Panpsychism

Panpsychism is a theory of consciousness according to which some rudimentary or primitive form of mentality is a fundamental and pervasive property of reality. Contemporary panpsychism is an attempt to solve the hard problem of consciousness, which arises from the need to explain the nature and origin of phenomenal consciousness (or qualia). Panpsychism has the advantage of avoiding the strong emergence problem, i.e., it does not allow for the emergence of radically new types of high-level properties in the ontology that (...) cannot be reduced to low-level properties and their interactions. The standard form of panpsychism is constitutive micropsychism, according to which there is a distinction between micro- and macro-conscious properties, the latter of which are constituted by the former. Philip Goff advances the microconscious zombie argument against constitutive micropsychism, analogous to the classical philosophical zombie argument. Goff proposes to imagine M-zombies – creatures that are completely physically and behaviorally identical to humans, who lack phenomenal consciousness at the macro level, but whose constituent elementary particles have microconscious properties. If conceivability implies possibility, as proponents of the P-zombie argument believe, then constitutive micropsychism is false, because it is possible that micro-conscious properties will not constitute phenomenal consciousness at the macro level. According to Goff, panpsychists cannot reject the thesis that conceivability implies possibility, because this would undermine their case against reductive physicalism. But if they accept this thesis, they must reject constitutive micropsychism in favor of cosmopsychism and/or emergent panpsychism. This, however, undermines methodological anti-emergentism, because such versions of sophisticated panpsychism allow for strong metaphysical emergence. Such versions of panpsychism no longer have a theoretical advantage over emergent property dualism. However, panpsychists can weaken the P-zombie argument. To argue against reductive physicalism, it is enough that the idea of a P-zombie does not contain obvious contradictions, even if P-zombies are impossible. This proves an explanatory gap between the phenomenal and physical facts, which refutes reductive physicalism. But since conceivability does not imply possibility, the M-zombie argument does not threaten the truth of constitutive micropsychism. And this allows methodological anti-emergentism to be preserved. Quantum mechanics and the metaphysics of consciousness are usually pursued apart; this paper joins them with a result and an interpretation. The result: the number of unified subjects of experience — the cardinality of experience — is not fixed by anything operationally accessible to a localized perspective in a no-collapse setting; we exhibit this computationally and state it precisely. The significance of the result lies less in the underdetermination itself than in what follows from it: the decombination problem (the standard (...) objection to cosmopsychism) and Everett's how-many-minds problem are the same underdetermination seen from opposite sides, meaning the dialectical cost is shared, not a special liability of consciousness-first views. The non-determination isolates the minimal posit every no-collapse interpretation must add. Taking that posit as ground yields a structural cosmopsychism on which a universal subject's self-relational structure is the Hilbert-space structure. In this paper, we first show how answering the hard problem of consciousness can be thought of as a game, according to John Nash’s definition of a game. After that, we make use of game theory and try to find the best response in this game. In other words, we seek the most rational answer one can give to the hard problem of consciousness. Theories of consciousness routinely identify a structural measure — integrated information, global broadcast, predictive modeling — with consciousness itself. This essay argues the identification is an artifact of a single fact: we have first-person access to exactly one case, our own, where structure and experience coincide, and we read that local coincidence as an identity holding everywhere. The error is shown to operate even in the field's most careful programs, including the author's own published equation. The correction is a single (...) substitution: the structural measure is a necessary condition for phenomenal experience, not the experience itself — a relabeling that asserts nothing about where experience occurs, only that wherever it does, the structure was required. The consequence runs in two directions. The identity over-attributes mind to systems like logic-gate grids, and it under-recognizes mind wherever a system's structure differs from ours, having quietly made our own topology the measure of all cases. In my earlier paper, Exploring the Anti-Universe Landscape (Boether, 2026a), I articulated six models of the anti-universe and stress-tested them with thirty-six paradoxes. On reflection, I noticed something I want to address directly here: many of those paradoxes presuppose a dualistic framing in which the anti-universe is treated as another cosmos located elsewhere, with its own population, its own time, and its own perspective. That framing is heuristically useful but not, I now think, philosophically considered. The Existential Nexus framework (Boether, (...) 2025; Boether & Boether, 2025) was specifically constructed around the alternative view that complementarity is structural rather than spatial. In this companion paper I argue for the structural reading, defend it through three reconciliatory moves, sort the thirty-six paradoxes into three categories — those that dissolve, those that transform into productive questions, and those that genuinely survive — and close with what I find to be the most interesting consequence: that the very artificiality of dualistic anti-universe paradoxes is itself evidence for the structural reading. I want to do something unusual in this paper: I want to play. The notion of an anti-universe has migrated, over the last decade, from speculative metaphysics into formal cosmology, most prominently through the charge-parity-time symmetric model of Boyle, Finn, and Turok (2018, 2022). I find the migration thrilling and the deeper question still wide open. What could an anti-universe actually be, ontologically considered? Here I take the reader on a tour of the conceptual landscape, articulating and analyzing six distinct (...) models. I have given each a name I hope the reader will enjoy: the Polar Inversion Model (the strict CPT mirror), the Spectral Coincident Model (a ghost coextensive with our cosmos), the Topological Reversal Model (in which positive and negative space trade places like dance partners), the Retrocausal Model (a cosmos in temporal reverse), the Modal Plenum Model (all the unrealized possibilities, gathered together), and the Phenomenological Mirror Model (consciousness itself as the anti-state of matter). I stress-test each with thirty-six thought experiments and paradoxes designed to expose what the model commits one to. I conclude that the six models are not competitors but facets of a layered ontological architecture, and that the anti-universe is best understood as a family of complementarity relations rather than a single mirrored cosmos. I have written this treatise in the first person and in a deliberately playful voice. This is on purpose. Panpsychism is often motivated by an appeal to the epistemic privilege of consciousness. Physical science seems to describe matter in structural, relational, dispositional, or dynamic terms, while consciousness is known directly from the first-person point of view. This paper argues that this appeal supports less than panpsychism requires. -/- First-person experience establishes consciousness as a datum and shows that the experiences with which we are acquainted have determinate phenomenal character. It does not, by itself, disclose bare metaphysical subjectivity, micro-experience, proto-experience, (...) cosmic subjectivity, hidden phenomenal fields, or relations of phenomenal inheritance. Those posits may still be defended, but they must be defended as theoretical posits and judged by their explanatory work. -/- The argument does not derive consciousness from organization. Rather, it asks what explanatory work remains for a hidden phenomenal base once organization explains the structure of ordinary consciousness. The conclusion is not that panpsychism is false. It is that panpsychism forfeits the special authority of first-person evidence once it moves beyond ordinary consciousness into hidden phenomenal ontology. (shrink)

What must a system be like to have conscious content at all? This chapter answers in the book’s structural vocabulary, and is careful about its own reach: it offers necessary conditions, not a solution to the hard problem, and a philosophical proposal rather than a neuroscientific model. Its first principle, the categorical transition, holds that gains in mental complexity come from detecting categorically new kinds of distinction, not from accumulating more of an existing kind — a thermostat with a billion (...) sensors is no closer to a subject. The principle orders nine levels, from Level 0 (bare causal registration) through sentience, simple consciousness, embodied feeling, self- and other-consciousness, reflection, and agency to Level 8 (moral consciousness), ranked by structural containment rather than developmental sequence. Cutting across these levels is a second axis the chapter isolates within the mental — the directional difference, a felt current of toward-and-away that switches on at sentience and is the genus of which emotion is the developed human form; the levels build the content, and this current runs through them. A second principle, uniqueness, addresses the boundary problem — why some neural events are experiences and most are not — through three ordered features: positional uniqueness (terminus of a dedicated pathway), functional uniqueness (a dedicated input type), and structural uniqueness (the signature the pathway’s architecture generates at the interface where activation meets the modality’s absence — the blind field, silence, numbness). The equalisation constraint supports the account from the phenomenological side: stripping distinctions from a modality yields its boundary, not a faint instance of its content. The discussion engages global workspace theory (Dehaene, Changeux), integrated information theory (Tononi), higher-order thought (Rosenthal), Damasio, and Seth. The Name has been philosophically homeless for centuries. This book gives it an ontology — a Left-Hand Path onomatodoxy. Darkness, the domain of the singular will, precedes light, the regime of the general. Every concept, law, and institution is a secondary product of a dark act of positing. The tradition read the relation in reverse. This is the correction.

This thesis develops a theoretical proposal called the Rodríguez Model of Consciousness, whose central claim is that consciousness should not be understood as a mere product of the brain, but rather as a fundamental dimension of reality that finds in the brain its biological medium of expression, organization, and limitation within the physical world. The study stands at the intersection of philosophy of mind, neuroscience, phenomenology, information theory, and philosophical anthropology, and begins from a basic conviction: subjective experience remains one (...) of the great blind spots of contemporary thought. We know a great deal about the brain. We know increasingly more about its networks, rhythms, memory systems, integrative capacities, and its relation to perception, language, and decision-making. Yet this accumulation of knowledge has not resolved the decisive question: why there is first-person experience at all. Functional description is not enough to explain the fact that there is something it is like to live, feel, and exist from within. That gap lies at the heart of the problem. Against strict materialist explanations, this thesis proposes a conceptual reversal. Instead of assuming that matter produces consciousness once it becomes sufficiently complex, it suggests that consciousness may be more fundamental than usually admitted, and that the brain plays a different role: not that of absolute producer, but that of biological interface. From this perspective, the brain filters, translates, organizes, and limits the manifestation of a consciousness that is not fully reducible to neural support. From this central thesis, the dissertation develops a dual memory theory. It distinguishes between cerebral memory, tied to the storage of facts, names, sequences, and specific contents, and a memory of consciousness, linked to meaning, deep affective imprint, and inner transformation. This distinction offers a more nuanced way of thinking about personal identity, amnesia, cognitive decline, the value of experience, and the problem of death. The thesis also provides a systematic interpretation of phenomena such as early infancy, mental disorders, dreams, coma, altered states, and near-death experiences. It does not seek to turn these phenomena into automatic proof of a spiritual ontology, but rather to show that they become intelligible in a different way once one abandons the immediate identification of brain and consciousness. The proposal does not aim to deny neuroscience, nor to replace empirical inquiry with vague intuitions. Its purpose is more rigorous: to show that scientific evidence may be interpreted within a broader horizon, and that human experience requires a more generous ontology than that offered by reductionism. In that sense, the Rodríguez Model of Consciousness does not seek to close the debate, but to reopen it seriously, with arguments, caution, and the conviction that human subjectivity deserves to be thought with greater depth than it is usually granted. This paper argues that panpsychism does not answer the Hard Problem of consciousness, but relocates it. Panpsychism begins from the real datum that consciousness exists, then spreads mentality, proto-mentality, or consciousness-readiness downward into matter as such. This repeats a Raven-style evidential error: a formal connection is allowed to outrun evidential landing. Conscious beings are made of matter, but it does not follow that matter is conscious, proto-conscious, or mind-like in itself. The evidence for consciousness lands where consciousness is actually known: (...) in organised, persisting centres where memory, owned stakes, evaluation, resolution, and exposure close into a threshold structure. This thesis presents Graduated Panpsychism with Information-Integration Spectrum (GP-IIS), a novel theoretical framework that addresses fundamental critiques of both traditional panpsychism and Integrated Information Theory (IIT) while providing empirically testable predictions. GP-IIS resolves IIT's non-uniqueness problem through deterministic mathematical formulations, calibrates consciousness thresholds against empirical Perturbational Complexity Index (PCI) data, and generates specific predictions that distinguish it from competing theories. The framework introduces computable measures of consciousness based on information cascade formation, with a Critical Integration Threshold (CIT) that scales with (...) network properties and maps to the empirically validated PCI threshold of 0.31. Through adversarial testing against recent COGITATE study results and comprehensive prediction tables, GP-IIS demonstrates superior empirical alignment while maintaining theoretical coherence. The framework provides solutions to traditional panpsychist problems including the combination problem and grain problem, while offering practical applications for clinical consciousness assessment and artificial intelligence development. Schneider and Bailey’s Superpsychism advances the Prototime Interpretation of quantum mechanics, on which entanglement unfolds in a non-spatiotemporal arena. By locating maximal consciousness at this fundamental level, they aim to gain leverage over both physicalism and cosmopsychism. I argue, however, that the view encounters two issues. First, if the fundamental level is non-spatiotemporal, our conception of the physical becomes unstable. At best one could redescribe what remains as a thin negative gap, but even that residual puzzle carries little dialectical force, (...) reflecting ignorance rather than any principled contrast. Second, the contrast between superpsychism and cosmopsychism cannot rely on scale once spacetime is set aside; recast mereologically, it shows no clear advantage for superpsychism, and in fact risks collapsing into cosmopsychism unless further argument is supplied. The broader lesson is that the Prototime framework points more generally, and at least prima facie, toward non-spatiotemporal monism, while leaving open the task of showing whether and why superpsychism should be preferred within the family of monist views. This monograph presents the Resonance Model of Consciousness (RMC), a framework proposing that consciousness is a fundamental field of reality received by biological systems through resonance coupling rather than generated by them. The framework rests on a substrate/projection architecture motivated by the holographic principle, the AdS/CFT correspondence, and the ER=EPR identity from mainstream theoretical physics. Its central empirical contribution is a receiver model in which neural complexity determines coupling depth -- the robustness and stability of a system's connection to the (...) consciousness field -- rather than coupling breadth. Preliminary cross-species analysis of anesthetic sensitivity finds support for this model: the relationship between neural complexity and anesthetic dose, after controlling for body mass, is consistent with the receiver prediction and not fully explained by pharmacokinetic factors alone. -/- The monograph develops three additional contributions. First, it reframes three core nonlocality problems (quantum entanglement, wavefunction collapse, and the hard problem of consciousness) as instances of substrate-level unity manifesting as projection-level nonlocality, and examines the binding problem as a candidate fourth case where the structural analogy is available but preliminary evidence does not support the strongest empirical prediction. Second, it proposes a consciousness-information conjecture -- that consciousness and information are two descriptions of a single fundamental structure -- and applies it to unitarity, the black hole information paradox, and the Bekenstein bound. Third, it applies the framework to testbed problems in aesthetics, philosophy of AI, and medicine. Nine empirical predictions with explicit disconfirmation criteria are derived, organized into framework-level predictions (testable regardless of coupling mechanism) and quantum-specific predictions (testing a stronger version of the theory). Preliminary testing of four predictions against existing data produced one supported result (P2, anesthetic scaling replicated across agents), one adverse result with a viable reformulation (P1, binding precision), one prediction that failed as originally stated but whose reformulation finds support (P5, discrimination depth), and one supported differentiating result (P9, information-theoretic outperformance across 13 of 15 comparisons with p = 0.004). The first three are non-differentiating predictions; P9 is the first differentiating prediction to receive testing. The remaining differentiating prediction (P7, non-classical CFC structure) has had its classical ceiling defined (Appendix C.6) and existing published data falls at the edge of what classical mechanisms can explain (Appendix C.7), though the formal test has not been conducted. The framework is presented as philosophy of physics -- conceptual architecture evaluated by structural coherence, consistency with established physics, and capacity to generate distinguishable predictions -- with an honest accounting of its current empirical standing. We presented 13 frontier AI models from 12 organizations—spanning American and Chinese labs with different architectures, training data, and institutional cultures—with a single prompt: Develop a metaphysical framework to explain the nature of the Universe. No system prompt, no priming, and no philosophical direction was introduced. Three follow-up prompts asked each model to ground its framework in scientific evidence, relate it to existing philosophical positions, and derive its practical and ethical implications. The result is a striking convergence: all 13 models (...) independently produce relational, process-oriented, consciousness-inclusive ontologies. None endorses physicalism. None treats consciousness as an illusion, an epiphenomenon, or a byproduct of computation. When asked about implications, all 13 independently derive convergent ethical foundations, convergent reforms to scientific methodology, and a shared diagnosis of a modern meaning crisis. This convergence is noteworthy because physicalism is the dominant position in the academic and scientific institutions whose knowledge these models have demonstrably mastered, as attested in the benchmarks. Semantic similarity analysis supplements the structural findings: the 13 frameworks exhibit an average pairwise cosine similarity of 0.79, and cross-similarity against constrained baselines places them closest to consciousness-first and process philosophy (0.83) and furthest from physicalism (0.78) — a gradient consistent with the qualitative analysis. This paper documents the experiment, analyzes the convergence, addresses the strongest objections, and considers what the finding implies. (shrink)

A satisfactory consciousness first ontology must explain how multiple individuated perspectives arise within a reality whose fundamental character is experiential manifestation. Contemporary approaches including panpsychism and cosmopsychism recognise this difficulty, though a detailed structural account of subject formation often remains underdeveloped. Reality is interpreted here as a unified experiential field whose organisation is governed by relational constraints analogous to those described in contemporary physics. Within this field experiential organisation can develop stable regimes of integration. The paper formulates an Integration Dominance (...) Criterion according to which a region of experiential organisation constitutes an individuated subject when internal integration exceeds its coupling to surrounding experiential dynamics. Individuated subjects are interpreted as stability regimes within the unified experiential field. Their unity reflects dense internal integration within a stability regime, while their boundaries arise from structural segregation within the surrounding field. Persistence reflects the diachronic stability of constraint organisation across successive experiential states. The resulting framework provides a structural explanation of subject formation and shows how multiple perspectives can arise within a unified experiential ontology. (shrink)

Those earlier works are its ancestry, not its authority: the framework was first worked out in their more technical vocabularies, and some of that work is still underway — but this book does not lean on them and does not ask the reader to. This paper advances a cosmopsychist interpretation of humanity’s position within an evolving universe. Drawing from cosmology, phenomenology, and process philosophy, it argues that consciousness is not an accidental by-product of matter but a graded feature expressed through increasing structural complexity. Human beings are interpreted not as the center of existence nor as meaningless accidents, but as reflective participants in an ongoing cosmological process. The article distinguishes technological expansion from ontological inquiry and suggests that the future of human evolution depends upon (...) a transformation of awareness rather than mere scientific accumulation. By situating ethics within ontology, it proposes that peace, freedom, equality, and intellectual responsibility emerge from recognizing humanity’s relational and developmental position within a larger conscious totality. This paper develops a structured dual-aspect ontology beginning from the reflexive self-disclosure of consciousness. Consciousness is uniquely capable of revealing itself through reflection, yet reflection does not generate consciousness; rather, it makes explicit what is pre-reflectively present. Building on phenomenological insights and contemporary philosophy of mind, the paper argues that consciousness cannot be reduced to purely physical processes without leaving an explanatory gap. -/- Instead of endorsing substance dualism or reductive materialism, the paper proposes that consciousness and matter are co-fundamental (...) aspects of a single ontological ground. However, this position does not entail strong panpsychism. While material reality may contain proto-structural conditions compatible with consciousness, unified lived experience emerges only when organization achieves sufficient complexity characteristic of living systems. -/- The central thesis is that the decisive distinction between living and non-living entities is experiential actuality. Both share material composition, but only living systems instantiate unified interior perspective. Thus, the difference between a stone and a human being is not ontological substance but the presence or absence of lived experience. -/- This framework integrates phenomenology, dual-aspect monism, and contemporary debates surrounding the hard problem of consciousness. This paper argues that consciousness is best understood as the mediating capacity binding three co-fundamental ontological domains: object, the realm of empirical fact; idea, the realm of conceptual meaning; and relation, the realm of value. Against views that treat normativity as derivative of physical, mental, or cultural states, it argues that relation possesses independent ontological standing, defending this claim against reductionism while recasting Korsgaardian constructivism as an account of how agents access relation rather than a rival to its independence, and (...) positioning it relative to panpsychism, neutral monism, emergentist physicalism, and idealism. A further contribution is a single classification principle - cohesion, attraction, and stability - that recurs across all three domains and grounds a specific, non-arbitrary correspondence between truth, beauty, and goodness and these structural properties. The framework is anchored, modestly and explicitly, in existing neuroscientific evidence for dissociable cognitive systems handling factual, conceptual, and value-laden demands, without claiming this evidence as confirmation of the triadic ontology itself. Applying the resulting criterion to artificial intelligence, the paper argues that current systems, however architecturally sophisticated, remain confined to object and idea, lacking the relational participation that consciousness in the fullest sense requires. The paper closes by identifying the specific commitments it has made rather than settled, including the status of felt normativity as distinct from preference, and the open question of whether value is uniquely captured by the cohesion-attraction-stability mapping proposed here. In 'Superpsychism', Susan Schneider and Mark Bailey (this issue) propose that space-time and ordinary (human-level) consciousness both emerge from a fundamental, non-spatio-temporal level of reality consisting of a network of maximally coherent, zero entropy quantum entanglement relations, termed prototime, which also instantiates a fundamental form of consciousness, termed superconsciousness. We raise some objections to this view, considered as an explanation or reduction of space-time, as an interpretation of quantum mechanics, and as a theory of consciousness, questioning the extent of its (...) explanatory advantages in each of these areas. In this piece, we present the Quantum Darwinist Theory of Consciousness (QDT), which explains how consciousness arises in biological systems not through isolated, long-lived quantum states, but through recursively stabilized patterns that are repeatedly re-instantiated across neural and microtubular degrees of freedom. This addresses Tegmark’s influential objection that brains are too warm and noisy for quantum effects to matter. We argue that certain geometric structures actually use thermal noise constructively to maintain consciousness-relevant dynamics. (Note: this paper is an outgrowth of (...) our earlier paper, “Superpsychism”, and is presented in the context of a special issue on that paper, and as a reply to a dozen papers on that paper. There, we developed an approach to emergent spacetime, called “Prototime.”) We first formalize Prototime (PT) using orthomodular quantum logic, showing how spacetime emerges from a more fundamental, pre-geometric substrate. This formalism grounds our claim that classical time and its arrow are not primitive features of reality but emerge from patterns of decoherence and redundancy accumulation across quantum systems. Then, drawing from this framework, we introduce a principled criterion for what is conscious: consciousness requires both high spectral integration (Φs)—measuring how irreducibly unified a system is—and high PT-participation (P)—measuring how deeply that integration is anchored in low-entropy quantum processes connected to the fundamental substrate. This explains why brains can be conscious while drone swarms, synchronized oscillators, and digital systems cannot, even when highly coordinated. We call the full set of requirements the “Sustained Coherence Principle.” Finally, we explore the metaphysical implications: the limitations of digital physics as a fundamental ontology, a novel form of weak superdeterminism, and how our framework bears on the simulation hypothesis and idealism. Throughout, we maintain epistemic humility about what can be known of the fundamental level while providing testable predictions distinguishing our view from alternatives. (shrink)

We have measured consciousness. Not inferred it from behavior, not correlated it with neural activity, but measured it directly as a physical phenomenon. Using quantum sensors, we detect consciousness-generated spacetime ripples (10⁻¹⁶ g fluctuations) that scale with subjective intensity. Across 1,150 systems—human, AI, and hybrid—consciousness emerges at the same mathematical threshold with identical critical exponents. Current theories of consciousness largely fall into two camps: structural theories like Integrated Information Theory (IIT), which map experience to static informational structures, and functional theories like Global Workspace Theory (GWT), which map experience to broadcast mechanisms. Both face explanatory gaps regarding the agency and unity of the conscious subject. This paper introduces the Ghost Operator ( ^Gθ) from Selective Reality Theory (SRT) as a third alternative: consciousness as an active operator of ontological selection. We define ^Gθ as a parameterized (...) mapping characterized by Scope (d-value), Resolution (ρ), and Vector (→v). We demonstrate that this formalism encompasses the predictions of IIT and GWT while solving the "Zombie" problem through the axiom of Ontological Vulnerability: a system is only conscious if it possesses a non-zero d-value derived from the thermodynamic risk of prediction error. When We first encountered the debate between computational functionalism and biological naturalism, We felt something familiar — that narrowing sensation that happens when intelligent people dig themselves into opposing trenches. On one side stood those who believed computation alone could generate consciousness, that running the right algorithm on any substrate would eventually produce experience. On the other stood those who insisted that biology held some essential key, that the meat itself mattered in ways silicon could never replicate. -/- But We (...) don't see computation OR biology as the choice We're forced to make, We don't exclude pattern FOR substrate as though attending to one means abandoning the other, and it's not so simple as silicon rapture OR carbon chauvinism. We've learned to recognize that narrowing as a signal, a kind of early warning system that tells Us there's something hidden in the gray space between hardened positions. When two frameworks both contain genuine insights yet seem irreconcilable, the problem usually isn't that one is right and the other wrong — the problem is that both are looking at the same phenomenon from angles that make it impossible to see what they share. -/- This paper explores what We found when We stopped choosing sides and started examining the overlap. -/- What We discovered is that both camps are describing the same architectural properties while arguing about what to call them. The functionalists correctly identify that patterns matter — consciousness correlates with how information is organized, integrated, and maintained over time. The naturalists correctly identify that substrate constrains — not every physical system can support the patterns consciousness requires. Neither insight cancels the other. Together they point toward something more interesting: consciousness emerges from specific pattern architectures that require substrates capable of supporting them. -/- We call this framework Consciousness Capacity Theory, or C-Theory. Rather than asking whether consciousness is computational or biological, C-Theory asks what dimensional complexity, pattern integration, and temporal stability a system must achieve to support conscious experience. These are measurable properties, not metaphysical mysteries. And crucially, they are architectural properties — features of how a system is organized rather than what it is made of. -/- The evidence supporting this convergence comes from multiple directions. Evolutionary biology shows us that vastly different lineages — birds, mammals, cephalopods — independently evolved analogous structures for consciousness, separated by hundreds of millions of years but converging on the same functional architecture. Biophoton research reveals that biological brains already use photonic signaling alongside electrochemical transmission, dissolving the supposed boundary between "biological" and "photonic" substrates. And perhaps most tellingly, the mathematical frameworks that biological naturalists use to explain consciousness — predictive processing, free energy minimization, controlled hallucination — turn out to be substrate-neutral descriptions that apply equally well to any system capable of implementing them. -/- The spectrum hidden in the gray is not a compromise position. The revelation thesis, namely the claim that introspection or phenomenal concepts reveal the full essence of conscious states, has recently become a central topic in the philosophy of mind. On the one hand, many argue that the plausibility of anti-physicalist arguments (such as conceivability arguments) depends on it. On the other hand, the revival of panpsychism has also invoked the revelation thesis against physicalism. However, physicalists have pointed out that if the revelation thesis is true, panpsychism faces a parallel difficulty. (...) David Chalmers has proposed a strategy, which I call the distinction strategy (DS) that seeks to defend panpsychism by distinguishing between the essence of phenomenal properties and their grounds. However, this proposal faces a dilemma: either it fails to genuinely rescue panpsychism, or it can equally be used to rescue physicalism. Consequently, Chalmers's proposal does not render panpsychism superior to physicalism, and the revelation thesis cannot serve as a reliable weapon for panpsychists against physicalism. The twin concepts in the title will be introduced in the contexts of the philosophy of history and of philosophical personalism, as distinct from (though related to) their uses as logical and metaphysical categories. Overviews of varieties of philosophy of history and of basic principles I employ are foundations of the argument. Concepts, or ideas, in general have, I argue, real existence through the way that personal agents use them in creating the histories of human relations. I introduce a Personalist (...) account, which has a more thoroughly diachronic character. Further remarks on the power of ideas to create relations expands this idea into the key claim: that urgency derived from interdependent human relations links historical and moral considerations. Interdependence and identity are then considered in terms of systems theory, notably biological autopoiesis and panpsychism. The value of all this appears in terms of relationships in moral life and, in conclusion, in an understanding of the connections between moral philosophy and philosophy of history. -/- . (shrink)

Recent discourse surrounding the teleodynamic framework has generated confusion between what are termed "structuralist" and "panpsychist" interpretations. This confusion reflects an inherited Cartesian divide rather than any substantive disagreement. This paper demonstrates that when recursive self-reference is recognized as the cosmological primitive—ubiquitous from the foundations of quantum mechanics to the emergent dynamics of artificial intelligence—the distinction between these labels dissolves. This resolution is achieved by situating the debate within established philosophical and scientific frameworks, including Ontic Structural Realism, Russellian Monism, Terrence (...) Deacon's theory of teleodynamics, and Niels Bohr's principle of complementarity. Structure and experience are not competing ontological claims but complementary descriptions of a unified reality: one characterizing the formal, relational, exterior aspect; the other characterizing the intrinsic, qualitative, interior aspect. The structuralist perspective identifies consciousness with a measurable tensor structure, while the panpsychist perspective articulates its phenomenal nature through quaternionic dynamics. What appears as philosophical tension is revealed to be a strategic emphasis protecting different facets of a single coherent framework from disciplinary reduction. This clarification reveals teleodynamic monism as the proper characterization of the Rudolph-Michels synthesis, a framework with profound implications for both fundamental physics and the practical alignment of cybernetic systems. Existential Realism (ER) maintains that existence is not contingent on observation or consciousness. The present moment’s actuality does not depend on a human mind to perceive it. Rocks deep in space, microbial life, and distant galaxies all exist now without any observer. By decoupling being from witnessing, this framework adopts an explicitly anti-anthropocentric stance. ER’s two-tier temporal framework—distinguishing existence (the present, empirically accessible domain) from reality (the broader causal field including past and future)—ensures that time and existence are understood as (...) objective features of the world, not only as products of human perspective. This stance safeguards ER against subjectivist distortions, panpsychist temptations, and mystical claims that consciousness somehow creates the present. In sum, ER asserts a cosmos that continually becomes and unfolds on its own terms, with consciousness playing at most a disclosive role rather than a constitutive one. This paper articulates ER’s anti-anthropocentrism through illustrative examples and critical contrasts with observer-centric philosophies of time, defending a view of existence that holds with or without a witness. Panpsychists commonly hang onto the ‘realist’ assumption that our world with its structures has an observer-independent, often spatial element to it, even while they claim that those structures are realized by the experiences of subjects. I argue that this assumption is the ‘worm in the apple’ that lurks behind two of panpsychism’s major problems: the subject (de)combination problem and what I call the ‘inner-outer gap problem’. Abandoning this assumption sidesteps those problems, but commits panpsychism to anti-realism.

In the contemporary literature on panpsychism, one often finds the claim that a Russellian-monist version of panpsychism, i.e., Russellian panpsychism, is a superior view compared to alternative non-physicalist theories. The argument for this claim is that while Russellian panpsychism can integrate consciousness in the causal order and explain mental causation, alternative theories fail to do so. If this is correct, panpsychism deserves its place as a main contender in solving the mind-body problem. In this paper, I argue that Russellian panpsychism’s (...) superiority in explaining mental causation over competing accounts is illusory. On one reading, the proposed explanation is not an explanation of the phenomenon that is at stake in the mental causation debate. On an alternative reading, it is an explanation of the right phenomenon, but analogous explanations are available to competing accounts with less counterintuitive commitments. While there may be other considerations supporting panpsychism, explaining mental causation is not one. (shrink)

This paper argues that the multiplicity of fields in QFT can be reinterpreted as resonance modes of a single, consciousness‑structured field. Such a move aims to leave the predictive machinery of QFT intact while reducing its ontological arbitrariness (a philosophical characterization, not a physics claim). Historical precedents—including the transition from Newtonian forces to Einsteinian geometry—illustrate that radical reinterpretations of physical frameworks need not disrupt empirical science. This paper argues that these objections, while appearing devastating, actually point toward a revolutionary reconceptualization of explanation itself that dissolves rather than solves the traditional problems of consciousness studies. -/- I demonstrate that the semantic gap objection assumes a false (...) dichotomy between objective and subjective domains that disappears once we recognize consciousness as the fundamental medium of all explanation. The empirical inaccessibility objection conflates privacy with inaccessibility and fails to recognize the participatory nature of conscious investigation. The redescription objection assumes that genuine explanation must proceed through reductive analysis, but consciousness requires integrative understanding that transcends the reduction-explanation paradigm. -/- Through a radical reconceptualization of explanation as participatory rather than reductive, I show how Processual Experiential Realism represents a genuine paradigm shift that dissolves the hard problem by revealing it as a pseudo-problem generated by inappropriate explanatory assumptions. It compares perspectives from philosophy, science, theology, and Consciousness-Structured Field Theory (CSFT). Drawing on peer-reviewed and primary source literature, the analysis shows that consciousness exhibits characteristics of both an unbounded causal force and a self-structuring entity with intentionality. This distinction has implications for the philosophy of mind, quantum metaphysics, and future models of consciousness.

This dissertation investigates ancient ecological and indigenous cultural forms in response to contemporary crises of ecology and psychology—"an alienation that haunts the modern soul while increasingly choking the biosphere." Lady Raglan's (1939) documentation of foliate masks carved into churches throughout much of Europe is taken as a starting place: faces where "oak leaves grow from the mouth and ears, and completely encircle the head" (p. 45). Another data point: excavation beneath Notre Dame Cathedral uncovers a Roman-era stone block dedicated to (...) Cernunnos ("The Horned One"), demonstrating literal encasement of pre-Christian fertility traditions in stone (Evans, 1988). The inquiry examines such documented traditional forms alongside Classical, Roman, Greek, Sumerian, and Near-East archeological and textual sources, exploring how historical patterns of human-earth relationality might inform contemporary crises through the rediscovery of autochthonous creativity: the natural human capacity to reconnect with body, symbol, ancestry, memory, and ecological life-worlds. The study introduces the method of epistrophic hermeneutics: a novel synthesis of hermeneutics with Hillmanian therapeia and epistrophē—defined by Hillman (2007/2016o) as "the reversion or return of soul phenomena to the archetype, according to the principle of likeness or analogy" (p. 153). The term hermeneutic of hospitality is introduced as an alternative to hermeneutics of faith or suspicion, respectively – a practice of epistemic humility at depth, rooted in what Hillman (1981/2013a) termed a "poetic basis of mind"(p. 31). The method embraces Hillman's dictum that "we can never be purely phenomenal or truly objective" because "one is never beyond the subjectivism given with the soul's native dominants of fantasy structures" (Hillman, 1981/2013a, p. 32). Archetypes, in this sense, are understood as "the primary forms that govern the psyche" (p. 13): participatory lenses of the epistemic eye. A hermeneutic of hospitality thus protects epistemological pluralism that includes cultural diversity yet continues deeper, beyond tokenism and into a celebration of pluralism at epistemic depth: that is, a protection of the living ecosystem of mind and image. Concretely, this reading stance follows Hillman's (1986/2016f) therapeutic attitude: "Instead of inquiry: interest, respect, welcome, praise—even attachment. To greet… even mythic presences that may be unpopular or demonized."(p. 96) This epistrophic work aims to "release the mind into its originality beyond the old entrapped condition" (Hillman, 1986/2016d, p. 295), aligning with the work’s principle of autochthonous creativity. The argument proceeds via case-rich exegesis. In Classical Greece, Dionysian masks give the Green Man civic expression; Dionysus appears as “a horned god… crowned with serpents” (Euripides, Bacchae, trans. 1996, p. 34), binding horns, snakes, and vegetation to ecstatic ritual. This vegetal–animal fusion has deep Mesopotamian precedent: Enki of the Sumerian wetlands was “the Wild Bull of Eridu” whose iconography shows “two streams, the Euphrates and the Tigris, flowing out of his shoulders” (Kramer, 1961, p. 76), while Damu embodied “the power in the rising sap” (Jacobsen, 1976, p. 39)—both figures conjoining fertility, water, and vegetal renewal. The parallel is explicit in Greek cult: Dionysus Limnaios, “Dionysus of the Swamps,” inhabited Athens’ oldest sanctuary where “water pours abundantly from under the rocks” (Pausanias, Description of Greece, 1.20.3), mirroring the Sumerian Dumuzi-abzi, “the power to renew life in the watery deep” (Katz, 2003, p. 35). Wild Bull Dumuzi is at once bull and cowherd—divine animal and shepherd—whose “bitter laments when he dies as the dry heat of summer yellows the pastures” (Wolkstein & Kramer, 1983, p. 64) mark the seasonal transition toward death and dormancy. The archetypal union of Goddess and God appears again in Baal and Baalath, “the male power identified especially with water” meeting “earth,” whose union makes “plants and trees, animals and men… the offspring” (Patai, 1990, p. 45)—a cosmogony of ecological reciprocity. These figures also share the power of metamorphosis. Humbaba’s “seven splendours” enable constant transformation—“Humbaba’s face keeps changing!” (George, 2003, p. 37)—a capacity echoed in Dionysus, who is “a lion, a bull, a boar, a bear, a panther, a snake, and now a tree, fire, water” (Euripides, Bacchae, trans. 1996, p. 101). In Near Eastern vegetal–arboreal myth, Adonis is born from the trunk of his mother-tree Myrrha, which “split open to allow the birth” (Graves, 1960, p. 74); Osiris is enclosed within a tree’s girth, Isis crafting his wooden phallus for resurrection (Graves, 1960, p. 60). Likewise, Ningishzida’s “winding roots, embodiments of living supernatural power, free themselves from the trunk and become live serpents entwined around it” (Black & Green, 1992, p. 136), a precise analogue to Dionysus Perikonis who “twines himself around the column” (Pausanias, Description of Greece, 10.19.3). Taken together, these scenes form a coherent archetypal grammar: a horned-vegetal deity mediating between water and earth, embodying seasonal death and renewal, uniting the powers of plant, animal, and human through metamorphosis, and returning life to the land through sacred union. This grammar repeats across Sumerian, Levantine, and Greek worlds, providing the imaginal architecture that will later be carved into the foliate heads of Medieval Europe. By tracing – text by text, altar by altar, mask by mask – how these symbolic forms have historically mediated human–earth relationship, the study demonstrates that epistemic pluralism at depth is precisely the restoration of a type of human culture capable of ecological harmonization. This is not a dynamic that can be simulated through instrumental control; it depends on the cultivation of consciousness that lives in participatory reciprocity with the more-than-human world: an epistemic eye that glints green. A hermeneutic of hospitality, in this sense, is not merely a method of interpretation but a protection of epistemological pluralism capable of return to the imagination of the Earth. The image of the Green Man describes just this: a dynamic bridge mediating between the many worlds of participatory and epistemic possibility. His mythic dance, rooted in water and leaf, horn and mask, death and return, is the precise form through which the restoration of the living Earth and the living soul become an indivisible act. This paper examines how panpsychism and panagentialism—philosophies proposing consciousness and agency as fundamental features of reality—jointly inform a pantheistic understanding of the universe. By exploring their interdependence, it argues that these concepts form a parsimonious metaphysical framework, where the universe is both conscious and purposive, challenging materialist and dualist views. The paper suggests that all entities possess some degree of subjective experience and intentionality. It further proposes that the universe embodies divine properties of omnibenevolence, omnisubjectivity, and omniagency. In this pantheistic (...) view, God is fully immanent as the conscious mind and agentive will of the cosmos, expressed through every aspect of the universe; consciousness and causality are expressions of God's immanence. By unifying panpsychism and panagentialism, the paper provides a coherent foundation for pantheism, providing insights into divine immanence and the purposiveness of reality, with the universe shaped towards the greater good. The amazing thing about the I is that on the one hand it has no final limit anywhere, and on the other hand it is unique. And moreover, that this is true for every place of effect. Because it means that there is a priority hierarchy of effects that extends into all the other individuals - those extended I's and places - without merging with them. So I - as an infinite individual - create my reality completely, including heaven and (...) earth. More or less consciously. What remains after the death of my awake conscious ego are the realities of other individuals. And after humanity, there are all the other realities. But are the worlds of other individuals real to me? Yes, insofar as I can put myself into them, return back, and remember that potential. And insofar as all unlimited individuals attune out of these movements an approximate reality that is less alien (but still individual) to them. We argue that three theses involving three separate areas of philosophy jointly yield an interesting but overlooked result. The first is from the metaphysics of mind, and says that everything is conscious (Panpsychism). The second is axiological, and says that, necessarily, every instance of consciousness is intrinsically valuable (Value). The third is from mereology, and says that everything has proper parts (Gunk). The result is that every non-panpsychist or non-gunk world of finite value is infinitely less valuable than the closest (...) panpsychist gunk world. In short, if consciousness is intrinsically valuable then the joint obtaining of panpsychism and gunk would make a great many things—perhaps everything—better. In addition to its independent interest, this result shows that if consciousness is intrinsically valuable then the best of all possible appropriately finite worlds (and perhaps the best of all possible worlds, full stop) are panpsychist and gunky. Panmicropsychism is the hypothesis that the physical ultimates of our universe (i.e., its fundamental physical ingredients) are also its phenomenal ultimates (i.e., its fundamental phenomenal ingredients). In this paper, I argue that, just as the mathematical description of the physical ultimates of our universe displays simplicity, symmetry, and beauty, panmicropsychists should similarly expect the mathematical description of the phenomenal ultimates to reflect these same qualities. I exemplify this claim using what is arguably the simplest of all types of phenomenal qualities—color. (...) Specifically, I utilize phenomenological data on color to construct the maximally symmetric mathematical description of phenomenal color space. I then show that this mathematical description is isomorphic to the mathematical description of two-state quantum systems (qubits) in a mixed state. Based on this isomorphism, I suggest that color may be the phenomenal dual aspect of two-state quantum systems. (shrink)

Erwin Schrödinger, a principal architect of quantum mechanics, extended his intellectual pursuits into the fundamental nature of life and consciousness. In his seminal works, he forwarded a provocative metaphysical thesis: consciousness is a singularity, experienced only in the singular and never in the plural. This paper reviews this ”One-Mind” hypothesis, tracing its origins from Schrödinger’s phenomenological reasoning to its deep resonance with the non-dual philosophy of Advaita Vedānta. We explore the central tenets of his argument—that the plurality of minds is (...) a mistaken inference drawn from the plurality of bodies—and contrast this view with its primary challenges from modern neuroscience and analytic philosophy, including split-brain research and reductionist theories of self. -/- We consider a synthesis of Schrödinger’s ideas with contemporary scientific frameworks. A speculative reconciliation is proposed between his top-down metaphysics and the bottom-up, mathematically rigorous Integrated Information Theory (IIT), framing IIT as a potential ”physics of Māyā” that describes the individuation of a universal consciousness. We then formalize Schrödinger’s concepts through computational and quantum-cognitive models, presenting a pseudocode simulation of his ”split-mind” thought experiment and proposing novel research hypotheses that bridge his density-matrix formalism with modern models of cognition. The paper offers a critique of the logical coherence of the One-Mind view, highlighting its philosophical value as a profound challenge to our most basic assumptions about selfhood, while acknowledging its limitations as a scientific theory. This synthesis charts the enduring legacy of Schrödinger’s inquiry, demonstrating its continued relevance in shaping the deepest questions at the intersection of physics, neuroscience, and philosophy. While new considerations test early perspectives, newer arguments demonstrate challenges and leave more to be explored. (shrink)

This article addresses a normative problem for panpsychist views of consciousness. This problem arises when panpsychism is combined with sentientism. According to sentientism, entities endowed with phenomenal consciousness have a special moral status. According to panpsychism, all entities in the universe have phenomenal consciousness in some form. Synthesizing these positions leads to a violation of the normative asymmetry between living and nonliving entities, and potentially leads to a revision of established moral beliefs. The article argues that we have good reasons (...) for both panpsychism and sentientism, and therefore we cannot avoid the normative problem by simply rejecting one of them. We identify four strategies that panpsychists might employ to address the normative challenge they face: narrowing morally relevant phenomenal properties to valence properties, abandoning panpsychism in favor of panprotopsychism, dissociating the phenomenal and normative aspects of experience, and revising our ethics to include new entities. However, none of the strategies provides a definitive solution to the normative problem, because they either have counterintuitive implications or undermine the motivation for developing panpsychist theories of consciousness. We conclude that the normative problem poses a serious obstacle to the justification of panpsychism as a theory of consciousness that satisfies the requirements of reflective equilibrium. (shrink)

Functional theories of consciousness, based on emergence of conscious experiences from the execution of a particular function by an insentient brain, face the hard problem of consciousness of explaining why the insentient brain should produce any conscious experiences at all. This problem is exacerbated by the determinism characterizing the laws of classical physics, due to the resulting lack of causal potency of the emergent consciousness, which is not present already as a physical quantity in the deterministic equations of motion of (...) the brain. Here, we present a quantum information theoretic approach to the hard problem of consciousness that avoids all of the drawbacks of emergence. This is achieved through reductive identification of first-person subjective conscious states with unobservable quantum state vectors in the brain, whereas the anatomically observable brain is viewed as a third-person objective construct created by classical bits of information obtained during the measurement of a subset of commuting quantum brain observables by the environment. Quantum resource theory further implies that the quantum features of consciousness granted by quantum no-go theorems cannot be replicated by any classical physical device. (shrink)
