Women Still Facing Ceiling - Concrete This Time

Maybe if they didn't treat us like we were stupid, people would see women in technology have a great deal to offer.

Back in 2004, the BBC wrote that women were put off shopping for technology because they were treated as stupid.  I can report that women are at least sometimes still being treated as stupid - so much so I have resorted to shopping around online, doing research then getting husband to order.  Ya, it's that bad.

At least year's ad:tech I had a rant about how I was treated.  Poorly doesn't cover it.  LisaD also ranted about the way a certain stand's employees treated her at the same show.  Could be just us... or could be endemic of the stunning ignorance out there.

Now where I have worked in the past never suffered from this debilitating defect - possibly why all places are still in business.  As a woman I was simply rated on how well I could do my job, what I brought to the business and my ability to communicate.  I won't lie and say it was all roses - I did have to learn how to communicate in a more 'masculine' manner and I continue to keep on top of things.  One book that was and is helpful to me is "Tarzan and Jane".

Where I work at the moment is brilliant with several senior women.  That doesn't make it perfect - just nice.  It's a great place to work anyway but having senior women must help when women climb the ladder.  I hope....

Apparently part of the concrete ceiling is the inability of women to discuss the finer points of football/soccer.  I always felt that Formula 1 was a much more interesting and expensive sport to get in to and expected fewer hooligans and more respectable people at the top, thus more F1/Polo interest.  Apparently I was wrong :-)

I sympathize with women who face discrimination and know I will likely never achieve my own personal ambition because of it.  I also face discrimination from some peers who believe I have no clue.  It's sad but true and will never end.

One day maybe women and men will be 'equal' in that the unique strengths they each bring to a business will be recognised and used synergystically.  Until then, it'll continue to be a struggle.
