The Misfits are a small squad of New California Republic troopers stationed at Camp Golf in Fallout: New Vegas.
Background[edit]
Part of 9th Platoon at Camp Golf in 2281,[1] the commanding officer of the Misfits, Sergeant McCredie, is disappointed in their lack of discipline, work ethic, and camaraderie, though he does have some faith in the leader of the squad, Mags.[2] Each of the Misfits are in the NCR Army with ulterior motives or in some way against their will. For example, Mags wanted to be an NCR Ranger, but wasn't able to and joined the NCR Army instead.[3] O'Hanrahan joined the army because a string of bad harvests made his family unable to feed three children, and as the oldest child he joined the army.[4] Poindexter is trying to get the benefits of being in the army, without any of the risk of injury by being a mediocre soldier.[5] Finally, Razz preferred to be part of the NCR instead of dying as a Fiend.[6]

Related Quests[edit]
- Flags of Our Foul-Ups: The Courier has the opportunity to whip them into shape during the quest Flags of Our Foul-Ups. Depending on the completion of the quest, and the Courier's actions elsewhere in the Mojave, the Misfits may play a key role in repelling the Legion assault on Camp Golf during the Second Battle of Hoover Dam, or desert and be court-martialed and executed by the NCR Army, among a variety of possible outcomes. Most crucial in interacting with the Misfits themselves is how effective the Courier is in attempting to influence and correct their behavior, and in what way.
Endings[edit]
Narrated by Mags
| # | Slide | Voice-over narration | In-game condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Slain to the last man by the Courier, The Misfits were at least spared the humiliation of dying during Caesar's attack on Camp Golf. Few mourned their absence. |
Kill all The Misfits. | |
| 2 | Shaped up by the Courier's advice, The Misfits distinguished themselves during the Legion's attack on Camp Golf. Mags was finally promoted to Sergeant, and the rest of The Misfits received an official commendation. They continued to serve with distinction for many years. |
Complete Flags of Our Foul-Ups using O'Harahan's or Mags' advice. Complete any endgame except Veni, Vidi, Vici. | |
| 3 | Though Camp Golf fell to Caesar, The Misfits distinguished themselves during the Legion's attack. Mags and her soldiers were posthumously recognized for their valor by NCR. |
Complete Flags of Our Foul-Ups using O'Harahan's or Mags' advice. Complete Veni, Vidi, Vici for Caesar's Legion. | |
| 4 | The Misfits' laziness caught up with them when the Legion attacked Camp Golf. Those who weren't killed in the attack attempted to flee, but were caught at Mojave Outpost, court-martialed, and hanged from the ranger monument. |
Do not complete Flags of Our Foul-Ups, or complete it with Poindexter's advice and complete Veni, Vidi, Vici for Caesar's Legion or use Poindexter's advice and complete All or Nothing for Mr. House. | |
| 5 | Driven into a frenzy by their use of psycho, The Misfits inflicted heavy casualties on the Legion during the defense of Camp Golf. At first they were commended for their valor, but eventually, desperate for more of the chem, they turned on travelers in Outer Vegas. For their dishonorable conduct, the NCR court-martialed and executed them by firing squad. |
Complete Flags of Our Foul-Ups using Razz's advice, complete any endgame quest except Veni, Vidi, Vici. |

- ↑ "Watch out for the Misfits here - 9th Platoon, word of their fuck-ups is legendary."
(Cass' Dialogue) - ↑ Courier:"Sounds like you're a little disappointed in your troops."
McCredie:"Disappointed? We call 'em the Misfits for a reason. They're undisciplined, lazy, and they have absolutely no espirit de corps. The squad leader's got some promise, kid named Mags, but as for the rest...{Trails off} I don't see much hope. I'm going to make them shape up if it kills me, though. Or them, for that matter."
(McCredie's Dialogue) - ↑ Courier:"Why'd you join the Army?"
Mags:" I guess I wanted to make something of myself, you know? Be the best of the best. I *wanted* to be a ranger, but... guess this is as close as I get."
(Mags' Dialogue) - ↑ Courier:"How'd you end up in the Army?"
O'Hanrahan:"Well, as it turns out, we had a string of bad harvests a few years back. Pa said he couldn't afford to feed but three youngins, or we'd starve. As the biggest one it was my job to go join the Army so's my sisters could eat and so's we wouldn't all be killed by raiders and Jesus would love us. It's all right, I guess. I don't like all the fighting we gotta do, though."
(O'Hanrahan's Dialogue) - ↑ Courier:"How'd a guy like you end up in the Army?"
Poindexter:"It's a simple idea: the Army offers fiscal security and generous benefits at the cost of substantial personal risk - if you're on the front line.If you perform too poorly, they'll scrub you out. Perform too well, and you get sent to the front lines. All I have to do is ride that mediocrity gradient to a cushy, do-nothing job miles away from the war. "
(Poindexter's Dialogue) - ↑ Courier:"Why are you in the Army?"
Razz:"Shit, man/honey, it was this or the Fiends, and Fiends don't last too long in the NCR. At least this way the badasses with the top-shelf guns are on my side."
(Razz's Dialogue)
- ↑ Joshua Sawyer: "Writing duties are split up among designers. Not all designers write, but the majority of us do. Some do a larger share than others. I'll miss some here, but notably:
Travis Stout - Lily, Raul, the Misfits, some Goodsprings, Follows-Chalk, Waking Cloud, some Happy Trails folks, and a bunch of stuff on Old World Blues"
