Open WebUI is an open-source app that brings together access to different AI models from a single program. With Open WebUI, you can connect both artificial intelligences that you run directly on your PC and commercial models in the cloud, organizing all your conversations from a single environment without depending on external pages.

Connection with local artificial intelligences

If you want to keep your data completely private and work without an Internet connection, Open WebUI integrates natively with Ollama, the manager that makes it easy to download and run language models on your own computer, leveraging your PC's hardware to make private requests. The interface shows you the available resources and allows you to switch between the different installed engines using a drop-down menu very similar to the one on ChatGPT while ensuring that none of your requests leave your computer.

Cloud model integration via API

For tasks that require greater power or specific capabilities, Open WebUI allows you to link external services using their API keys. You can connect platforms like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, or Grok and use them from the same central dashboard. If you share the installation in an office or at home, Open WebUI has a complete administration panel where you can create independent accounts for different members of your team or family. As an administrator, you can assign specific permissions to define which exact models each person can use and set spending limits or usage quotas to control commercial API consumption. Additionally, it allows you to restrict response behavior based on the profile, for example by limiting the options so that the model functions solely as a study assistant for children's accounts.

My experience with Open WebUI

I installed Open WebUI on my PC to centralize my tests with different models. First, I connected it to Ollama and downloaded a lightweight Gemma model to test the chat completely offline and ensure the hardware was responding well. Then I entered my Claude and Gemini API keys and used the direct comparison function, where I sent the same request to a local model and an external model to see their responses side-by-side in the same window. Finally, I uploaded an extensive document on project regulations to the chat and asked it to extract the mandatory technical requirements, obtaining a precise list based on the file.

What I liked most about Open WebUI and what could be improved

· What I liked the most: the freedom to group local and commercial models in a single window, thus avoiding multiple tabs and eliminating dependence on fixed monthly subscriptions.

· What could be improved: the initial configuration is pretty extensive and somewhat complex, and the interface could be set up in a more intuitive way, either with a tutorial or better access to model settings.
