The base for our Welsh holiday was a splendid farmhouse so big, comfortable and well-appointed that five of us had more than enough space. Physically and socially. There was equipment we don't even have at home - microwave, TVs, dishwasher, drinks fridge - massive quantities of cookware, basic foodstuffs, games, toiletries, books & DVDs. And then there were the views from the front garden...

One of our days in Wales included a trip to the seaside. My brother and I had been to Aberystwyth before as children, but it was a first for abrinsky and for my niece and nephew.

Though bright, it was chilly and windy, certainly not a day for paddling.

Sitting on a bench on the seafront, eating our packed lunches and admiring the prettily painted houses, we felt as though we were in the 1970s. Or the 1950s. Or any time that wasn't the 21st century, really.

After an entire childhood of being dragged around Wales, I vowed I would never take another holiday there. Then, enticed by an enthusiastic tweet, we watched Hinterland earlier this year. And a rainy, wet Aberyswyth, full of murder and repression, appealed so much that we were inspired to book a holiday after all. This building was the police station in Hinterland. We spent a while idly fantasising about buying it (because it's cool, not because of the TV connection).

On the way back to the car we turned a corner and were suddenly staring at this impressive building.

One of the things we learned on this holiday is that children are not enthusiastic about spending hours poking around a town and photographing its interesting buildings. It was a strange experience to visit somewhere for little longer than the time it took to drive there.

I have a cold. I've had A Week, too many people, more building work, and very little sleep. B22 is all I can manage.

After the amazing red kite experience, there was still time to fit in a short walk around (part of) the Elan Valley Reservoir. Cold, windswept, picturesque.

I'm back! I think I'm back. I only went away physically for a week, but I seem to have had an unplanned mental holiday. My holiday was busy with doing things, and I've lots of photos to edit and process before sharing with the world.

My week away from home was spent staying in a remote farmhouse in Wales. Not too far from the farmhouse is the Gigrin Farm Red Kite Feeding & Rehabilitation Centre, so that was somewhere we had to visit. The kites are fed at the same time every day, and the number of them visiting varies according to the weather. In bad winter conditions there can be as many as 600 birds feeding in the course of an hour; we estimate we may have seen as many as 200.

The food is very lean beef, fit for human consumption.

Visitors - the human kind - sit in hides, watching and waiting for the kites to appear.

A sky full of red kites - that in itself is breathtaking. And then, once the crows have declared it safe, they begin to swoop.

edited highlights (no, really, I started off with 300 images) )

I do recommend clicking through to Flickr and looking at the large version of some of those images. Some of them are not as good as I'd like, but others are quite impressive. And truthfully, all of them are pretty good given the limitations of the light levels, not using a tripod, and having limited zoominess.

Builth Wells is appealing

Rambling

This morning we went for a walk down the lane, listening to buzzards and watching clouds. This afternoon the rest of our party needed to do some supermarket shopping, so we got a lift into town and wandered while they shopped.

In between, there was some playing of Minecraft (not me) and some therapeutic doodling (me).

And now? Now there is delicious home-cooked food and wine.
