SUCCESS!!!!

Guys... I don't believe it, but I decided to try one more time to import, and my LiveJournal imported.  All the way back to my very first LJ post in 2003 "I am Broccoli of Borg". Holy COW!  I didn't think it was going to work.  Even my comments imported.  When it said it was successful SO QUICKLY I was sure it was some kind of mistake, but it continued to process the comments and the almost as quickly that was ALSO imported.  HOLY WOW COW! I'm so happy that it worked.  I was sure it was going to be blocked forever. The few days where I was posting to both places, it actually just slotted the LJ entries in the right place on DW like they'd always been there.

I wonder if there's a way to use my custom mood themes here.  I'm really delighted and if I can just figure out the CSS to make my Journal layout right, it'll be perfect.  It looks and feels just like LJ without the weird stuff they added over the last few years, and without the R*****n O*******y owning it.

YAY!

Freaking YAY!!!

(If you've been trying. I suggest you try again.  If you aren't on DW and want to leave because concerns, seems like a good time to do so.  You'll find me there. Same username.)

Imports and Exports

I guess it's needless to say that given LiveJournal is now a Russian owned and Russian run company, many of us in the west are concerned given the current situation, that we may very well find ourselves unable to access our LiveJournals. I HOPE it doesn't come to that, but it's something that is on our minds.

Given that concern, I made a DreamWidth account and thought I could use it as a backup since Semagic is supposed to work with both and it's supposed to be possible to cross-post from DW to LJ (It's not anymore btw. at least not at present.)  It's also supposed to be possible to import your entire LJ into DW. This was working for some as of posts I saw on Feb 2 (I think). So yesterday I started trying to do that.

Well given that LJ my journal import into DW as a safety measure has failed (though I was able to import my tags and userpix and other things... just not entries.  I have used the tool provided to download all of the CSV files.  I copied them into another folder and converted them to HTML files. (done by changing the extension to html... go figure.)

The CSV file opens with Excel.
The HTML file opens with a browser into a more or less readable format. There's a little bit of formatting weirdos that act as the headers of the entry. No comments included though, alas, but at least the entries are preserved in some way.  Maybe DW will figure out a way to import from CSV or HTML.

It seems that you can also get an XML file, I downloaded one... and it seems like I was able to look at it in the browser, but it's coded. It's still readable.  I feel like the first time I opened it with Firefox it followed the code and somewhat formatted it into a readable... well I don't remember. Maybe it wasn't. It's bedtime though, so I'll fiddle with it after work tomorrow.

It's kind of been a pain in the behind, but at least I have the files and they're reasonably organized and file coded by date. If anyone else is looking at this problem and feeling this way.  I hope this is helpful.

My name is the same on DreamWidth if you want to add me to your circle when you get there or if you're already there.  It's pretty nice. The platform has the feel of LJ back in the days before they started adding stupid 'features' to try to make it more like FxcxBook and less like a blog.  So there's that. I haven't dug into the code of the layouts yet. I need to find a clean CSS of something so I can plug things into it.  So at present, though I loaded the CSS from my Spring Argyle layout, it's not displaying correctly. Sorry. but I'm visible. That's what's important.

Now it's really and truly bedtime.  Nighty night.

Argyle

FIXED IT!

So if you HAPPENED to be on my page in the last hour or so, you may have noticed that it looked pretty chaotic, if you HAPPENED to refresh it multiple times you might have noticed that it was gradually reconstructing itself. Well now it's all finished. I was working on reclaiming another of my favorite layouts. Spring Argyle and now it's perfect again.

These have been a little bit of a struggle for me because LJ apparently eliminated the Bloggish theme on which I based tons of my layouts. Also PhotoFuckit said it was done existing for it's intended purpose, so I transferred all my images to Imgur and had to go through the CSS and fix every single graphic link, some of which I had not properly labeled in my code so I had to guess and try different ones until I had the right thing. I have a bunch of images that were IN my folder for this layout but which were NOT in the actual layout. So I guess I'll remove them to save myself confusion another 20 years in the future. lol

Also, I've already grown a small 3rd boob under my arm from my jab. Took a couple of days to grow it last time. Just thought you'd like to know. lol

Oh PS

I changed my layout back to Winter Snow so my flashy holiday theme will no longer assault your eyes this year.  Just my falling snow animation. lol (I feel like someone didn't like that at some point, but I do and I put a fair amount of work into it before I really knew how to make an animated gif from scratch.)

YAY! My Yule decorations are up on LiveJournal!

I know not everyone is that excited about my old Yule Theme "The Holly and the Ivy" but I just spent nearly 4 hours repairing it, so I'm very excited about it.  (Actually I spent about an hour and a half on this, and the rest of the time trying to figure out why I can't get my Winter Snow theme saved correctly in My Styles.  I guess LiveJournal has killed the S2 Bloggish (Unstyled) Theme and I'm rolling old school. It was the best one to work with, and all the rest of them sucked by comparison and still suck from what I can tell.

My last little piece of joy was correcting a single character in a link which put my blinking Yule lights across the top of my container.  They make me happy. lol.

I have a big day tomorrow for my day off. I'm picking my mom up so we can go meet the family lawyer over at my brother's house to assess whether it will be worthwhile to at least finish some work he seemed to be doing (he had taken the door and skirting board trim off in some of his rooms and had painted, but hadn't replaced the trim.) or if it would be better to just sell it as is.  I'm voting for doing that small amount of work as it would probably only take an afternoon or two to tack new baseboards on, and if they are not in his garage it won't cost much to buy new ones to match the rest of the house.  It looked like he had taken up the carpet and was planning to refinish the hardwood floor his office when he finished painting, which is why he probably had the trim off in the first place.  If it were my choice, I'd also just go ahead and finish that too.  Just that little bit of work wouldn't cost much even if we did hire someone to do it, and it's mostly work my daughter and I can handle having done it before in our old house.  It would raise the value of his little house, so I think that would be worthwhile not just because WE would get more out of it, but also would probably reduce the likelyhood of his wonderful nice neighbors ending up with a crappy neighbor ending up in his house.

All that said, it's really time to go to bed now.

Lol

I'm just stopping by here.  Honestly, I feel like hardly any of my friends are using livejournal any more. Photobucket totally destroyed all my beautiful themes that I worked so hard on.  It's been so long that I don't really remember how to make them again and I don't want to waste time making new ones... or learning how to adapt my old ones... OR taking the time to find a new place to serve the images from.  So I'm back to boring default layouts.  At some point I did apparently move my cute little cloud mood icons over to LiveJournal Proper.

So I'd love if anyone is still here, to get a comment so I know you're still around. I know there seemed to be a mass migration to a basically duplicated service, but I don't remember what it was called, and since I haven't been LiveJournaling with any regularity, I don't know if it's still that active either.  FxcxBook has pretty much ruined everything.  I hate it so much, but but that's how I stay in touch with family and friends so....

Since I've been writing again, having finally figured out WHY I haven't been writing, I've made some changes to my setup. No longer using my office for writing.  It's not comfortable. It's fine for stuff I need an office for, but I needed my swing arm and couch setup back. So I've been writing a lot more recently. Chasing the Trail FMA fanfiction has two new chapters and a third underway. I've been working on Gaia's Song some too.

October this year was extremely unkind to me, so I'm still in recovery from that.  The stress got me pretty sick for a while, but Docs and meds seem to have me on the right track for recovery from that, and my stress level has started to decrease now that I'm starting to feel better physically.  It kind of sucks when you're sick because you're so stressed out but being sick is the thing that has put you over the top of your stress tolerance.

Anyway, I'll leave it there. Give me a shout out and i'll try to check back and see how things are going.

PS if you have a photo sharing site you use to serve pictures, let me know what you're using and I'll check it out.  I told Photobucket to kiss my ass.  I took everything off of it and uploaded one 'artwork' that basically said "Goodbye Photobucket! You suck now" lol

Photobucket?

Oh and WOAH!  Photobucket... what the hell has happened to you... All my cute little handmade mood icons have turned into this giant "BUY MY SUPER EXPENSIVE $$$$400 A YEAR PACKAGE IF YOU WANT TO BE ABLE TO HOTLINK YOUR PHOTOS TO LIVEJOURNAL OR ANYTHING!!!$$$"

Seriously? WTF... Anyone using custom mood icons?  Where are you hosting them now? I've been gone too long... This ugliness needs to go away quickly.

Autumn Layout

I had forgotten that I finally designed an Autumn layout that I actually liked. So I thought I ought to change it before it's winter. I don't think I changed my Spring layout to Summer until it was almost Autumn. I haven't designed a layout in forever and ever. Seems like at least a couple of years. I just don't spend as much time online as I used to, and much of my online activity is done on my smartphone.

I'm guessing my posts must be made of utter and complete boredom the last couple of times. Either that or I need to get a few more friends. So many people on my friends list are gone, or inactive or deleted. Lol Talk to me people. Let's have a conversation about something.

(no subject)

I don't know how many people here care, but LiveJournal has finally made major updates to its Android and iOS apps. I've been testing it out for a couple of days and though it still lacks a couple of things that I want I find it greatly improved.  90% of the problems I had with the app (some but not most of which were slightly better in a third party app called ElJay, but not enough to be really useful) have been fixed.  Many features I was looking for have been added and so far though a c
ouple of things I want are still not there, I am finding the app usable now. Since I do a vast majority of my social networking on my phone now, that was really important to me. I can now keep up much more easily;  something I was really having trouble with before.  If you use a smartphone, you may want to try it out.

Hopefully, it will mean that I'm here a lot more and participating in conversations.  I miss it.  I'm getting in the habit of just scanning through my feed on Facebook once or twice a day because the is really very little posted there that isn't junk. (reposts, silly quizzes and so on.)

Hopefully it will see more of my friend who are not posting very often using LiveJournal more. I think I need to scan through my interests and find more people who are active.  So many of my friends have not posted in months or even years. quite a few have deleted their accounts too.  That makes me sad.

This is a test.

I mentioned to shanachie_quill in a comment on one of evil_little_dog's posts that I used Semagic, and that I really liked it. In that comment I also mentioned that I believed that now Semagic is able to upload your images directly to LiveJournal without having to post them somewhere else.  Since I wasn't sure, I said I would test it, and so that is what this post means to do.

Here is a picture:

Ok... Upon testing, I'm not sure if it's uploading to LiveJournal Scrapbook, or if it's uploading to Picasa... It took me a minute to figure it out, because I would putting in my email I use on LiveJournal and it was giving me an error. When I changed to my regular Gmail, it seems to have uploaded. so we'll see.

ETA: from my side I can see the picture. I'm not 100% sure where it uploaded to though, which was one of the reasons I posted something innocuous like a crocheted octopus (which I sell btw, custom made to order for $20.)
