One icon! (replying is hard....)

You know how sometimes you look at your to-do list and then decide to do something else entirely? Yeah. Evidently I just made the following icon:
an icon which is a crop of a screen shot of the DW/LJ reply pane containing text in the comment box which says:I'm losing a staring contest with a button...
Because sometimes hitting 'reply' is hard, you know?

Perhaps some other time I'll do various other icons on this theme but this seems to have used up my remaining brainpower for the day...

icon policy thingy: This icon is freely steal-able and freely modifiable. Credit would be very much appreciated but isn't required. Comments/feedback would be loved but are not required. If you are inspired by the concept and end up making some of your own, I'd love to squee at them, so feel free to drop a link if you'd like. :)

Image search: shadow with binocs&/camera?

I'm looking for photos of any and all of the following sorts of images (which have licenses which permit creative works or which are ones which I can ask the owner for such permission):
crossposted to my journal and [community profile] pixelhunters.

An amazingly long resource post by someone just starting making icons

ETA 2 Aug 2010: If you would like to more easily see the structure of this post (by which I mean: having the cuts not expanded), then [view this post with all the cuts in place (on DW)] or [view this post with all the cuts in place (on LJ)]. End ETA.

Okay, icons! Evidently I am making some? This confuses me-- it's not really something I ever expected to be doing, at least not beyond the basic crop&shrink, but it's kind of fun so far. And I can see how it could easily become addictive (luckily going down that road would take dedication and focus and not getting distracted by other shiny ideas. And I'm certain to fail on at least one of those points, so hopefully I won't get eaten by the icon-making monster). But since I never really expected or intended to make icons, I haven't really been paying any attention to icon tutorials or resources [or even conventions of the community (beyond the basic 'give credit' and 'verify that it is permissible before modifying an icon someone else made'), so I'm kind of scrambling to play catch-up on that front-- although I'll say that compiling this list was a minor crash-course]. Aaaand of course I went and started working on icons when I didn't really have a good connection so I wasn't really on the internet for fun, which means no instructions or tutorials. And I'm not terribly savvy at image manip programs to begin with, either. *shakes head at self* Eh, leaping in with both feet and trying to wing it and/or figure out what I need on the go is pretty par for the course for me learning new crafts, so at least I'm used to it?.

So this post is a way for me to collect all that info which I should have methodically gathered and looked through (or at least skimmed before setting parts of it aside for later) before beginning to iconify (which is totally a word because I used it in a sentence, *phthbit* says I to the scolding voice in my head which sounds like one of my more dour English teachers in school).

I've gathered this by going to the icon-makers (icon-artists? what's the accepted term?) listed in my profile and checking what resources and tutorials they have listed. This is clearly not an exhaustive list nor does it reflect what I've found useful to me since I haven't actually read any of them yet. The first is probably, strictly speaking, impossible to achieve (which is no reason not to attempt it) and the latter may or may not happen at some point.

I started making this for my own use and then I decided that as long as I was spontaneously organising things I might as well post it publicly. Which sadly meant that I had to go back and make sure I was using complete sentences and providing some actual context and perhaps just a bit of coherency. It's probably still a fairly idiosyncratic compilation. If you have other links you think I ought to add, drop me a line and let me know! :)

And now (finally!) onto the links portion of the evening:

Icon-making resources and tutorials from iconers
(These may or may not also include general image-manip stuff too.) Arranged by iconer, in some vague fashion. Annotated according to my whim.

More tutorials
Specifically, those by people whom I didn't find via the icons I have currently uploaded. (yes, this is quite possibly an arbitrary designation, but it sort of makes sense at the moment, so eh, might as well.)

Comms
(aka: dude, I probably should have at least known that these existed before I started iconning?iconing?iconifying! [I knew there was a reason I made up that word!]. Anyway, I probably ought to have known of the existence of these comms prior to beginning to iconify. By the way, we're currently taking bets on if I'll actually poke through them at all before I upload my first icon set (the odds are against me, btw *g*).

Okay, time for food I think. And maybe later I'll actually leave all ten thousand of those links a comment saying 'I have linked this at this post at my journal' but right now it's nommy food time! Nom! Done!

not dead yet! really! also: pointing out a new fest (festibility)

Second things first: [community profile] access_fandom is running its first Fanworks Festival, Festibility! [The announcement post for Festibility.]

First things second:

I am in fact not dead! Really! Nor has my computer or my router been spirited away by evil internet-hating aliens. I haven't really been around because the idea of having to read all the words (if I were clever, I'd stick a modified image of 'clean all the things :(' here...) is ever so intimidating to my brain right now. Plus, if I actually do read, then there's the reply pane at the bottom! And writing all the words is also intimidating! Aaaaaand if I do manage to have words in my head by the time I get to the reply pane at the bottom of the entry after having read all the words, I feel guilty for not having read &/ replied to other (probably more important, but at least older) posts. And then I don't do anything. Um, yeah, I dunno, my head is weird I guess.

Anyway, I'm currently behind on personal posts and very much not at all on top of comms (aside from the ones that I'm tracking new posts due to mod/etc duties) and utterly not following meta-- and this is likely to continue to be so for a bit (until my brain decides otherwise, but it's not like it's telling me its plans, so, indefinite). I'd like to actually comment occasionally, so I'm going to tell myself that commenting is fine if I have something to say, even if it's silly or small and even if there are 'more important' or newer or older posts by the same/different person which I'd-- in an ideal world-- like to reply to first but as the 'reply' button on that post is being more intimidating I'll have to give up on the ideal case and just go with the flow.

So if you need to get in touch with me for some reason, don't assume that I've seen a post you've made on it-- email is certain to get noticed although there may be a few days lag time (though all comments to my journal also get emailed, so they end up in my inbox too? eh, *shrugs*).

Thing the third! Update on the Fishy status! (Other than 'not terribly communicative', which, yeah, we'd already figured out...):

Aside from being not very wordy, things are mostly okay in Fishlandia (which is a happy improvement to my earlier terrible-horrible-no-good-very-bad-(month?)(two months?)(six weeks?)-time-period-which-I-stopped-tracking), so that's good. And somehow I've ended up working on a bunch of icons? I guess it's because they don't have any words? Not sure when I'll get the first batch of those posted-- I'm in the 'nearly done except for this and this and this and oh wait what about this genius idea oh wait that'll take a while' place, so probably not for a bit? Unless I manage to restrain myself, in which case it might be sooner? Eh, *handwaves*.

So yeah, that's all I've got. How are you? Take care and I'll see you on the flip side (whenever and whereever that may be).

Oh Sherlock Holmes!

Not that I have any real graphics skill, not that I have any real time to learn how to make icons, not that I don't have loads of other things on my mental to-do list, but....

If I wanted to go about making some icons from the new Sherlock Holmes, does anyone know where I should go looking for caps?

*disappears back down the rabbit-hole of the to-do list*

2009 wish list

I haven't seen anyone else put up a wishlist yet, but it's nearing the end of the calendrical year, so I figured I may as well start. And then you can continue it :)

This is modified from my wish list of last year. I've decided to drop the physical things because it seems silly to spend money on shipping when it could go to better things. I may update it if I think of more things in the next few weeks (updates will be marked).

icon meme redux!

So [the last time] I did the icon meme I had seven icons between my two accounts.

However! Now I have 58 on my DW and 6 on my LJ, which means something like 60 between them. But my very nice gift of a paid DW account lapses on the 21st (at midmorning, but I'm not certain the time zone), so I only have massive quantities of icons for a little bit!

And what better way to celebrate than a meme, I ask you!

[DW icons] || [LJ icons]

Meme: Pick six icons and I'll tell you why I have them and probably a bit about what they mean to me. And if you want to play, tell me and I'll choose 6 of your icons.

Meme closes when icons disappear. Then I'll upload the chosen icons to photobucket so I can answer the meme.

ETA: Apparently when your paid account lapses they don't remove the icons from their servers, they just make you able to choose from only 6 for new posts. So you can still choose icons if you'd like!

three things, for a large enough value of three

3) I've decided that I'm now posting my recs solely to my recs comm: fish_recs. (There's still a few entries here that I havne't migrated over, so I'm not advertising the comm to recsrainbow or to other places yet, but it's close enough to up and running that I don't feel like crossposting). If there's anyone on DW who would like there to be a DW comm or feed or something, let me know and I'll set one up.

So this is the last announcement of a rec list that will happen on my journal. [I just posted] a rec set of SGA fic that deals with being closeted. There was some emotional theme I was going for when I compiled the list, but I'm not quite sure what it was. I think it might have had something to do with the isolation of the closet? Don't know. Emotions are complicated.

3.1) The [OTW] is having [a fundraising drive] and [info - personal] general_jinjur has [some great reasons] to donate (link contains several images, all work-safe). I think the OTW is awesome. I need to look into my finances to see what I can afford and if it'll extend to making a large enough donation to get some swag (I really want a sticker! And a new mug would be useful-- the current one isn't very insulatory any more.)

3.14) [Yuletide nominations are up!] Someone's already nominated Bettina's fandom, which might just have caused me to shout out 'Yes! Awesome!' to my empty room. I'm still trying to figure out if I'm likely be responsible enough to sign up. (But I really want to!) I'm also pondering which fandoms to nominate, but I'm trying to not do too much of that before I decide if I'm actually signing up (because I don't want to be lead astray by desire for really awesome fic). After all, there's always next year.

3.141) I had something else, I swear?

3.1415) Oh, right. So that Leverage fic I'm currently working on? The POV character keeps trying to change on me (not in a consistent fashion, either). And Hardison doesn't know if he's crushing on Parker or not. I think he might be, since I think that it'll make for a tighter story in this case, but that does affect my plot some and I haven't decided how. I'm also having real trouble with voice, surprisingly. And yet, despite all of this? I'm enjoying writing the story! And I think that when it's edited and all is said and done that it'll be a good one. So I suppose it's going well, if not smoothly.

3.14159) I really want a Bettina's fandom icon, but I've been too lazy to make one. Maybe this point and the point above ought to combine into telling me to not sign up for Yuletide?

3.141592) I've been on a big posting kick lately, huh. Don't know why. Sorry for spamming your flists.

ICONS! I CAN HAVE THEM!

DW has this 'sponsor a free user' program, where free users get randomly selected for paid account times. And this little fishie is now the surprised recipient of 2 months of paid DW account time. Which means lots of poking around the features that I've been ignoring shall come later.

BUT! And here's where I need *your* help!

ICONS! I CAN HAS 75 ICONS!

So, um, icons I should have? Places I should look for icons? Etc.

Because I'm only going to have them for a short amount of time! And so I should use them and love them and pet them and name them my squishy and sob when they leave me.

Thank you, [info - personal] yvi!
