There is no escape
In fact I do not share this mood, however I think this animation might bring some support for some people in some situations. One might feel as if trapped in superficial surrounding festivity. One might get encircled by terrifying supposedly Christmassy decorations (this was the case at the nearby bus stop several years ago, even the supermarket looked joyful in comparison to some ‘decorated’ trees). One might really enjoy their work, also the light decorations at work which are much nicer in the dark after everyone else left. Then, somehow, one may suddenly reflect on the old Soviet practice of keeping the scientists in prison Experimental Design Bureau. They probably could enjoy their work even there, some of them at least. You have a theme, the results are needed, and you would be working all the time anyway. I’ve read a bit about this, admittedly not much. Surely this very secret and restrictive way to organize the research is inherently appalling. Yet it might have something in common with the ‘secular’ research culture, the one where the Monday begins on Saturday and everyone is at work on the New Year Eve. On the other hand, this culture is worldwide and certainly very pronounced on the other side of the globe. At least it is what PhD Comics tells.
Well, let there be lights.
