Stolen from [profile] xo_kizzy_xo - a brilliant warm up to the readathon tomorrow :)

1. What was the last book you read completely?
Bitten by Kelley Armstrong. Just finished that last night.

2. How often do you read?
At least a little every day. I can't remember when I last went through a day not reading at ALL, but it might not be more than a few pages before going to sleep. I haven't been reading as much lately as I usually do (mostly due to not commuting, so my 1hr reading time a day has been exchanged for other things), but still manage to get some in every day.

3. What is your favourite genre to read?
Probably fantasy, although it varies. I also LOVE travelogues.

4. What is your favourite book of all time?
I can maybe boil it down to my favourite book of this year, or a top ten of all time, but my FAVOURITE book of all time? Nope, not gonna happen.

5. What is your least favourite book of all time?
Again, I couldn't pick just one. I have several I have rated 1 star or less on goodreads, but I've disliked them for different reasons, so couldn't say which one is my _least_ least favourite. Besides, I'd feel like it ought to be one that was decidedly a BAD novel and not just one that wasn't to my taste.

6. Who is your favourite author?
It changes constantly, but currently I tend to pick up everything Audrey Faye has written, as soon as it's out. Other much-loved authors include Tamora Pierce, Mira Grant/Seanan McGuire, TJ. Klune, Stephen King, Nora Roberts and Neta Jackson

7. What author is overhyped?
E.L. James.

8. Do you prefer audio, physical, or an e-reader?
They all have their uses and I'd hate to have to do without any of them, but all else being equal, I do prefer physical books.

9. Hardback or paperback?
Don't care. I'm not a fan of the HUGE hardbacks or the tiny paperback though. But anything inbetween :D

10. Bookmarks or dogears?
Bookmarks!!! If you dog-ear my book, I'll never loan you another one X-D Do whatever you want with your own books, but don't dog-ear mine.

... although usually I just use scraps of paper or whatever random thing I have lying around.

11. Where is your favourite place to read?
Summertime: in my hammock in the garden :-D
All year around: Our still-sorta-new comfy chair. It's a chair worthy of the name :-D

12. How do you arrange your books on your shelves?
Non-fiction by topic and then by author (not quite by the Dewey decimal system though ;) ). Fiction by author and then by title (although books in a series go together).

13. What is the longest book you ever read?
A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth. A whooping 1474 pages!!! Not really worth it, but I don't regret spending my time on it either.

14. How many books do you want to read in 2020?
I set my goal for 140 at the beginning of the year... and then Corona happened, and my reading habits went out the window :-P Right now I think I'll be happy to just make it to 120.

15. How many books have you read so far in 2020?
Bitten was no. 33 :-)

Shamelessly stolen from [livejournal.com profile] icepearls :)

1. How do you keep track of your TBR list?
Mostly Goodreads :) However, I do keep my TBR separated from the rest of my books. All read books are in the library, whereas my TBR books are on a separate bookcase in the bedroom. That way I always have those books readily available when I want to read in bed, and I don't end up having people ask "Oh, what's that book like? Can I borrow it?" and then have to admit that I actually haven't read it, so wouldn't have a clue ;)

2. Are your TBR books mostly e-books or print?
Mostly print. In fact, I don't actually count e-books when counting TBR-books unless I've bought them myself (rather than downloaded them for free) or requested them from Netgalley.

3. How do you decide which book to read next?
I see where my mood takes me. I've stopped doing specific reading challenges, as I've found it doesn't work to decide ahead of time. So I'll usually just decide ahead of time whether I want to read a new book or pick up an old favourite, and then go look at the corresponding bookcases (or Goodreads shelf if I'm feeling lazy) until I find something that catches my fancy.

4. Which book has been on your TBR the longest?
This is where Goodreads comes in very handy! I joined in 2007 and there are about 30 books I entered back then and still haven't read. Out of those I think it's probably "Firebird" by Natasha Templeton which I've owned since 1996, but that's just a best guess - I don't know for sure.

5. The Newest Addition to your TBR
The Girl You Left Behind and The Last Letter from Your Lover, both by Jojo Moyes. They were birthday presents from my bible study group. They know me well :)

6. A book from your TBR list that's only there because of the cover?
None. I don't buy books just because of the cover. I may choose a specific edition because of the cover, or look closer into a book because of the cover, but if the back blurb doesn't interest me, I don't purchase it.

7. A book from your TBR list you don't intend to read?
I have a couple of these... Friends often pass books on to me if they don't want them any longer, as they know I don't like seeing books being thrown out ;) There are definitely some among there that I don't see myself ever reading.

However, if I was to pick between the books I've chosen myself, but just no longer think looks interesting at all... "The Officer's Daughter" by Zina Rohan. It sounded fascinating, but Henni read it awhile back and because of her review I immediate knew it wasn't something for me. I still have it, but it'll probably be passed on to a second-hand bookshop at some point.

8. A book that hasn't yet been published that you're looking forward to read.
"Rewind" by Mira Grant - a new stand-alone novel in the Newsflesh series. I LOVED that series, so I can't wait! It's not due out until 2016 though.

9. A book everybody has read but you?
"Gone Girl" by by Gillian Flynn. It seems like everybody and his uncle has read that one.

10. A book everybody keeps recommending to you.
Can't think of any, to be honest. At the moment I seem to be recommending books to others more often than the other way around.

11. A book on your TBR-list that you're really looking forward to?
Whichever book I've purchased most recently!! ;) No seriously, it changes constantly depending on my mood, so I couldn't say.

12. The number of books on your TBR-list
181 books according to my Goodreads list. That's only physical books though. Then I have 2 Netgalleys (although I'm currently reading one of them, so guess that one shouldn't count) and 3 or 4 purchased ebooks.

Hi all!

After a brief hiatus, I'm starting up the Pick-For-Me Challenge again :)

To sign up, post a comment with a link to your To-Be-Read list (be it on Goodreads, in a blog post, a google document... whatever! as long as it's publicly available). On January 25th I will close the sign-ups and assign a buddy for everybody.

Each person has until February 1st to pick 2 books (main choice + backup) from their buddy's TBR-list that they want them to read for the month of February.

End of February we'll return and talk about the books we've read.

I hope you'll want to play along! :-)

Feel free to spread the word on your own blogs - the more, the merrier :)

(PS: If you'd like to join, but have a busy February ahead of you - no worries, I'll post a March edition of the challenge come February 20th).
kiwiria: (Books: Girl with book)
The last 4 months I've been part of a "Pick-For-Me" Challenge on Goodreads. The way it works is that you get assigned a buddy and then pick books from the other's "to-read" shelf that you think the other should read that month (plus a back-up book if the first choice is unobtainable for some reason). It's been great fun, and a huge success as well, as people tend to choose books they themselves have loved and therefore the hit-rate is generally really good :)

Anyway, I figured it would be fun to expand on it and have a cross-over challenge here. With so many avid readers on my flist I hope we could have a fun little group :) You don't have to have a Goodreads account - a "to-be-read" list anywhere would do the trick (Google docs, blog post, LibraryThing, whatever... as long as it's public).

Anybody interested?

Feel free to spread it around on your LJ as well - the more, the merrier! :)

01 - A book series you wish had gone on longer OR a book series you wish would just freaking end already (or both!)
A series I wish had gone on longer: The Yada Yada Prayer Group by Neta Jackson. I've just reread the series, and it's SO GOOD! Thankfully there are two spin-off series which while not quite as good, still fill the void.
A series I wish would just end already: I don't particularly want Outlander by Diana Gabaldon to end, because it's really excellent, but I'd like to know that she has at least planned an end, so that it doesn't just continue indefinitely.

02 - A book or series you wish more people were reading and talking about
I know this is practically a given by now, but The Yada Yada Prayer Group ;)

03 - The best book you've read in the last 12 months:
Liveship Traders by Robin Hobb. I know it's technically a trilogy, but I'm going to count it as one, as it really should be read as such.

04 - Your favorite book or series ever
Sorry, I can narrow it down to a Top Ten, but that's it.

05 - A book or series you hate
Fifty Shades of Grey filled me with so much rage that it wasn't even funny. How that crap ever got published (let alone turned into a movie!!!) I'll never understand.

06 - Favorite book of your favorite series OR your favorite book of all time
I refer you to question 04.

07 - Least favorite plot device employed by way too many books you actually enjoyed otherwise
There are several... the deux ex machina, the cliff-hanger ending and the "turns out she's really schitzofrenic and did all these weird things by herself!".

08 - A book everyone should read at least once
The Bible... or at least the Gospels.

09 - Best scene ever
Pass.

10 - A book you thought you wouldn't like but ended up loving
Can't think of any. I don't think I've ever started a book anticipating I wouldn't like it, and if I did (e.g. required reading for school), I was usually spot on.

11 - A book that disappointed you
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The only HP book I don't see myself ever rereading again.

12 - A book or series of books you've read more than five times
Wow, where to I begin... Narnia, Little House, Anne of Green Gables, Dystopia, Alanna... pretty much all my childhood favourites.

13 - Favorite childhood book OR current favorite YA book (or both!)
Any of the ones listed above.

14 - Favorite character in a book (of any sex or gender)
Pass... I don't tend to have favourite characters.

15 - Your "comfort" book
Again, I can only narrow it down to this top ten.

16 - Favorite poem or collection of poetry
I'm not that much into poetry, but I rather like some of L.M. Montgomery's poems and some of Bub Bridger's poems.

17 - Favorite story or collection of stories (short stories, novellas, novelettes, etc.)
I'm not that much into short stories either - I prefer full-length novels, but L.M. Montgomery and Dennis Jürgensen have written some not-bad ones.

18 - Favorite beginning scene in a book
The first scene of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. It's just so... British!

19 - Favorite book cover (bonus points for posting an image!)
Another top ten!.

20 - Favorite kiss
Pass.

21 - Favorite romantic/sexual relationship
Jamie and Claire in Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.

22 - Favorite non-sexual relationship
Harry and Hermione.

23 - Most annoying character ever
PROFESSOR UMBRIDGE!!! She ruined HPOotP for me.

24 - Best quote from a novel
Another top ten!

25 - Any five books from your "to be read" stack
Stack? More like bookcase!
Somebody Else's Kids by Torey Hayden
Xenocide by Orson Scott Card
Border Wedding by Amanda Scott
Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner
The Tenth Chamber by Glenn Cooper

26 - OMG WTF? OR most irritating/awful/annoying book ending
A toss-up between Thr3e by Ted Dekker and The Partner by John Grisham.

27 - If a book contains ______, you will always read it (and a book or books that contain it)!
Dystopian/post-apocalyptic elements - Life as we Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer.

Day 28 - First favorite book or series obsession
Luri-Turi by Gunnel Linde. My sisters and I asked my parents to read this so often that they had to place a "must read at least one other book between rereadings" restriction on it.

I haven't read it in decades! Wonder if it still holds.

29 - Saddest character death OR best/most satisfying character death (or both!)
Cut for spoilers )

30 - What book are you reading right now?
Where She Went by Gayle Forman
The Boy in the Suitcase by Lene Kaaberbøl
