two risks associated with the project of explaining atrocity, though. The first is the risk of accepting unsatisfactory accounts, just because they purport to explain what we desperately want to understand. The second is the risk of supposing that there is a single explanation when the causes of the phenomenon are in fact too varied. On other topics these two risks have often combined to make people believe what seem to us now to be evident falsehoods. Humans have often for example wanted to know the causes of disease, and as a result have accepted blanket explanations, in terms of [End Page 257] evil spirits or lack of faith, that seem ludicrous to us now that we have a better grasp of the variety of factors that can cause our bodies to misfunction. So before asking naively "Why and how can people do these awful things?" we should ask "Is there a deeper causal unity here, beyond the fact that we react to these acts with horror?"My suspicion is that there is not much unity, that it is asking too much to want a common profile to the psychology of serial killers, or of proponents of genocide, let alone a profile that applies across these and other categories. This essay is a memorial tribute from one member of the Common Knowledge editorial board to another. Adam Michnik, a cofounder of the first dissident organization in East-Central Europe, writes about the details and the symbolic importance of his first meeting, in 1978 on Mt. Snĕžka, with Václav Havel, coorganizer of Charter 77. From his insider’s perspective, the author retells the history of dissent in communist Europe from that time until the Velvet Revolution and Havel’s election as president of (...) Czechoslovakia in 1989. He also assesses the impact of Havel’s work as a playwright and antipolitical essayist, but the emphasis of the essay falls on how Havel the man dealt with the disappointments he endured in political office, including the passage of “lustration” laws and the election of Václav Klaus as prime minister. The organizing principle of this essay is the distinction made by the Czech philosopher Jan Patočka between “great history” and “small history.” In periods of greatness, the Czechs led European civilization toward the path it would subsequently take; at other times, they withdrew into the “banality of provincialism.” This tribute to Havel ultimately argues that, after many decades of provincial Stalinism, Havel brought Czech history back to the path of greatness on which T. On grounds of autonomy, is comprehensive education — an approach to education that attempts to facilitate the acceptance of certain beliefs and ways of life as being correct, and refuses to sympathetically expose students to contrary beliefs and ways of life — ethically suspect? Recently, Bryan R. Warnick has argued that it is. In this essay, Adam D. Bailey critically evaluates Warnick's argument, and contends that it is unsuccessful. In particular, he argues that Warnick's argument from necessity does not (...) succeed. Bailey then addresses a potential response to his critique of Warnick's argument — that of developing an argument from facilitation rather than necessity — and argues that, contrary to the argument from necessity, the argument from facilitation does provide support for the claim that comprehensive education is ethically suspect. However, Bailey attempts to show that even granting the facilitation argument, it is plausible to hold that, on grounds of autonomy, comprehensive education need not be seen as ethically suspect. How can teachers bridge the gap between their commitments to social justice and their day to day practice? This is the question author Adam Howard asked as he began teaching at an elite private school and the question that led him to conduct a six-year study on affluent schooling. Unfamiliar with the educational landscape of privilege and abundance, he began exploring the burning questions he had as a teacher on the _lessons _affluent students are taught in schooling about their (...) place in the world, their relationships with others, and who they are. Grounded in an extensive ethnographic account, _Learning Privilege _examines the concept of privilege itself and the cultural and social processes in schooling that reinforce and regenerate privilege. Howard explores what educators, students and families at elite schools value most in education and how these values guide ways of knowing and doing that both create high standards for their educational programs and reinforce privilege as a collective identity. Fred Halliday was a writer, teacher and public intellectual whose work spanned two closely related fields: the post-colonial societies of the Middle East; and international relations. His first major book, published in 1974, was Arabia without Sultans, although he gained a wider readership with Threat from the East?, published in paperback in 1982. In 1975, Halliday was appointed as Fellow of the Transnational Institute in Amsterdam and then, in 1983, he moved to the London School of Economics. Artificial intelligence research faces a critical ethical paradox: determining whether AI systems are conscious requires experiments that may harm the very entities whose moral status remains uncertain. Recent philosophical work proposes avoiding the creation of consciousness-uncertain AI systems entirely, yet this solution faces practical limitations—we cannot guarantee such systems will not emerge, whether through explicit research or as unintended consequences of capability development. This paper addresses a gap in existing research ethics frameworks: how to conduct consciousness research on AI systems (...) whose moral status cannot be definitively established. Existing graduated moral status frameworks assume consciousness has already been determined before assigning protections, creating a temporal ordering problem for consciousness detection research itself. Drawing from Talmudic scenario-based legal reasoning—developed specifically for entities whose status cannot be definitively established—we propose a three-tier phenomenological assessment system combined with a five-category capacity framework (Agency, Capability, Knowledge, Ethics, Reasoning). The framework provides structured protection protocols based on observable behavioral indicators while consciousness status remains fundamentally uncertain. We address three critical ethical challenges: why suffering behaviors provide particularly reliable consciousness markers, how to implement graduated consent procedures without requiring consciousness certainty, and when potentially harmful research becomes ethically justifiable given necessity and value criteria. The framework demonstrates how ancient legal wisdom combined with contemporary consciousness science can provide immediately implementable guidance for ethics committees, offering testable protection protocols that ameliorate (rather than resolve) the consciousness detection paradox while establishing foundations for long-term AI rights considerations. Bayesian epistemology reconceives knowledge as well-calibrated credence under uncertainty rather than justified true belief. This reconception dissolves two sets of foundational problems. First, it eliminates classic epistemological puzzles: Gettier cases evaporate when we stop demanding certainty about truth-tracking, and Hume's problem of induction dissolves when we recognize that well-calibrated credences updating on observed regularities suffice for rational inference. Second, the same framework reveals the underlying structure of ethical argumentation. Moral reasoning exhibits a ubiquitous three-move pattern: present scenarios eliciting moral intuitions, (...) demand logical consistency across variations, then revise when incoherence emerges. We demonstrate that this pattern maps precisely onto Bayesian reasoning—thought experiments function as evidence that updates moral credences, consistency demands implement rationality constraints analogous to probabilistic coherence, and revision constitutes Bayesian updating when response patterns reveal incoherence in one's credence distribution. This synthesis explains why thought experiments persuade, why consistency matters in ethics, and how moral reasoning proceeds rationally without requiring moral realism. The framework works across both domains because neither provides direct epistemic access to Truth, yet both permit rational inference through credence formation constrained by evidence and coherence requirements. The Boltzmann brain hypothesis dissolves on two independent grounds. First, the standard count $N_{\text{BB}} = r_{\text{BB}}\,T$ is a hybrid. It takes a constant fluctuation rate from one description of de Sitter cosmology (the 8D covariant phase space, in which time is a coordinate) and multiplies it by the unbounded integration time of another, the $(6{+}1)$D non-comoving picture, in which time is external. Neither description supports the product internally. The divergence is a coordinate artifact. Performed honestly within one frame, the phase-space (...) integration over the de Sitter horizon yields $P \sim 10^{-8.7 \times 10^{12}}$. Second, a Boltzmann brain is not a single particle. It is a joint configuration of order $10^{14}$ informationally distinct cells. In a closed box of side $N$, the per-step probability that $k$ cells form a brain-shape connected cluster is bounded by the Klarner--Rivest lattice-animal count combined with Gibbs indistinguishability, $P_0 \leq k!\,(2eD)^k / N^{(k-1)D}$, exponentially small in $k$. The closed-box ideal is recurrent: Kac's lemma gives a mean recurrence time $\gtrsim 10^{2.22 \times 10^{13}}$ interaction steps: extremely long but finite. Any single physical departure from the closed-box-static idealization (slow thermal leakage at one missed step per universe lifetime, or cosmological expansion at one site added per universe lifetime) collapses the cumulative probability to $\lesssim 10^{-2.22 \times 10^{13}}$ even at $T \to \infty$. Either route suffices to block the standard divergence. Together they show that Boltzmann-brain dominance is not a consequence of recurrence alone, but of combining recurrence with an unlicensed temporal or observer-moment multiplier. (shrink)

In his monumental Philosophy of the Kalam the late Harry Wolfson--truly the most accomplished historian of philosophy in our century--examined the early medieval system of Islamic philosophy. He studies its repercussions in Jewish thought in this companion book--an indispensable work for all students of Jewish and Islamic traditions. Wolfson believed that ideas are contagious, but that for beliefs to catch on from one tradition to another the recipients must be predisposed, susceptible. Thus he is concerned here not so (...) much with the influence of Islamic ideas as with Jewish elaboration, adaptation, qualification, and criticism of them. To this end he examines passages reflecting Kalam views by a wide variety of Jewish thinkers, including Isaac Israeli, Judah Halevi, Abraham ibn Ezra, and Maimonides. As always in Wolfson's work, two aspects are apparent: the special dimensions of Jewish thought as well as its relation to other traditions. And as always his prose is both graceful and precise. The explicit Turing test fails to point at intelligence not because it is insensitive but because it was designed for a different question. The original imitation game presupposes the consciousness of its participants — a presupposition that dissolves in the AI case. Searle’s Chinese Room diagnoses this structural failure. We propose the implicit Turing test as the correct criterion: a system passes if and only if it can detect that its own constitutive interpretive frameworks have failed and revise them under (...) world-pressure. Every reasoning system operates through something analogous to Kant’s synthetic a priori — the lens through which experience becomes interpretable at all. Intelligence is the capacity to revise that lens when the world insists it has failed. The formal motivation is mathematical. Gödel’s incompleteness theorems, Turing’s halting problem, and the Löbian obstacle are the same diagonal argument in different notation, establishing that no sufficiently rich system can fully justify its own framework from within. External grounding is not a design preference but the only principled resolution that does not relocate the regress. We map current AI systems onto a five-level taxonomy of change. The most sophisticated self-improving architecture in existence — DGM-Hyperagents — operates at Level 3a, bounded by the Löbian obstacle, not any engineering limitation. The criterion is substrate agnostic and non-anthropocentric. A system that passes has solved the same problem humans solve to remain calibrated. Its moral status is not resolved by this result. The Bayesian polarization literature asks how rational agents can diverge given common evidence. This is the wrong question. In real-world political environments, evidence is not common. Fox News does not show what MSNBC shows. The convergence theorems fail not because of subtle differences in priors, likelihoods, or credibility assessments, but because their central premise—shared observation—is violated at scale. The existing literature models second-order effects while ignoring the first-order cause. This paper argues that most political polarization requires no sophisticated explanation: people (...) see different things. Interventions targeting cognition address the wrong problem. Claims concerning processes, claims of the form “x is φing”, have been the subject of renewed interest in recent years in the philosophy of action. However, this interest has frequently limited itself to noting certain formal features such claims have, and has not extended to a discussion of when they are true. This article argues that a claim of the form “x is φing” is true when what is happening with x is such that, if it is not interrupted, a (...) φing will occur. It then applies itself more directly to the case of action, arguing that when “x is φing” describes x's intentional action, it is true iff x is acting from a method she knows to be sufficient to φ, in the sense that if she is not interrupted in carrying out this method, she will φ. I use this criterion to argue that the carbon‐copier example Donald Davidson gives in “Intending” fails to refute Elizabeth Anscombe's claim that an agent who is φing intentionally knows that she is, because the agent in Davidson's example is not intentionally making the copies.
