Tj's stays

Are finished! I did decide to do the loose lining.
Collapse )
I looked at some stays and found that the loose lining was applied after the binding, which makes sense as it was supposed to be replaceable. I noticed that it often stopped at the last bone before the eyelets. The tabs were done separately and the seam lines of the lining often didn't match those of the stays. I just cut mine in one scrap of cotton muslin, and pieced on the shoulder straps, but did the one tab in with the body.

Look for pictures of it on the intended child later once I finish his shift. (It needs to have the sleeves finished and gathered with a cord. I don;t want to hem the sleeves short as it would mean he would grow out of it sooner, this shift should fit Munchkin!

need to get moving!

Okay so I really need to get to sewing garb!
jenthompson posted her fair pics and darn if her lil boy aint adorable in the wheeled basked from world market.

I got linen/cotton for underclothes for the men in my life.
I need to strangle TJ with measuring tape and pull out my images of infants in smocks. I don't think I will do a swaddling band for this guy as he doesn't require it like Munchkin did. I have a yard of wool gaberdeen that I was thinking of using for a gown for him, but smock first. I think I will stick with brueghel for my inspiration.

check that off the list

Finished the infant regency gown. OMG so cute!
I pulled out a baby doll, about 3 month sized and dressed her in it. Gave sis-in-law a bit of a start when she came out from the shower. Munchkin of course decided to run off with the doll!
I have my sleeves sewn together, one has it's seams finished, the other still needs that. Then I will set them into the bodice.
Still need to fit the bib front of the gown. Still need to stitch the skirt panels together.
Still need to cut out mock-up of the petticoat bodice.

What has been done

SCA
I finished the buttonholes on hubby's Jerkin
Munchkins doublet is complete. Hem has been marked and is curently being put up. Then pleating the skirt to the doublet and figgureing out the closure. (eyelets?)
Munchkin's green dress could use the hem lowered an inch but it isn't bad.

Regency
Green dress is finished. 3 tucks took it up 6 inches. poly satin ribbon doesn't stay tied. But munchkin likes dressing up, so cute, he thinks he is pretty!
Infant gown half way hemed and then it is finished
Bodice fits great, now to attach sleeves
Scaled up "barely there" petticoat bodice from Arnold, need to make a mock up as I think it is too small for me?

modifying baby sleeve

How to modify the basic one piece sleeve for the mid 19th century dropped shoulder.

If you modify one you have to modify the other.

For a straight sleeve:
Lower crown 1” (same as dropped shoulder extension)
Curve sleeve cap.

For full sleeves:
Extend out top 3” on each side, square down to hem.
Curve sleeve cap.
(In Purple)

For a fitted cuff:
Mark ¼” out from cuff on hem, connect to under arm.
This line should extend 3/8” bellow the cuff line.
Square out from new cuff until it intersects the old straight cuff.
Raise the center of the old cuff 1/8”.
Connect new cuff with a curve.
(In Blue)

ladybrid, yours would be the purple, the blue is mine. I just made an adaption to Munchkin's mock up and it works very well.

Modifying baby block, take two!

Oh sometimes I am dense!
I forgot that shoulder seams are often slanted towards the back! this may not be the case on all baby's dresses, (and so few photos of the backs are available) so I need to check that out!

Anywho how to slope the shoulder seam on the bodice block. Done after dropping the armscye

Back:
measure 3/4" down the dropped armscye line. connect to neckline.

Front:
draw a line 1/2" up from the extended armscye line, not the dropped (would be green in the image.) Connect to neckline.
Divide this new shoulder line in half. measure up 1/8" and mark this point X. now make a curved line connecting the neckline, point X and the new shoulderline.
Connect the new shoulder point to the armscye with an ever so slight curve.

new lowered shoulder seam in purple

of course I need to verify this was done on toddler dresses.

oh and I found last years bodice pattern! (I have one shoulder higher than the other) now to figgure out how to modify it for maternity!
