An exploration of female sexuality through a sex-positive lens is always welcome, especially when it centers on a mature woman. Exploring desire and power dynamics always intrigues me. My issue with Babygirl is the same one I have with other contemporary “hot” films (Challengers, Saltburn, etc.), it’s their striking lack of sex appeal. Harris Dickinson dancing to Father Figure felt promising but somehow ended up landing as cringe. The 21st century might just be the sexless era, A24 hasn’t surrendered to that fact yet.
