The ultimate paean to Jewish striving. I'm still kind of coming down from the madcap high of Marty Supreme. A Bernard Malamud novel's worth of characters refracted through tropes of the heist, the sports, and coming of age films -- sped up at 78 RPM.

Marty Supreme puts the attraction and danger and seduction of the American dream at its center along with its benefits and soul crushing defeats.

In age of rising anti-semitism, to put our very specific culture…

This was the first David Lynch feature I ever saw. I tracked it down on VHS sometime after the fateful Season 2 finale of "Twin Peaks" -- needing, craving more of that weird wonderful world he had brought to life.

For those reasons, and a lot more, "Wild at Heart" will always be a sentimental favorite. I find this to be among the most optimistic of Lynch's work ("Twin Peaks" being the most?). It's the most classic "comedy" in the…

Live by the gun, die by the gun - even if you’ve convinced yourself it’s for a cause. It’s easy to see how whole societies spiraled into this sort of inhumanity. The fact that this takes place on the last day of WWII just shows that the war continues when we choose violence over love.

One of the more beautiful films I’ve seen - particularly in showing how love can recolor a bombed out city or dingy hotel.

A masterpiece! Movies!!!

“The Batman Epic Crime Saga” goes well beyond homage and inspiration. It’s not in conversation with prior works - it’s pure plagiarism.

Let’s be real. “The Penguin” is nothing more than a mechanical rip-off of the Sopranos. The performances, the story beats, the sets (particularly the mother’s house) are literally a slavish recreation of David Chase’s work with a slight Batman patina.

What is the point of this entire project?

Why make a Batman movie where the Riddler is nothing…

One of the dullest films I’ve seen in some time. What am I missing? A lot of people love the book, and the movie is clearly resonating with mass audiences. I had to fight dozing off multiple times.

While this is technically well made, literally nothing happens for long stretches of the film, save for conversations with Gosling and his weird Rocky alien friend.

Despite all the discussion about how this film is a tribute to the human spirit -…
