As I was riding to the secret mailbox, my bike just... called it a day. Switched itself off. I pushed it home (2 kms, not a lot of fun).
Turns out it was the ignition lock. That's been sort of half broken for a long time and apparently it had now decided that enough was enough. 30 euros buys me a completely new one, from a German seller on Ebay. 👍

Sweet! I'm glad it was an easy repair, but dang, that's a long way home!

Well the repair was easy, except for removing the old lock. Which is something that makes sense without even thinking very hard about it.

There's no description in any manual, and none on the Web that we've found.

It's held in with what turned out to be two bolts, let deep into recesses in the lock casing. AND THEY HAVE NO SLOT, CROSSHEAD, TORX, HEX, ANYTHING. There's just a little cylindrical stump in the centre, apparently used to put them in using a special tool, then cut off.

Fortunately we have quite a selection of tools, and the combined application of a Powerfile, a cold chisel and a NutBuster allowed the bolts to be undone. Then it was just undoing the steering stem nut, lifting the handlebars a bit and wiggling the lock out and the new one in. And "Reverse these steps to reassemble."

The wiring was also a bit of a challenge, but that was partly because the front blinkers had been replaced so there were some differently-coloured wires around. But, Honda, when you have four wires coming out of the ignition switch, and three of them go into a four-position connector block with the fourth position left empty, and the fourth wire needs to be connected to a single separate wire right next to that connector block, why the sodding *bleep* don't you run all four wires through that connector? Oh yeah, because Honda, and probably Friday afternoon and the end-of-week sake, and oh, we still have to do the ignition switch wiring. Grmph.

I'm glad for you that it isn't a car! More easily fixed and less expensive to own and operate. Also, a car would have been a lot harder to push that distance! ;-)
