Built like Castles on the Sand; part two

[OOC: Condtinuation of the previous log; featuring jai_bakura, ryou_bakura, and a few noteable background voices.]

If the funeral had been somber then the day afterward was soaked with chaos; so much to be set in order and so many tasks to tend to. It was difficult to catch sight of anyone, even in passing, and the easiest thing to do was to stay out of the way. Ryou had spent most of his morning sitting at the cluttered kitchen table near the doorway of the house with his father; sorting through the paperwork of greeting cards and warm wishes.

It was an exhausting effort, so many people to thank for their support when Ryou felt like nothing really deserved anything but sorrow at the time.

Built like Castles on the Sand; part one

[OOC:
“Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live.”*

He knew why he was there, or at least he thought he knew; but the longer he stayed the less either of them understood about the circumstances, the choices, or each other. Life wouldn't wait, grief couldn't be bothered to stall, and the questioning glances felt so heavy upon them both.

The final, to my knowledge, log involving in part Ryou's original player, along with some help from a few other people with some of the background characters spotlighted; this was as much a combined effort as it was solely a log between Jai and Ryou. This log also ended up cut roughly in half, the rest is being worked into a few other projects to smooth into the time line more fluidly.

Backdated all the way back to Dec. 29th-Jan. 2nd of 2006.]

The wind-swept chill of the Californian afternoon still carried faint flickers of salt, deep enough to taste, strong enough to settle upon skin. Gritty and fresh, the soft gray skies above stood watch over the world with a passive silence and roll of steady clouds.

Somewhere there was sand, waters washing against it and the type of moment's pause that a person could get lost in the swell of the tides. Somewhere there was a sense of life and peace and the crisp snap of saltwater over bubbling sky-soft foam.

But Jai was too far from it to tell, to catch sight or sound of the ocean and the beaches. There was peace, somewhere, just beyond his grasp.

Parting Ways

[When r_bakura makes the decision that he’s been too far from home for too long it leaves jai_bakura just a bit more somber and confused about the situation than he wants to admit. Short log current dated from the hours of 10am-11:30pm.]

December had gotten here so quickly. It was almost strange to think that he had already been in New York for over a year... A whole year and about three months? It really didn't feel like that much time had already passed.

Two for the Show

[Players: r_bakura and aidan_mutou
Scene: The Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks display has attracted some rather colourful individuals. Two of them strike up a conversation while waiting for the show.
Backdated to Tuesday, July 4th.]

~*~*~

There was a world of difference between a fireworks display and a good fireworks display, Aidan mused, as he joined the crowd on the north end of FDR Drive. This event promised to be one of the latter. Fireworks in Kingston had tended to be a mediocre affair -- entertainingly so, with miscued music and all. He'd always meant to watch the Festival of Fire displays at Ontario Place in Toronto, but had never quite managed to catch one. Canada Day on Parliament Hill was the best, however, and as he'd missed that, he was hoping for a decent substitute in the July 4th display tonight.

Finding a low wall with a bit of grass on top, he quickly claimed a spot that boasted a clear view of the river. The crowd was almost overwhelming, even so early -- it would be an hour yet before true dusk and people were shuffling along towing children and lawn chairs. He watched them go by, amused by the occasional double-take his freshly dyed hair earned him. People watching was almost as entertaining as the real show would be.

Murtagh wishes he were as hot as Duke

Dirty Little Secret

Players: duke_devlin, jai_bakura, and r_bakura
Summary: Sometimes even the best plans go sideways; Duke makes a valiant first attempt to teach Jai how to play cards while Jai’s temporary roommate Ryou is out at work. But Jai quickly gets bored with the idea and the conversation goes elsewhere, shedding some insight on just what did happen that night after the Darklight. And the boys learn a valuable lesson: sometimes even the best laid plans…yeah, we’ll leave it at that for now. Takes place Wednesday, August 2.

Warnings: tactless representation of past events, varying degrees of boy on boy action of the M-rated type, and general shameless destruction of ideals of perfection. Fun stuff, you have been warned though, tread lightly. XD

* * *

For at least the third time in all of an hour Jai stared down at the glossy surfaces adorned with red and black symbols with a hint of distain in his expression. "I’m really starting to hate this game." Because for all the sharp wit and quick thinking he possessed, apparently a simple card game eluded him.

Well, not exactly simple, Jai had decided after being instructed in all the rules twice, but certainly not too complex for his brain to wrap around. It was cause and effect, chance and skill. Though half the equation was as much a mystery as why he had agreed to this new form of torment in the first place.

Stubborn pride was a deadly enemy to have.

Ties that Bind...Sometimes Don't Come with a How-To Manual

[ooc: When r_bakura finds himself out of sorts and out of means; impulse leads him towards his wayward brother. But jai_bakura doesn’t believe in family, or pointless help. So when it all comes down to need the two get a crash course in that old ideal that dictates all human interaction; the Rules of Coexistence.
Note: This log is backdated to between the days of Wednesday, July 26 through Tuesday, August 1st. It spans a fair amount of time, but the shifts are date-noted so it shouldn‘t be too much confusion.]

There are rules to certain things in life; the basic ideas that when one predator’s territory is crossed by a roaming stranger it’s time to bare fangs and protect the den. Law of the jungle; never wander where you could risk getting torn apart. But there are also human laws; laws of existence together that are needed and basic as well. The first of these, and the most important in finding a means to coexist with another being, was hardly complicated.
Learn to give instead of stand tall; take a chance and hope for the best, the worst, just learn to hope for something.

Awkward Apology - Marik and Ryou.

[Players: ishtar_marik and r_bakura.
Scene: Marik and Ryou run into each other at the grocery store. Later that evening, Ryou decides to call Marik, determined to apologize for the incident with his brother. Backdated to Saturday, June 17th.]

Grocery shopping tended to be something that most people probably had to force themselves to get done. Ryou didn't think he had ever met anyone who really enjoyed wandering around aisle after aisle in a grocery store to find all the items on their shopping list, least of all when those stores seemed to like rearranging their interior every so often. Although Ryou personally had nothing against grocery shopping himself, especially since it was a necessity at times, it wasn't exactly at the top of his list of favourite activities, either.

But it was a necessity, so here he was, visiting Emelyn Grocery International on this fine Saturday afternoon.

Shopping basket in hand, Ryou glanced around, trying to make sure that no aisles had been moved to mysterious and unfamiliar locations since the last time that he had paid the store a visit. He made his way over to a shelf, eyeing the plastic-wrapped loaves of bread sitting there. Should he go with what he usually bought or try something different?

Books and Burger King - Joey and Ryou.

[This scene takes place between joey_wheeler and r_bakura. Another trip to the library leads to Joey and Ryou talking more this time, over a bite to eat for dinner. Backdated to Thursday, June 1st.]

It was a lazy Thursday afternoon when Joey overheard two clerks from upstairs departments discussing their children's waning library habits in the courthouse cafe, and he realized he had an outstanding promise he'd never made good on. With the distraction of meeting Seto Kaiba, then the OMEGA offer, the move to Manhattan soon thereafter, and work picking up as the weather warmed, Joey had completely forgotten about the quiet, sweet clerk at the Parkchester library desk. But he had promised to return for more book recommendations...and Good Omens had been right up his alley...

Come to think of it, had he returned that thing yet? A few panicked minutes later, Joey decided that yes, he had to have dropped off the library book at some point, perhaps in the night slot, but that a visit to his old Bronx library branch would still be an enjoyable - and advisable - diversion. He didn't have anything planned for this afternoon, anyway...

It's A Small World - Serenity and Ryou

[This log takes place between redhairedbird and r_bakura on Friday, June 16th. A chance encounter at the library leads to discovering some common interests, as well as odd coincidences.]

Serenity barely stifled a yawn as she checked the directions scribbled on a sheet of paper, wondering if her friend had been on a few types of hallucinogens when she'd written it out. All she wanted was a decent library, which she could have found closer to home, but Stacy had insisted that the Parkchester Branch public library was far better than any she'd find in Queens. Though doubtful, Serenity didn't have much else to do today other than continue unpacking – she still had numerous boxes she was tripping over – and decorating. Well, an attempt at decorating anyway; she failed at being female in that department.

What had she been mentally ranting about again? Oh yes, the apparently insane directions that were trying to lead her straight into a brick wall. That destination would have been more than a little unpleasant, so she chose the next best thing: asking directions.

Dinner

[OOC: This scene follows on from Téa and Ryou's second meeting, on the same evening (January 30th).]

After catching the bus home, Ryou decided that he still had time to change into a different shirt while he waited for the cab he'd called to arrive. (It would be nice if he could save up for a car one of these days - that might make getting around a little less complicated, right?) Once the cab was there and he was seated in the car, he gave the driver the address of his destination and sat back, looking out the window. In spite of the traffic, it wasn't too long before they reached Téa's street. Ryou paid the driver and thanked him, getting out of the car to make his way into the apartment building. Checking his watch revealed that it wasn't quite seven-thirty yet (that came as a surprise - Ryou had thought that the traffic would have made getting here on time difficult to accomplish), so he took a seat in the lobby, wondering if he should be waiting down here or outside.
