Oh boy am I late! Sorry guys, this one got out of control. I will try to go back to shorter stories and faster updates for this series. Better now than never: third on the 2013 Matchmaking Icon Meme:

AN: I am so cruel to Gilbert that I am starting to feel ashamed. Even Jun Mochizuki lets him catch a break more often than I do.

My sister is partly to blame for this: she was a lot more inspired by the pairing than I was, and we came up with the plot together. So consider it a team effort between Stingmon and I. Thank you sis: I would miss out on a lot of crazy ideas without you!

Anyhow: the story takes place during episode 19 of Digimon Adventure 02, “An Old Enemy Returns,” shortly after the Emperor goes into the Dark Whirlpool, and sometime after Gilbert contracts Raven in Pandora Hearts. There will be spoilers for the Emperor’s backstory (episode 23 of Digimon Adventure 02, “Genesis of Evil”) and the beginning of the Headhunter case (“Retrace XLV: Queen of Hurts”, volume 11 of Pandora Hearts).

Disclaimer: Pandora Hearts, written by Jun Mochizuki, belongs to Square Enix, and the Digimon franchise, originally created by Akiyoshi Hongou, belongs to Bandai. None of the characters are mine except the nameless servant.

AN:  My first thought when this one came out: “Great. These two are so going to empty Black Order’s pantry.” But then I started to wonder when the story should take place, and the ending result was more interesting than I expected. I think I actually ship them now. My sister does, at any rate. I’m kind of proud.

     No spoilers for Pandora Hearts (can’t believe it either) since this story takes place before the manga starts. Important spoilers for D.Gray-man, up to chapter 135: “Rest with Occasional Cloud” (volume 14). I’m afraid this story won’t make much sense unless you’ve read the latter.

I would like to thank my cousins for lending me their Professor Layton games. They are fun, challenging, have likable characters, beautiful landscapes and some gorgeous music, with interesting plots to boot. After finishing the first three games, I can see what all the fuss is about, and I can't wait to get my hands on the second trilogy!



That being said, I can't help but be puzzled by the relationship between Layton and his apprentice Luke. Why does the good professor keep bringing a child with him on potentially dangerous investigations? Where are this kid's parents? For that matter, isn't he a little... young to be an apprentice?

...get out, you menace.

Mandatory pedobear jokes aside, midway through The Diabolical Box, my sister and I had the following exchange on the subject:

Me: This is getting weird: every time Layton is about to introduce him, starting with "He is my...", Luke always interrupts and says: "I'm his apprentice!" What do you think Layton was about to say?

My sister: "He is my soul!"

Me: ...creepy.

My sister: Maybe Layton was dead all along. He is probably hiding a terrible head injury under his hat. That's why he never takes it off. He is actually a zombie and without Luke, he would turn to dust.

Me: Wait... so Luke is his necromancer?

My sister: Yeah! And that's why they have to stay together all the time. I bet Luke was a lonely orphan who tried to summon the ghost of a great detective because he wanted to become one when he grew up.

Me: But he ended up with an archeologist instead... So Layton offered to teach him everything he knew about puzzles and how to be a gentleman to make it up to Luke! And if anybody asks, Luke is his "apprentice," because "necromancer" doesn't have the same ring to it.

My sister: XD

Me: ...Actually, that would be a pretty awesome twist.

At the very least, it would give Luke and Maya great conversation topics in the Layton vs Ace Attorney crossover. As a necromancer and spirit medium respectively, they would have a lot to talk about. X)

Of course, this being a family-friendly game, I doubt this twist will actually happen, and the fourth game probably jossed the entire theory already. But still, it would explain quite a lot about the first trilogy:

Okay, okay, I don't believe any of this is true. Don't take this essay too seriously, I just thought it made for a good Halloween post.

Still. If I don't find at least one fanfiction about this, I will be very disappointed in the internet.

La nuit dernière, je suis allée au cinéma avec ma mère et, dans le hall d'entrée, me suis retrouvée nez à nez avec une affiche représentant Neku, Shiki, Beat et Rhyme assis côte à côte, l'air tendu.



Après m'être (un peu) remise du choc initial, j'en ai conclu que Square Enix avait sorti une adaptation cinématographique de The World Ends With You pendant que j'avais le dos tourné, et que, comme avec Madoka, la France était assez vernie pour avoir droit à une avant-première.

Joshua n'était pas sur l'affiche, mais de mon point de vue c'était plutôt bon signe: les producteurs ont dû comprendre qu'il y avait trop de choses à adapter en un seul film, et beaucoup plus de pognon à faire en sortant une trilogie. (En plus les trilogies sont en vogue.) Les gratte-ciel de Shibuya étaient plus rouges que dans mes souvenirs, mais c'était une méthode comme une autre de renforcer le côté théâtral.

La seule chose qui m'inquiétait vraiment, c'était le titre français, Le Pouvoir des 4, il fallait vraiment le faire exprès pour sortir un truc aussi ridicule. Je voulais bien reconnaître que le titre anglais était difficile à traduire, mais quitte à prendre un titre niais, autant traduire la version japonaise, Subarashiki Kono Sekai (littéralement, Le Monde est Beau), au moins avec le design de l'affiche l'ironie du titre aurait été évidente. De ce point de vue, il me fallait bien admettre que le titre français restait approprié: on ne peut pas dire que les premières tentatives de coopération des personnages dans le jeu aient eu des résultats brillants...

Ma mère et moi sommes entrées dans la salle en avance pour trouver les meilleures places, et je l'ai traînée de siège en siège à chaque fois que quelqu'un de plus grand que moi faisait mine de me cacher l'écran - avec le recul, j'admire sa patience. J'avais oublié jusqu'au film que j'étais venue voir, tout ce que je voulais, c'était regarder la bande-annonce de TWEWY. A la fin de la séquence de pub, il n'y avait toujours pas de bande-annonce, et je n'avais qu'une envie: me barrer du cinéma pour chercher toutes les infos disponibles sur Google.

J'ai fini par rassembler des parcelles de vidéo, pour m'apercevoir que des Pokémon et des créatures des studios Ghibli avaient leur rôle à jouer. Ce qui a été très loin de me décourager: ce film serait une daube cosmique ou la meilleure invention de ce monde depuis internet.

Et puis je me suis réveillée.

Mon premier réflexe a été d'allumer l'ordinateur et d'ouvrir le site officiel de TWEWY pour vérifier l'existence d'une adaptation en film. Il m'a fallu plusieurs minutes pour me rendre à l'évidence: étant donné que je venais de me réveiller, il y avait de fortes chances que l'adaptation en question n'ait été qu'un rêve. J'ai longtemps refusé de m'y faire, jusqu'à ce que je me rappelle qu'il y avait des Pokémon.

J'ai vérifié quand même. Evidemment, il n'y avait rien, et j'ai été à deux doigts d'écrire une lettre à Square Enix: ça fait presque un an que la version iOS de TWEWY a laissé entendre qu'une suite était en préparation et que Kingdom Hearts 3D a ouvert la possibilité d'un cross-over, combien de temps est-ce qu'on doit encore attendre?!

Mais ce n'est pas la peine; je sais exactement comment se déroulerait cette conversation:

When I went to the movies with my mother last night, in the lobby I came across a billing with Neku, Shiki, Beat and Rhyme sitting together and looking anxious.



Once I had (mostly) recovered from the initial shock and ensuing giddiness, I concluded that Square Enix had made a movie adaptation of The World Ends With You while I wasn't looking, and that, much like with Madoka, France was lucky enough to get a preview of the flick.

Joshua wasn't on the billing, but I took it as a good sign: the producers must have realized that there was too much material to adapt in a single movie and much more money to be made if they released it as a trilogy instead. Shibuya's skyscrapers in the background looked redder than I remembered them, but I figured the intent was to make the setting look more dramatic.

My main concern came from the French title, Le Pouvoir des 4, which literally means The Power of 4, and sounds as ridiculous in French as it does in English. I had to admit that the English title was pretty hard to translate, but if they wanted a cheesy title instead, they could have just taken the Japanese It's a Wonderful World, at least the eery billing would have made it obvious that the cheesiness was misleading. However, I reasoned, as ridiculous as it was, the French title was appropriately ironic considering what resulted of the characters' early attempts at teamwork in the game.

My mother and I went into the theatre early to look for the best seats; I moved seats every time someone taller than me blocked my view - in retrospect I really admire my mother's patience. I didn't even care about the movie I had originally come to see, I just wanted to see the TWEWY trailer. By the time the commercials ended and no trailer appeared, all I wanted to do was to bolt out of the theatre and google the movie to find as many info as the web would be willing to give.

Somehow I ended up with bits and pieces of videos showing that Pokemon and Studio Ghibli creatures made cameos. This didn't deter my excitement in any way: this movie was either going to be a ton of crap or the best thing since the internet.

Then I woke up.

My first reflex was to turn on the computer and check TWEWY's official site for information about the movie adaptation. It took me several minutes to realize that the fact that I just woke up was a pretty strong hint that said adaptation was nothing but a dream. I only came to terms with it after remembering the implication of Pokemon.

I still checked. Of course, there was nothing, and I had half a mind to write Square Enix a letter: it has almost been a year since the iOS version of TWEWY's sequel tease and Kingdom Hearts 3D's hint at a possible crossover, how much longer do we have to wait?!

There was no need to, because I know exactly how this conversation would go:

The English rant is over there.

J'ai décidé de donner une deuxième chance à Mirai Nikki (plus connu sous le nom de Journal du Futur).

La première fois que je l'ai essayé, j'étais plutôt enthousiaste: on m'avait beaucoup vanté ses qualités comme thriller psychologique surnaturel. Il se trouve que j'aime beaucoup les scénarios sur les "jeux mortels," et l'idée des journaux intimes capables de prédire l'avenir avait un sacré potentiel pour les combats stratégiques. J'ai aussi entendu beaucoup de bien de Yuno, la jolie psychopathe sinistre qui définit à elle seule la trope Yandere; j'étais curieuse.

Ce à quoi je m'attendais: un protagoniste auquel on puisse s'identifier, du suspense, un usage inventif des prédictions, des questions de morale, et surtout, une approche réfléchie de la psychologie humaine. A part quelques tours ingénieux avec les journaux du futur, j'ai été déçue sur tous les plans.

J'ai lâché le manga au chapitre 4, lorsqu'une détentrice de journal sort une moto de ses fesses (littéralement) pour s'enfuir. Ce genre de scène détruit toute forme de suspense: à partir de là, je savais que dès que ce personnage se retrouverait dans une situation critique, je me demanderais: "Pourquoi tu n'utilises pas encore la moto?"

La deuxième fois que je l'ai lu, c'était pour une raison autrement plus stupide: je venais de terminer le jeu The World Ends With You et je me baladais sur sa page des tvTropes parce que les personnages me manquaient. C'est là que j'ai entendu parler d'un certain Akise Aru, un personnage de Mirai Nikki que je n'avais pas encore rencontré, qui a pu fortement inspirer Joshua Kiriyu de TWEWY:



Satané Josh.

Effectivement, ces deux-là ont beaucoup de choses en commun, qu'il s'agisse du physique, de leur comportement ou même des paroles du thème musical d'Akise, Aru Shinjitsu no Uta (Song of a Certain Truth), qui collent étrangement bien à Joshua. (C'est une belle chanson, d'ailleurs. Vous pouvez la trouver sur youtube avec sous-titres anglais.) Dans les deux cas, les autres personnages ainsi que les lecteurs/joueurs s'interrogent tout au long de l'histoire sur leurs mobiles: à quel point ces gamins peuvent être dangereux, et sont-ils dignes de confiance.

Sur plusieurs points, Akise est même mieux développé que Joshua en tant que personnage: il est plus humain, et le conflit auquel il est confronté est plus visible. Ce qui est d'autant plus rageant qu'il est le seul personnage qui se tienne dans Mirai Nikki. (Et qu'il a des goûts très discutables en matière d'hommes, mais j'y reviendrai plus tard.)

Akise a beau voler la vedette en s'attirant l'empathie du lecteur avec ses motivations, son tempérament audacieux et ses nombreux talents (contrebalancés par des défauts et des faiblesses crédibles), il ne sauve pas le scénario pour autant. Au vu de la popularité de la série, je dois pourtant reconnaître ceci à l'auteur: félicitations Monsieur Sakae Esuno, votre stratégie fonctionne. Votre combinaison de gore, de fanservice et d'un ou deux personnages intéressants (si tant est que Yuno compte) vous a rendu riche!

Cela étant, ça ne suffit pas à faire une bonne histoire.


Franchement, je ne peux pas recommander Mirai Nikki. Aucune cohérence chez les personnages = aucun suspense = échec total pour un thriller psychologique surnaturel. Vous pouvez me servir des épisodes à la piscine et de jolies cinglées en train de découper des gens à coups de hache tant que vous voulez, s'il n'y a rien derrière, ça ne prend pas.

Si vous voulez lire les aventures de personnages crédibles coincés dans un jeu mortel avec des pouvoirs surnaturels (et du fanservice), regardez plutôt l'anime Mai HiME (évitez le manga, par contre), ou jouez à The World Ends With You sur Nintendo DS (malheureusement il n'existe pas de version française). Ils ont leur lot de défauts (surtout Mai HiME; TWEWY est génial), mais ils font au moins ça de bien.
