Dabi (荼毘, だび), Born Todoroki Touya (a name he mostly uses after the incidents to antagonise his family and not to sincerely refer to himself) is an antagonist in the Boku no Hero Academia manga and anime.

His name's Kanji meanings are as follows:

荼毘 (Dabi) - Cremation

燈 (tō) - Lamp

矢 (ya) - Arrow

Canon

Dabi is a member of the League of Villains, a villainous organization led by Shigaraki Tomura whose ultimate goal is the destruction of hero society and the public's faith in heroes. Dabi joined the organization after being inspired by Hero Killer Stain and his belief that hero society was rotten at its core. Despite not having a lot of respect for Shigaraki or trust in his leadership skills, Dabi becomes a valuable member of the League of Villains, playing a fundamental role in their operations.

Personality

As a child, he was energetic and devoted to his father and his dream of being the number one hero and surpassing all might, and learning his quirk hurt him did not make him stop wanting that. He has always been obsessed with his goals, to the point of not caring about hurting himself, this only got worse the more obsessed he got. When Shoto was born, with the quirk Enji had set out for when he entered into a quirk marriage with Rei, Dabi felt cast aside and ignored, because he was, at one point even lashing out at Rei and an infant Shoto with his quirk when his father refused to look at him, although he expressed regret for this later. He had an okay relationship with Natsuo and Fuyumi, but never developed one with Shoto as he was kept seperate from his siblings and underwent abusive training. The whiplash of being the centre of attention to being neglected and scolded lead to growing instability and single-minded focus on training his quirk to gain the attention of his father. When it evolved and got stronger, he wanted to show his dad and asked him to watch him. His father never came, and Dabi was presumed dead after he lost control of his power due to his strong emotional reaction. After waking up 3 years later from a coma, he went back to his old house to make amends with his family, but left after he saw that Endeavor hadn't changed and was still abusing Shoto, obsessed with surpassing All Might.

Dabi changed after this, not just changing his name but becoming more aloof, confident, and focused. He was still rude and often violent to everyone he met, but cautious and perceptive. He gave off the impression of knowing more about people than he let on, and had no unconditional trust in anyone.

Upon learning of stain's motivations, he latched onto them as his own as they alligned somewhat with his own view, however unlike Stain he didn't believe in good heroes, and would hurt innocents, and was motivated by vengance against endeavor and, for a time, Overhaul until that vengance was carried out. Dabi is most happy when taunting heroes and hero students, and enjoys inflicting pain and commiting murder and other destructive crimes. He often engages in psychological warfare, especially when cooling down from his quirk.

While not caring about most people in any sense except for what he could gain from them, he sometimes did kind things for his teammates such as encouraging Twice and Himiko, and burning down Himiko's home, although these helped him aswell.

Following his identity reveal, he allowed himself to be more authentic, showing his sadism and thought process. Although he discarded the name of Touya previously, he began using it again to cause more pain to his father. He would do anything to make his father suffer, including hurting his family, especially Shoto, random civilians and himself. At times he regressed to a child-like state of mind, thinking of his family being happy and together (apart from Shoto).

Quirk

Cremation/Blueflame: Dabi's fire Quirk grants him the ability to generate blue flames from his body instantaneously, expelling them at will from any part body with minimum effort. His flames are extremely hot, and due to their blue coloration, it is believed their temperature and intensity are higher than that of normal fire. Dabi can also combust anything he touches. He inherited his mother's constitution, giving him cold resistance, while he does have some heat/fire resistance, it's weak compared to the power of his own fire and leaves him burned after prolonged use or use of higher temperatures.

After a near-death experience, he manifested the ice from his mum's quirk within his core to help him survive the intense burns.

Fandom

Dabi is a Todoroki Theory

A fan theory that was so popular that it was almost accepted as fact is the Dabi is a Todoroki theory.[1] Given the information about the Quirk of the last Todoroki sibling, Touya, in Chapter 283 (specifically, that he inherited Endeavor's firepower but his mother's weak/cold-based constitution), it seemed this theory was close to being confirmed, given Dabi's overwhelmingly powerful fire quirk and heavy burn scarring.

In Chapter 191, Dabi calls Endeavor by his full name, indicating they have a history together.

The theory was confirmed as canon by Chapter 290, wherein Dabi reveals his identity as Todoroki Touya to Endeavor and Todoroki by washing the black dye out of his hair and announcing his birth name.
