Dan Spitzley is a developer who worked at Interplay Entertainment on Fallout 2 as a programmer.
Biography[edit]
Spitzley grew up in Grosse PointePark, Michigan.[Dev 1] He graduated from the University of Southern California in 1995.[Ext 1]
Career[edit]
Spitzley was the lead programmer for Planescape: Torment. Close to the release of Fallout and Fallout 2, he was pulled off of Planescape: Torment to do area scripting for around two months. He later worked on the cancelled Baldur's Gate III and Van Buren before leaving Black Isle.[Dev 1] He then took a position as a senior programmer at Obsidian Entertainment.[Ext 1]
Fallout Series[edit]
- Fallout
For Fallout, he reworked "pretty much all of" the Hub, but he couldn't remember any other contributions for the game.[Dev 1] Tim Cain credits Spitzley with fixing an issue with Fallout's electronic registration.[Ext 2]
- Fallout 2
The Vault City designer notes include credit to Robert Hertenstein 2 and Spitzley for the scripting of Vault City.[1] He is also credited with working on Navarro, Broken Hills, the Den, and on raiders.[Pub 1] He clarified that he scripted all of Vault City, and did the bulk of the scripting in Broken Hills and Navarro. He also did some design work on Broken Hills, and created Micky, the Professor, the Professor's Radscorpion and Lumpy.[Dev 1]
- Van Buren
He worked on Van Buren for a short time as a programmer before leaving Black Isle.[Dev 1] He described his role as a gameplay programmer and spent most of his time converting code that was meant for the canceled Baldur's Gate III to be relevant for a Fallout game.[Ext 3]

- ↑ Dan Spitzley: "As for Van Buren, I was one of the primary gameplay programmers, and I spent most of my time converting code we had written for the canceled Baldur's Gate 3 to be relevant for a Fallout game. I was only on that project for a few months before I left for Obsidian. It was becoming clearer that Black Isle wasn't going to be around for much longer. It was very disappointing when the end came, especially since the final playable demo showed pretty clearly how great the game could have been."
