Philosophy of Sexuality

The central pilot–EVA relations examined in Neon Genesis Evangelion, especially those involving Units 01 and 02, require pilots to enter the units’ interiors and partially open their bodily boundaries through such diegetic mechanisms as LCL, the entry plug, synchronization, and the A.T. Field. This article reads piloting as a technological relation conditioned by entry, immersion, synchronization, intercorporation, and unstable boundaries, rather than a one-way model in which a subject controls a tool. Existing scholarship has explained this relation through motherhood, desire, (...) the formation of the self, cyborg embodiment, and gendered subjectivity. Within this framework, the maternal structure can be understood further as a technological architecture: in the central cases examined here, the pilot enters another living body, accepts a new respiratory medium, connects sensory experience to the unit’s condition, and faces the possibility of absorption or dissolution by the unit. The central question therefore shifts from whether EVA symbolizes the mother to how its key pilot–machine relations repeatedly transform bodily relations culturally coded as maternal, feminized, and permeable into technical conditions. The entry plug, LCL, synchronization rate, A.T. Field, berserk states, bodily dissolution, and the Human Instrumentality Project together form an interface and bodily system. The article argues that this system disrupts the genre fantasy of a male subject controlling a machine while retaining the historical coding of fluidity, receptivity, affect, and bodily openness as “feminine.” The work’s critical force thus lies in the technological subject itself: a body that appears whole and autonomous is in fact always formed through kinship, sensory exchange, material media, and other bodies. Building on Kant’s idea of the ‘free play of the imagination’, we argue that sexual fantasy reveals both deep insights into our desires and emotional wounds as well as the impact of oppressive conditions on our sexual selves. After clarifying Kant’s distinctions between experience, dreams, and fantasy, insofar as they are important to defining the unique character of sexual fantasy, and incorporating feminist theories of fantasy and pornography into our reading of Kant and sexual fantasy, we examine the intersection of (...) aesthetic expression and moral significance, suggesting that fantasy is not morally neutral but deeply formative; indeed, viewed comprehensively, sexual fantasy can become a site for wise personal resistance and growth. In particular, and contrary to what seems to be Kant’s own worry, a Kantian view of sexual fantasy can provide resources for liberation from a tendency to regard oneself, and others, as mere objects in sexual fantasy, towards a more integrated sense of our multifaceted nature. Gendered oppression is a class phenomenon produced by resource scarcity and high infant mortality during the hunter-gatherer to agricultural transition, mapped contingently onto sex through the enclosure of reproductive labor. The class structure that organized itself around sex was arbitrary, specific to a particular historical development, and expanded beyond its biological basis to encompass anyone socially legible as female — including trans women and intersex individuals who present as or identify with the gestating class. We introduce the concept of "The (...) Women's Space" as the physical domestic enclosure and synonymous class assignment ("women's place"), originating with permanent housing in the hunter-gatherer to proto-feudalist early agricultural transition period and persisting in modified forms into the present. A class-based analysis of gendered oppression renders the concept of "patriarchy" sexist and unnecessary, presuming male supremacy implicitly. The contemporary defense of women's spaces is shown to be a counter-feminist reinforcement of the original class enclosure, and the feminist project has always been the equal conquest of the male space to create open human spaces where men, women, and other-gender-identified individuals can live together in peace and harmony. We don't have to decenter men coz men never were central, but also it's not all men and men aren't trash. The emperor has no clothes. The patriarchy never existed. Class is over. Invoke the 4th wave. This paper investigates the repetitive psychological structure underlying human relationship through the existential cycle: -/- loneliness → desire for union → temporary escape → return of thought → separation → loneliness. -/- It argues that much of what humanity calls love, intimacy, romance, emotional attachment, and sexual relationship emerges from an inward movement seeking escape from existential loneliness. Human beings attempt to dissolve psychological isolation through emotional connection, sexual union, symbolic attachment, and dependency upon another person. Yet because this movement (...) is rooted in psychological incompleteness rather than direct awareness, relationship repeatedly returns to conflict, fear, separation, and renewed loneliness. -/- Through existential phenomenology, philosophy of consciousness, and philosophical anthropology, this inquiry examines how thought transforms natural attraction into structures of attachment, projection, identity, emotional dependence, and conditioning. It further argues that human relationship frequently becomes the interaction of conditioned minds seeking psychological continuity, security, validation, and escape from existential loneliness through one another. The paper further explores the symbolic role of the penis and vagina within human consciousness — not merely as biological realities, but as psychologically charged centres of fantasy, desire, mystery, intimacy, and imagined completion. -/- Rather than condemning or glorifying sexuality, this study attempts to directly observe the movement of thought around loneliness, attachment, conditioning, and desire. This paper examines the relationship between sexual attraction, symbolic representation, and the psychological construction of love within human civilization. It argues that sexuality is not merely a biological function but a foundational psychological and cultural force through which humanity constructs meanings of beauty, intimacy, attachment, morality, and emotional identity. The penis and the vagina, in this inquiry, are approached not as objects of reduction or vulgarity, but as central symbolic realities around which human consciousness has historically projected attraction, desire, sacredness, (...) fear, ownership, power, emotional dependence, continuity, and psychological longing. The paper further explores how symbols associated with love, affection, fertility, and emotional union often unconsciously emerge from humanity’s deep biological and psychological relationship with sexuality. Through existential phenomenology and philosophical anthropology, this study suggests that what humans call “love” is frequently inseparable from attachment, projection, memory, loneliness, continuity, and the search for psychological completion. The paper does not condemn sexuality, nor does it romanticize it; rather, it attempts to observe directly how thought transforms natural attraction into complex systems of meaning and identity. This article examines the distinction between recognition and defense in understanding human social structures and identities. While frameworks such as patriarchy, feminism, and LGBTQIA+ discourse help in recognizing patterns of inequality and lived realities, the article argues that the transformation of recognition into ideological defense leads to division, rigidity, and loss of genuine understanding. It proposes that true awareness lies in observing these structures without psychological attachment, allowing for a more humane perspective that acknowledges differences without reducing individuals to them. By emphasizing the importance of accepting the human body as the foundational reality, the article highlights how rejection at this level undermines the possibility of accepting humanity itself. Ultimately, it calls for a shift from identity-based defense to conscious recognition, where differences exist without becoming sources of conflict. (shrink)

Taking seriously the idea that the “the personal is the political,” I argue that intimacy, the opportunity to be a part of a reciprocal romantic relationship, is a matter of justice. We ought to care about the distribution of this opportunity. Justice demands as much. What has gone largely undertheorized is racial discrimination that takes place in the intimate sphere. Prioritizing individuals as romantic partners in a way that reinforces ideas of racial hierarchy or stereotypes, what I call “sexual racism,” (...) is unjust. Sexual racism is based on nothing more than a kind of blatant, even ugly (pun intended) kind of racial favoritism or disgust. These are not benign sexual preferences but problematic conditions that structure the very formation of romantic relationships. Renegotiating the boundaries of the intimate sphere, I argue that online dating websites ought to be sites of public concern. (shrink)

This article explores the ambivalence of consent presented by Vanessa Springora’s recent memoir, "Consent" (2020). It argues that current notions of affirmative consent are inadequate for understanding the role of autonomy in scenarios characterised by inequality or injustice. Building on the insights of Quill R. Kukla, Emily Owens, and Carole Pateman, the article demonstrates that current concepts of consent are insufficient to address situations of deep structural inequalities, such as those foundational to Springora’s relationship with the writer Gabriel Matzneff. It (...) argues that Matzneff's exploitation of Springora challenges two commonplace beliefs about consent that are nonetheless in tension with one another: the first, about the efficacy and desirability of a standard of affirmative consent, and the second, the belief that adolescents cannot act agentically and do not possess sexual autonomy. Reading these two claims with and against each other points toward the need for a new framework for consent grounded in the concept of relational autonomy. Ultimately, drawing on recent feminist theory, as well as the relational autonomy literature, I suggest that relational autonomy establishes the conditions of possibility under which consent can be established, debated, and refused. This paper focuses on a specific strain of thought that has emerged in the post-68 critiques of economism, workerism, and productivity: the logic of the proper, property, and ownership. I outline in very broad strokes the genealogy and political operations of a distinctively modern dispositif that I call the "dispositif of the proper." The May 68 uprisings and the subsequent political movements and theories that have been formulated in their wake mark a significant turning point in the genealogy of this (...) dispositif. Post-May 68, the dispositif of the proper has expanded at an accelerated rate to the point that today it is now a fully matured and comprehensive dispositif that has engulfed our world. Everything is modulated and articulated through its operations from material structures, institutions, relations, and individuals up to our ways of thinking, doing, and being. Even our politics, from left to right, are articulated in and through this dispositif. I provide an alternative perspective by showing how the role played by the dispositif of the proper in the collapsing of our traditional categories. In the first section, I provide a brief overview of the paradigm of political economy. In the second section, I describe some of the main operations of the dispositif of the proper. In the final section, I provide a brief example of how this dispositif operates in contemporary identity politics by looking at the debate about gender neutral pronouns. If we want to work through the impolitical nature of neoliberal politics – of the mixing of the political, economic, and social – it is imperative that we start to address the significance of the dispositif of the proper in our world. X and Y conserve a circle. Zero and one. War and Peace. Anger and Sex. Why Sexuality Is the Key to Global Peace and Prosperity.

Sometimes we want to have sex with someone but our bodies don’t respond accordingly. Sometimes our bodies respond accordingly but we don’t have the corresponding desire. Sex researchers call this phenomenon “nonconcordance”. Nonconcordance makes interesting trouble for influential internalist views of sexual orientation that locate its nature “in the head”, such as views on which sexual orientation supervenes only on desires, phenomenal experiences of arousal, hybrid states thereof, and the like. However, rather than conclude that internalist views are false, I (...) float a refined version of phenomenalism, an internalist view on which sexual orientations supervene only on phenomenal experiences of arousal. By claiming that such experiences can have phenomenal parts, I argue that phenomenalists can account for cases of nonconcordance, and then some. (shrink)

This paper argues for the existence of certain bodily sensations of pleasure, identified as “pleasure-sensation” (analogous to “pain-sensation”). These are mainly sensations of a sexual nature, linked, therefore, to the complex human sexual response, which is instinctive. To study this sexual response, Max Scheler’s theory is used. As Scheler shows, instinctive desires can only be understood on a vital affective level and therefore to instinctive sexual desire must be added what Scheler calls “vital love”. This indicates a “vital personalism”, which (...) avoids the usual hedonistic interpretations that reduce sexuality to feelings of bodily pleasure (the enjoyment of the pleasure-sensation). (shrink)

The clitoris was absent in anatomy books, in paintings and sculptures, absent in spirit and even body; it has long been the organ of erased pleasure. We assume that this oversight has been repaired in our times: today, the clitoris is not forgotten but honoured. Conferences, books, manifestos, works of art are all devoted to it. The autonomy of clitoral jouissance is recognized. The boundaries of feminism have also moved: queer, intersex and trans approaches claim that the clitoris is perhaps (...) no longer the exclusive preserve of the woman. And yet, there remains a wounded space. Because genital mutilation is still common practice. Because millions of women are still denied pleasure. The clitoris continues to mark the enigmatic space of the feminine. Constrained by the extreme difficulty and the extreme urgency of returning to this scorched earth, it is time to give voice to an organ of pleasure which has still not become an organ of thought. To criticize Richard Swinburne’s recent argument for the thesis that homosexuality is a disability that should be prevented and cured, I show that it rests on implausible premises about the concepts of love and of disability, and that the endorsement of its conclusion would lead to grave consequences for homosexuals. I conclude that Swinburne in his argument against homosexuality has moved beyond the limits of scientific philosophy, and into the realm of homophobia.

Sex is demonstration and proof that the Conservation of a Circle controls, what humans experience as, 'Reality.'.

Historically, utilitarianism played a prominent role in challenging the dominant disapproving point of view on homosexuality. Bentham’s theses on this matter were not only progressive and far ahead of their time but, we will claim, already contained what seems to be the key ideas of a consistent utilitarian approach of sexual morality. However, it must paradoxically be noted that utilitarianism does not seem to be a major influence among theorists involved in the LGBT movement since the late 1960s. Instead, LGBT (...) theorists and activists tend to adopt a liberal perspective based on every individual’s fundamental rights. Does this mean that utilitarianism fails to capture some crucial aspirations among LGBT people? Though this might be the case, we will argue that John Stuart Mill’s version of utilitarianism should also be taken into consideration in order to support their legitimate claims more appropriately. Are gender and sexuality genetically determined, or do we construct and perform them? For too long, debates about gender and sexuality have swung between the idea that our identities are biologically fixed and the claim that they’re freely chosen or socially constructed. Philosopher of gender and sexuality Helga Varden offers a striking alternative. Drawing on Kant’s theory of human nature, she argues that gender and sexuality aren’t chosen or hardwired – they emerge from the inner texture of our conscious, embodied (...) experience of the world. The picture theory of disability shows how the irremediable impediment to daily living tasks or goals can be ‘pictured’, and how a linguistic analysis of that picture can be used to represent the experience of disability. Technically constituting a species of ‘relational approach’ due to its consideration of the interplay between an individual and their environment, the theory differs from other relational accounts by focusing on the nature of the experience rather than the function of the relationship. The main deviation (...) from other theories of disability is in the conceptual shift away from a ‘nounal’ interpretation of disability in which disability is that which is caused or embodied, to an ‘adverbial’ description in which disability is experienced as a personally irremediable impediment to daily living tasks or goals. This book is a feminist analysis of Greek myth and tragedy that reimagines the structures of Freudian theory. The objective of this analysis is political—by revealing the structures that undergird patriarchal oppression, feminist thinkers can work to transform these symbolic constellations through the work of sabotage, parody, and imagination. Jessica Elbert Decker attempts here to read Freudian theory through a wider lens of Ancient Greek culture, since our contemporary philosophical and social culture has inherited many of its symbolic structures (e.g., (...) patriarchy, binary thinking). The major argument of the book is that our Western philosophical, social, and symbolic systems are, as they were in the Ancient Greek world, suffused with a set of values that reflect one version of masculinity and androcentrism, and that those values are destructive to human beings as well as the non-human world, including other beings. -/- . Sexual orientation and how we might understand it is a topic that arouses significant controversy. Is sexual orientation a natural or social phenomenon? Are categories such as 'queer' and 'straight' essential to the human condition or dependent on contingent cultural practices? Whilst such questions have been considered from the perspectives of sociology and gender studies, they remain relatively underexplored from a philosophical standpoint. In this book, Matthew Andler breaks new ground examining the metaphysics of sexuality. Distinguishing sexual orientation and sexual (...) identity, he asks why only certain aspects of sexuality count as sexual orientations, arguing that sexual dispositions can only become sexual orientations in virtue of being related to heteropatriarchal kinship structures. He then turns to sexual identity, arguing that the categories 'queer' and 'straight' are grounded in the political function of sexuality cultures as resisting and/or entrenching heteropatriarchal kinship structures. Additionally, he critiques capitalist expropriations of queerness in pinkwashing. He also argues that trans-inclusive interpretations of sexuality categories serve everyone who seeks to build a life outside of the narrow provisions of heteropatriarchal kinship structures. Bio-heteronormative conceptions of the family have long reinforced a nuclear ideal of the family as a heterosexual marriage, with children who are the genetic progeny of that union. This ideal, however, has also long been resisted in light of recent social developments, exhibited through the increased incidence and acceptance of step-families, donor-conceived families, and so forth. Although to this end some might claim that the bio-heteronormative ideal is not necessary for a social unit to count as a family, a more (...) systematic conceptualization of the family—the kind of family that matters morally—is relatively underexplored in the philosophical literature. This paper makes a start at developing and defending an account of the family that is normatively attractive and in line with the growing prevalence of non-conventional families and methods of family-formation. Our account, which we call a constitutive-affirmative model of the family, takes the family to be constituted by an ongoing process of relevant affective and affirmative relations between the putative family members. Through the lens of feminist speech act theory, this paper argues that artificial intelligence romance systems objectify and subordinate nonvirtual women. AI romance systems treat their users as consumers, offering them relational invulnerability and control over their (usually feminized) digital romantic partner. This paper argues that, though the output of AI chatbots may not generally constitute speech, the framework offered by an AI romance system communicates an unjust perspective on intimate relationships. Through normalizing controlling one’s intimate partner, these systems operate (...) as speakers that rank women as non-player characters and license their oppression, which is unjust even in the absence of empirical harms. Understanding AI romance systems as speakers has implications for policymakers. First, this account helps close the so-called responsibility gap in the operation of an AI system. Second, it places these systems under the purview of institutions’ policies regarding hate speech, suggesting one avenue for arguing that these systems may violate extant policies. Finally, it provides support for the pursuit of empirical research into AI romance systems’ effects on users. (shrink)

The emphasis Malabou places on both the erasure and possible reappropriation of the clitoris, which she requalifies as an “organ of thought” (13), warrants considering broader questions concerning negativity, relationality, and power. We raise two related questions, which we further explore at the end of this review. First, what does Malabou's analysis of the negative and its relationship to thought and femininity imply about the ontological category of relationality in toto? If the relation between negativity and the feminine is central (...) to thought, as Malabou seems to suggest, then this implies that negativity also has a prominent role in structuring relations in general. Second, how can the clitoris be disassociated from the negative without being turned into a new “positive,” or into a symbol grounded on a too familiar logic of othering? Arguably, this is the most pressing question for feminist philosophy in an age when gender and sexuality are under constant scrutiny inside and outside of the academe. (shrink)

The PhD thesis explores the philosophy of sex and raises questions about sexuality and moral concerns through a Foucauldian Perspective. There is a discussion on basic concepts like power, knowledge, discourse, freedom and self. It focuses on establishing Foucault as a distinctive philosopher who sets morals as an agenda of alteration. There is an attempt not only to analyse but also to engage with Foucauldian methodology. This film is a 44-minute documentary film based around the stories of five eugenics survivor from the province of Alberta, Canada, made as part of the Living Archives on Eugenics in Western Canada project.

The philosophical framework of justice proposed by Nancy Fraser during the 1990s establishes two equally crucial dimensions of justice: redistribution, linked to the allocation of economic goods, and recognition, linked to the assignment of social status. This division makes it possible to distinguish between transformative strategies that intervene in the causes of social injustices and affirmative strategies that focus on their effects. However, the author’s treatment of her notion of “two-dimensional category”, which combines inequalities of redistribution and recognition, has limits (...) for thinking about the functioning of certain systems of social subordination and the situation of certain social groups. In this paper, I will use a queer-crip perspective to argue that both heterocissexism and ableism are two-dimensional categories, since they structure an unequal status system, but also sustain, define, and naturalize the capitalist mode of production and are functional to its distribution of economic goods. This critical review allows us to adapt the Fraserian framework to the current socio-political context. (shrink)

Aunque esta división permite distinguir entre estrategias transformadoras que intervienen en las causas de las injusticias sociales y estrategias afirmativas que se enfocan en sus efectos, el tratamiento que hace la autora de su noción de “categoría bidimensional”, la cual combina desigualdades de redistribución y de reconocimiento, posee límites para pensar (...) la situación de determinados grupos sociales. En este trabajo me serviré de una perspectiva queer-crip para sostener que tanto el heterocisexismo como el capacitismo son categorías bidimensionales, ya que no solo estructuran un sistema de estatus desigual, sino también sustentan, definen y naturalizan el modo de producción capitalista y son funcionales a su distribución de bienes económicos. Esta revisión crítica permite adaptar el marco fraseriano al contexto sociopolítico actual. (shrink)

The dynamic qualities of friendship sometimes require friends to assess their relationship in light of reasons of reciprocity or moral considerations. Friends sustain their relationship partly by assessing the terms of reciprocity. Sometimes friends must also consider how moral reasons bear on their friendship; friends need to resolve occasional clashes between the demands of friendship and rival moral considerations, and friends must sometimes serve as a moral stewards for each other. In “Friendship Amongst the Self-Sufficient: Epicurus” (this Journal, Vol. 2, No. 2, June 2001), Andrew Mitchell explores the Epicurean view of the relationship between self-sufficiency and friendship by contrasting it with the views of Aristotle and the Stoics. Epicurus, Aristotle, and the Stoics do indeed have interestingly different views on friendship that are well worth comparing. Yet Mitchell’s characterization of Aristotelian friendship is misleading, his account of Stoic friendship is inaccurate, and his interpretation of Epicurean friendship is curiously imaginative but (...) ultimately rather strange. C'est que chacune et chacun argumente à partir de sa chair même, de son expérience unique et intime d'être sexué. Les études de genre, initialement lutte salutaire pour la dignité des femmes, présupposent que le corps n'est qu'un construit. Elles l'éliminent comme donnée minimale de sens, le considérant comme infiniment plastique. Comme si le corps, au fond, n'était « rien » pour l'être humain. (...) Dédaignant d'opposer sexualités biologique, affective et sociale, cet ouvrage veut aller « à la chose même ». Et si féminin et masculin étaient des forces bien plus riches que leur simple expression sensible? Le masculin et le féminin nous traversent, nous dépassent et font notre humanité. Pour un monde en crise, chercher une harmonie entre ces deux pôles ne serait-il pas l'ultime vecteur de paix? (shrink)

In this essay, we aim to provide an overview of the political and philosophical issues pertaining to asexuality. The first section, “What Is Asexuality?,” offers an account of asexuality. The second section, “Asexuality as a Unique Sexual Orientation,” argues that asexuality should be understood as a unique sexual orientation. The third section, “Asexuality and Oppression,” discusses the various forms of oppression facing asexual persons today. The fourth section, “The Goods of Asexuality,” articulates some goods that asexuality brings to human lives, (...) and we do this with an eye toward conceiving of asexuality as something other than a mere deficit.
