First, for anyone who enjoys photography of things like mountain climbing check out the interview with National Geographic expedition photographer Gordon Wiltse. The explanations of how he gets the shots may be even more impressive than the pictures.

And second, pop culture in the spotlight again, this time the influence of Japanese media (anime, manga, video games) on youth culture. Nothing new here (other than the size of studio ghibli and the decline of manga on Japanese trains in the past decade) but it's always interesting to see what folks who aren't into a given area of pop culture and fannish make of it when they take a closer look.

Minnesota Public Radio just got it's (relatively) newly acquired third channel up and running today. It's eclectic music, heavy on various flavors of rock but with other things as well, on 89.3 in the Twin Cities. Several familiar voices from some earlier alt music stations plus a couple of new folks. The have a webcast if you are interested or just feeling bored with other options.

But not today.

This one, an interview with the post-punk band "Yeah, Yeah,Yeah" and the lead singer's parents had me collapsed in giggles at work.

Also worth some amusement is the one on Anne Rice's Moving sale.

Another interesting one about symphonic concert notes on PDAs.

And on the basis of this interview (the local morning call-in show is one of the few ones I've ever run into that only seldom hits my embarasment squick of idiotic callers), I've added yet another book to my list of things to read eventually, Bruce Schneier's "Beyond Fear:Thinking Sensibly about Security in an Uncertain World." I liked his very rational and wide ranging approach to thinking about security issues.

And a couple of fun links to NPR.

First on Alan Moore on The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. This has both web only stuff and the sound to the interview.

On a more serious note this is the link to NPR's bit on the "Argentine Capital Moves to Sanction Gay Unions"<http://discover.npr.org/rundowns/segment.jhtml?wfid=1337951>

And somewhere in between is the bit on <http://discover.npr.org/rundowns/segment.jhtml?wfid=1337949> .

Does anyone ever listen to these? Oh, well. I thought this one was worth sharing. The part at the beginning reminds me a bit of finding the right piece of music for a vid.

From tonight's All Thing's Considered
The Man Behind the Music of the Movies
NPR's Michele Norris profiles Hollywood music supervisor Chris Douridas. Douridas has picked music for American Beauty, Shrek and Sex and the City, and is responsible for the "shagadelic" sound of the first Austin Powers movie.

A short, not-quite-as-serious-as-I'd-like-but-not-too-bad audio article from National Public Radio's All Things Considered

I spend most of my day at work either listening to the radio (mostly some form or another of Minnesota Public Radio) or music. Over the last couple of days MPR has had a couple of bits that seem to intersect the fringes of my thoughts and wishes regarding fandom. I'm afraid there are no transcripts only real audio files.

One, from the show segment http://news.mpr.org/programs/futuretense/ about Musiclink going non-Profit. I like the concept of Musiclink, which provides what is basically a pay pal-like connection between musicians and fans, but unfortunately I don't think it's a paradigm that will ultimately succeed. While I do have issues with some aspects of the current theory of intellectual property, seeing folks get paid for what they have created is not one of them. Or rather it is. I'm for it.

The other one that caught me was Kurt Anderson speaking on the nature of the amateur spirit which made me think of much of what I like about fandom and about much of what I miss in fandom's source material.
