another round of "my character..." -- Pirate style
(Completely off-topic, but bless Jon Stewart and The Daily Show writers.)
I've been thinking about this since
fabu started posting the fic examples of her vision of the PotC characters. Actually, I've been thinking about it since we did that round of "my character x" for Stargate, Farscape and Alias the other month.
firesignwriter's post yesterday was just the proverbial straw.
None of these thoughts are anywhere near complete, since I was writing them in between (and sometimes during) sessions at a conference, but here goes:
My Jack
* Is well aware that life is short.
* Believes in living.
* Has found that being quick (on his feet, in his decisions, to change his mind, with his smile and his sword) is the key to achieving the latter while lacking control over the former.
* Is amused by the idea that patience is a virtue (or, really, the entire idea of virtue), but it's never not paid off, so...
* Long ago stopped completely ruling out the possibility of anything.
* Is both older and younger than he looks and feels, but it's not age that matters so, no, he's not going to say.
* Forgets nothing.
* Tells the truth far more often than he lies and knows better than to say so.
* Isn't all about the pretty, the shiny, the fun...but it doesn't hurt.
* Would like to think that he's learned to recognize his weaknesses and to make use of them as often as possible so others don't.
* Has nothing that he can't live without, and things that he will do anything to keep (short of dying, because that would negate both the keeping and the living, which would render the entire affair useless).
My James
* Is a middle son, although that's not precisely true, since there were four of them.
* Considers Governor Swann to be more than a father.
* Believes he will always love Elizabeth and knows that's very different from being in love.
* Is aware of how just many people are affected by every decision he makes as an officer of rank.
* Trusts himself.
* Has never resented the responsibilities he chose to accept, but that's not to say that he has always shouldered them with a smile.
* Wishes more people could see what he has seen and is proud that they haven't.
* Hadn't really thought about Turner for years and doesn't plan to think about him now, unless it is necessary.
* Would never fuck a man under his command.
* Knows there are reasons that the rules that exist do exist, will uphold them as best he can with whatever resources he has, and knows that there are reasons that rules change.
* Still has the ribbon that he pulled from the hair of the first girl he kissed.
* Would rather kill a man himself than order death.
My Barbossa
* Is a bastard, truly, and -- thanks to the education provided -- made a point of discovering just which blueblood was to blame.
* Has never taken kindly to orders, but learned to smile in the face of them long before he had to follow Jack's.
* Hadn't named the monkey until that moment.
* Loves language, the roll of it almost as much as the slice it can administer.
* Didn't become a pirate because of the capacity for hedonism inherent in the occupation, but revels in it nonetheless.
* Doesn't particularly like anyone.
Meant to get to others, but phooey on all-day conferences in freezing-cold rooms when I woke up with the sniffles. I'm going to go find chicken soup.
