it's a new experience for them
Jul. 27th, 2024 04:44 pmI was very annoyed when my sliced Boar's Head deli ham didn't arrive with my grocery order yesterday - that was my lunch for next week! - and I was considering doing a supplementary Instacart order to replace it when I got a message from Stop and Shop saying it wasn't included because of the deli meat recall due to that listeria outbreak. I hadn't realized Boar's Head was part of that, so I guess now I know! But it means I have to figure out what the lunch plan is - probably grilled cheese, eggs, and toast. Exciting! (Not that the ham and cheese sandwiches are exciting either, but at least there's a plan in place so I don't have to think or make a decision.) I have some mozzarella sticks in the freezer, too, so that's an option. *hands*
In TV news, the 4th and final season of The Umbrella Academy is coming in a couple weeks (August 8th) and the 2nd season of Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power starts at the end of August, so that's something to look forward to. Did I love RoP? No. Did I find it entertaining enough to watch a second season? Yeah, and not just the nitpicking, though I admit that I enjoyed that sometimes too.

'cause we seem to understand the urgency
Jun. 26th, 2022 09:21 pmI'm dyeing my greys purple again so I figured I'd use the waiting time to post about s3 of Umbrella Academy, which I finished. I enjoyed it overall, though like the previous two seasons, it did have some uneven bits.
( spoilers )
So I'd probably rate it slightly better than season 1 but not as good as season 2.

nice little level stroke
Jun. 25th, 2022 06:03 pmI bought some strawberries and some blueberries and was planning to make ice cream with one and eat the other fresh, but then I thought, I could make vanilla ice cream and then make shakes with either and that seemed like a better idea, so that is what I did. I am drinking a blueberry shake right now made with homemade vanilla ice cream and fresh bluebs and it's very nice.
I spent the afternoon watching s3 of Umbrella Academy - I'm halfway through so no spoilers please! - and mostly my thoughts are very shallow, e.g., Diego looked good with his 1963 hair but he looks smoking hot with his new timeline hair. I also really like Fei's style and especially her glasses.
( spoilers )
I will probably finish it later - I have no control when it comes to wanting to know what happens next with a story, so I can never parcel it out to make it last, but that also makes it hard to discuss because I can't quite put everything in the order it happens.

I'm still without power at my brother's (since 2 pm on Tuesday!), so I am currently at my niece's house charging my devices, since I was down to under 30% even with going out to the car yesterday to charge my phone to 70%. But here is the post that I was writing on Tuesday when the power went out, just for posterity:
The dogs are sad today - they like me just fine, but I think they're missing their people. They've just stayed in my brother and sister-in-law's room all day, sleeping. It's fine that they're not rambunctious - it's not fit outside for them with tropical storm Isaias hitting us with buckets of rain (and some wind). Alyssa was supposed to come hang out today (properly socially distanced and outside) after work, but we rescheduled for Thursday thanks to the weather.
I like the occasional stormy day in the summer, and I'm also having a really good hair day, which is good because I have a couple of zoom calls today. *g* I'd forgotten to pack a hair brush - I keep a wide-tooth comb in my overnight bag, but I switched to the bigger duffel bag because I'm here for a week, and since I normally don't wash my hair when I stay somewhere one or two nights, I didn't think to slip the brush in. I ordered one from Amazon to ship here, and it arrived yesterday, so I washed my hair last night (I do think the chlorine is fading my purple streaks) and I used the Garnier honey conditioner and I really like how it smells and how soft my hair is. I might need to get some of that for home.
In other news, one of the things that struck me about the similarities - and differences - in how Umbrella Academy handled a particular plot point versus how Legends of Tomorrow did, and now I will cut for spoilers ( spoilers for all episodes of both shows plus some 12 Monkeys spoilers as well )
None of these thoughts really amount to anything, but it's interesting to me how such similar things can be used to tell such different stories.

i think we're alone now
Aug. 3rd, 2020 09:45 amY'all, this weekend, I just blitzed through two seasons of Umbrella Academy and I don't know what I think? I mean, I do think it never quite fulfilled the promise of the "I Think We're Alone Now" montage in the very first episode, and I think Kate Walsh is, as ever, AMAZING. But I also feel like Luther could go away forever 99% of the time, but 1% of the time he's all right. Somehow Diego is my favorite? (I say somehow, but I guess subpar Batman is still Batman? Idk. I just understood where he was coming from most of the time even when I didn't agree with him.) I mean, he was my fave in season 1 and in season 2 he just got so much more to do and play. And I thought I would dislike Klaus forever but now I'm fond of him while still being annoyed? Which is I think the point of the character? And I wish Allison and Vanya got more of a chance to learn how to be sisters? They were trying in season 1 until everything went pear-shaped, and then they didn't get a chance to try much in season 2, though again the beauty parlor montage was fun.
I also wish they'd given Allison even more in season 2, given the givens, because I think the actress did well with what they gave her and her storyline was the meatiest and also, the most relevant. And her husband was great! Five is an asshole and probably down there with Luther as my least fave (of the kids; lbr, Reginald Hargreeves is the utter worst and I really hope the show never tries to soften that or validate his terrible parenting), but the actor is knocking it out of the park considering his particular circumstances. Lastly, I think they only used one song by Mary J Blige, which seems like a crime, but she was great as Cha-Cha.
I do wish that the women's storylines didn't revolve so much around their love lives, and I hope Vanya gets some different notes to play (er, pun not intended) if there's a season 3. I was also unhappy with how the women of color were treated, especially since ( spoilers )
I think in terms of shows about time travel, I didn't like this as much as Legends of Tomorrow, Timeless, or 12 Monkeys but lbr, 12 Monkeys is like the gold standard of time travel done well and the others are playing with the idea but not really using it as rigorously.
And Umbrella Academy is quirky, but I just watched LoT, so it doesn't reach quite the wackiness of, say, Beebo, or Mr. Parker's Cul-de-Sac, though I feel like it could. I think it needs to lean harder into that comic book quirk, rather than the Wes Anderson quirk it sometimes feels like it's going for. I mean, they have a chimp butler, for crying out loud! It needs more of that and fewer ironic needle drops (yes, even I got a little tired of them by the middle of the second season, though for the most part, I thought they were fun). Or maybe songs that haven't been used elsewhere (and better) first on occasion. IJS.
( more thematic than plot spoilers, but I do talk about plot )
Are the comics worth reading?
So yeah, that was a thing this weekend. I already warned my brother his Netflix recommendations may be a little skewed after this week. *g*
