George buys roses for John. He had never bought flowers for the man when he was alive so it seems deeply ironic that he is buying them now. He lays them on the coffin and then takes up his position at the top right hand corner. On his left is John's father, briefly they exchange glances.

His dress uniform is uncomfortable, too tight around the neck. George imagines he hears John making fun of him. His fellow pall bearers are in place and George puts his head up, stares resolutely ahead as tears run down his face. He starts walking.
