Dear Yuletide Writer,

Thank you for writing for me! I did write a few things in the optional details in the sign-up, but here are a few more details on my general likes/dislikes.

Likes: fluff, gen, het, slash, femslash, porn...I'm easy. ;) I seem to have a thing for characters who make bad decisions for good reasons or in the name of love and end up having to fight their dark side. I like AUs, especially "what if" ones where some different choice is made and how that changes things, not so much taking the characters and transplanting them in a world where they're virtually unrecognizable. Hurt/comfort, angst, snark, awesome ladies being awesome, all good. I also have a thing for vampires and tormented half-demons.

Dislikes: Animal cruelty, demonizing female characters, A/B/O.

I hope that's enough to help generate some ideas. And thank you again for writing for me!

Tarot Decks

So in a random fit of organization I decided to make a list of all my tarot decks.

Tarot Decks )
kajivar: (Raven)
Day 8

In your own space, talk about setting yourself a fannish goal. Big or small, it doesn't matter. Some examples: complete a bingo, sign up for a Big Bang, write that fic you've been thinking about for years, podfic that story that you love, make a fanmix for your fandom, post that bit of meta or reclist you keep putting off. Maybe resolve to be better at leaving feedback or answering comments.

Complete my first big bang, which happens to be [community profile] comics_bb, and involves writing in a fandom I've never written in before, so eeeeeek. It's crossing over Raven of the Teen Titans with the Avengers movieverse. It's the latter part which terrifies me. ;)
kajivar: (Astronomy // Milky Way)
Day 7

In your own space, share something non-fannish about yourself. A passion or a hobby or a talent, something that people might not know about you. We are more than just our fandoms. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I could babble on with this for ages. I'm a huge history and astronomy geek. One day I'm going to get hit by a car by stopping in the middle of the road to look up at the stars, I swear. Also, I have to frequently be gagged when seeing a historical drama movie because I'll be yelling stuff like "STIRRUPS? What are they doing with stirrups! Those aren't in use yet in this era!" or "WTF how can they imply that Isabella of France is pregnant with William Wallace's child? They never met, and her son was born seven years after Wallace died and she was NINE when he died to boot!" Fortunately eventually I can usually manage to turn my brain off and relax and enjoy the pretty. ;)
kajivar: (Writing // Hand & Pen)
Day 6

In your own space, pimp three comms or challenges and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Well, this is going to be hard since I've been off LJ/DW for quite some time, and not involved with comms like I used to be. So I may have to cheat.

1. [community profile] yuletide: because it gives love to smaller fandoms and has such a wide following that it exposes people to all sorts of new writers.

2. fuckyeahcharacterdevelopment @ tumblr: interesting and thought-provoking posts on how to bring your characters alive.

3. writeworld @ tumbrl: great prompts and advice.
kajivar: (Crow)
Day 5

Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or consume different fanworks. Give that new fandom a go. Listen to a podfic or watch some vids if you haven’t before. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

I signed up for [community profile] comics_bb to write Avengers fic (crossed over with DC), does that count?
kajivar: (Flowers // Roses (Black Baccara))
Day 4
In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

Huh, this is hard!

1. Raven (of the Teen Titans) fic, but not the animated Raven, the comics Raven (they're very different). You can find a lot of the former, but I want the latter.

2. More feedback on my fics (starting to archive them here but it's still in progress).

3. Fannish for my own stuff, and a huge desire to commission one day since it's a big project, but a set of custom tarot cards for my novel-in-progress. I can dream. ;)
kajivar: (Absinthe)
Day 2
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

I...have only the vaguest ideas as to what pairings are very rare, actually, or creators who are new, to be honest. I just hang out on the fringes of fandom. ;)

1. The Soul Cages, written for me by Annariel for Yuletide 2012. It's a future post-apocalyptic Bram Stoker's Dracula/Ladyhawke crossover.

2. tell them I ain't coming back by betternovembers -- I normally don't like RPF but it's a Women's soccer/Firefly AU. Really!

3. Fragile Flowers by notalwaysweak -- Black Jewels fic (and be warned it has the usual darkness of that series), a great story about Karla and an OFC.

Day 3
Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

Hahahaha no.
kajivar: (Writing // Pen on Paper)
So I'm giving the [community profile] snowflake_challenge a whirl. Because I'm a special snowflake and all. ;)

Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. My most recent fic, Though he's far away (I'll find my love someday) (Snow White and the Huntsmen), written for Yuletide. I wanted to do more with it but ran out of time.

2. One of my many Charmed fix-it fics, Long Live the Queen. Before the Charmed Ones can vanquish Cole/The Source, it jumps into his and Phoebe's baby.

3. Another Charmed fic, this one is my most popular going by the hits on ff.net. Remuneration, in which Cole and Chris meet in limbo.
kajivar: (Writing // Hand & Pen)
Dear Yuletide Author,

Thank you for signing up! I took a break from Yuletide for a few years, and I'm excited to come back and thrilled you're going to be writing a story for me! I'm really bad at these letters, but hopefully this will be a little helpful.

kajivar: (Pagan // Daughter of the Goddess)
  • Eat healthier. I can go for days without a real serving of veggies or fruits. Want to get at least three a day and work my way up to more.
  • Cook! I was at my healthiest (before I blew out my knees) when I was actually cooking dinner for myself and not eating something from a box tossed into the microwave.
  • Exercise. My apartment complex has a little gym. Three times a week, half an hour to start? I can't do the treadmill due to my knees, but I can do the bikes or elliptical machines.
  • Downsize. I have 25 of those big ass plastic totes filled with fabric and old costumes. Need to go through, salvage the good stuff (like velvet), and toss the rest. Also, I have a bunch of boxes I haven't unpacked since I moved here. Do I really need it?
  • Same with my closet. I have clothes I haven't worn for months. Go through and pull the stuff I don't wear and donate it if in good condition, toss it if not.
  • Be better organized. Sometimes my OCD gets lazy. Shred old paperwork and file away what I need to keep.
  • Think before I type. I tend to blurt things out at times when I think I'm being funny. Not everyone shares my sense of humor and I don't want to look stupid.
  • Be less insecure. SIGH. I need to get off my ass and find a therapist in this area. I am just so certain I won't find one as great as Mechelle was that I haven't bothered to try.
  • Same as above with regards to rage. Don't read the comments. Breathe. Don't let the bigots and idiots get me down.
  • Get back into writing. Original fic has been so neglected, and I haven't been happy with the state of my RP. I need to get around this block and put it to bed.
  • Make doctor's appointments for the various checkups I've been putting off. OB/GYN especially. I'm overdue for a mammogram (*cries*). Suck it up and see if there's something I can do to deal with the fibromyalgia.
  • Post more here. Which means I should probably direct my mama here so she can follow along. :)
  • Not end the world. What?

Book Drive

Jan. 12th, 2011 10:40 pm
kajivar: (Books // Open)
A friend has lost everything, including an extensive library, in the Queensland floods in Australia.

A book drive is being organized to help her replace as many as the books as we can. She's having other needs (for herself and her kitties) taken care of at the moment, but her books meant a lot to her.

I know I have a lot of book lovers on my flist, so if you have some you were considering getting rid of, or if you know where you can pick up some used books and are willing to donate them, please check out the link and see if you can find any on her list.
kajivar: (Eleanor of Aquitaine)
This day is called the Feast of Crispian:
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a-tiptoe when the day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall see this day and live t'old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say "To-morrow is Saint Crispian":
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars
And say "These wounds I had on Crispin's day."
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember with advantages
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words
Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester,
Be in their flowing cups freshly remembered.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now abed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

For those who don't know:

Some people have affiliate codes for Amazon and other similar sites. This means when they link to an item on Amazon, if you buy it, they get a tiny portion of the cost. I don't believe it's much, but it can put a little change in your pocket.

So LJ has decided this is cool for THEM, so they've added a script to their code that adds their affiliate code to Amazon/eBay/etc links you post, so THEY get the reward. It won't strip your affiliate code if you happen to have one (supposedly), but it will check all your outbound links and tack on their affiliate code so they can profit. So if you've noticed "outboundlink.me" running on your LJ pages, that's what that is. (Please note their first run of this fucked things up and stripped users' affiliate codes AND messed up all sorts of links, and their latest update has apparently screwed up people's ability to ctrl-click to open a link in a new tab.)

If you're like me and run Firefox and NoScript (so much safer than Internet Explorer), then you may have noticed that the script is completely screwing with all links. If you click, they don't do anything. You have to right click | open in new tab, or if you click several times in a row, the link will eventually open.

There's a better explanation here (and here), but the jist is if you don't want LJ hijacking your links and redirecting them, you should do this:

* go to the admin console
* enter "set opt_exclude_stats 1" (without the quotes)
* hit execute

This will put an end to LJ's fuckery. (It puts an end to a lot of the crap LJ tries to slip in, actually.) This little known command is actually their official response to complaints. They won't comment on how this is extremely bad form on LJ's part. Not only is it a huge security risk, it's a terrible policy to go modifying your users' content (and altering links is modifying content) without telling them you're doing it, and while trying your best to hide the fact that you're doing it. It's even worse to make that policy, screw it up, take the script down, then go right back to your old tricks. I am extremely uncomfortable with LJ sending my links to a third party, particularly one that has a very sketchy reputation. LJ, I am disappointed.

Tristan

My baby boy Tristan is gone. He only had one working kidney, and it was failing fast. The best thing I could do for him was to let him go peacefully and painlessly. I'm a bit of a wreck right now, so please bear with me if my mood is erratic for the next few days. I'm going to be doing my best to distract myself and shower Galahad with love. Goodbye, my sweet boy. I love you so much. Mornings are never going to be the same without you tapping my face to wake me up. I will miss you walking across my keyboard or giving me a 20lb headbutt in the boob when you want my attention.

We had 13 happy years together, and now he's waiting for me with Scamper and Missy and Morris and Raven and Dito and Xena and Mordred and Sunny and Rico and Sheba. He lived with me from New England to Atlanta and back again, through relationships and breakups and roommates. He was obnoxious, he was a brat, he was a downright dick sometimes, but he was also one of the most loving cats I have ever known. Every time he was at the vet the doctors and nurses and techs would tell me how handsome he was and how much of an attention whore he was. I used to joke that if anyone every broke into my apartment, he would wander over to say "Hey, put the TV down and pet me!"

I love you, Tristan. I'll see you again, promise.

I think I'm coming down with the flu. My body is aching and I'm coughing and sneezing. So I am taking a nap. But before I do, I must share this picture from Entertainment Weekly magazine:

Slightly spoilery for The Vampire Diaries. But it's hawt. )
