Mal/Generic-L - How to Get Rid of It?

Question/Problem: This morning a scan with Sophos revealed that my computer is infected with the Mal/Generic-L virus. However, Sophos wasn't able to fix the problem or rid me of this infection. I need to know how I can get rid of this, i.e., is there any reliable freeware program that can do this? I hesitate to poke around in the registry as most computer forums suggest. I basically need an idiot-proof way to remove this thing.

Operating System, Version and Service Pack: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 Bit, Service Pack 1.

Web Browser and Version: I use AOL software, and AFAIK AOL uses something called "AOL Explorer". I wasn't able to find out any more details than that, sorry.

Your level of experience (we simplify or explain instructions based on how you answer): Beginner, I'd say.

When did the problem start? I first noticed it this morning, when, upon replying to a mail, windows and pop-ups suddenly began to open for no apparent reason.

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot? Scanned with Avast and Spybot (nothing found), then downloaded Sophos and scanned with that, which was the only tool that found the infection. However, removal wasn't successful - so here I am. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Programs don't work

os: Windows Vista Home Premium
browser: firefox 3.5.16
Problem has been going on for a while now. My fiance got one of the pretend virus protection viruses. (I honestly can't remember the name.) We eventually got it out following the instructions to wipe the virus online. I really don't remember the steps exactly anymore. I just remember transferring the programs we needed via a flash drive and running them under safe mode.

The problem is that now he can't run certain things that connect to the internet. His browsers work, but the downloaded versions of aim, msn, yahoo, and our substiuting program, Jobulator, don't work and some other programs. We've tried uninstalling and reinstalling and running under admin mode. None of that works. Another issue is that he's unable to update anything. Firefox can't update, and neither can Vista. He's been able to get the downloads themselves, but they refuse to install.

Do we need to do a recovery, or can we fix this? I'm not sure if he even has vista recovery disks.

Hello. My nephew has a netbook and as I've been using it, there have been so many pop-ups that it's made my head spin. I'm absolutely positive that he has several viruses and malware. Problem is, anytime I attempt to go to Avast (which I have on my own computer) or any of the other sites you all suggested on your main page for both virus protection and malware protection, the laptop won't connect me to them at all. I have no REAL problems with other sites except the ones that are credible antivirus.

So, should I attempt to use a proxy to bypass the viruses? Are there any free and credible antivirus programs for netbooks that anyone could suggest?

Absolutely anything would be appreciated. I'm at my wits end with it.

Thank you everyone for helping! I actually figured out how to solve it. I used an online proxy and linked to avast and a malware site. I really do think the viruses were blocking me from getting to them before. I was able to download the needed software for what I needed.

In case you were wondering, Avast detected over 700 security threats so I'm glad I was able to figure it out.

Again, thanks everyone for your help.

Question/Problem: Infected Computer/Difficulty in removing virus

Operating System, Version and Service Pack: Windows XP

Web Browser and Version: FireFox 3.6.3

Your level of experience: Beginner

When did the problem start? Has it been going on constantly since then? it first happened 3 months ago but i solved it and now its happening all over again.

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot? this is my last hope...
well recently my computer (a Hp, windows xp) got a virus/malware, or something. and i have three scanners (Avast, Malwarebytes, and SUPERAntispyware). This virus keeps making random pop-ups (mostly from IE). i tried Malwarebytes first to see if the scanner could remove it. but it turns out mbam.exe was removed. i googled this and found some suggested solutions. i tried all of them but none of them worked. i then ran SUPERantispyware and it would 41 effected items, i removed them and thought it worked but it didn't. i'm currently running an Avast scan (which is taking forever).

any suggestions? solutions?
or can anyone upload a mbam.exe for me?

Operating System, Version and Service Pack: Windows Vista Home Premium, SP2 (I always kept it updated)
Web Browser and Version: FireFox 3.5.7
Your level of experience: Intermediate to Seasoned I guess
When did the problem start? Has it been going on constantly since then?:
It started with a Virus. Sheur2
Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot?
"removed" the infection via AVG Antivir (freeware), but it obviously didn't work
Question/Problem: I'm sorry this might take a bit, also I have a German Vista, I try to translate everything as good as I can)
My virus scanner detected the infection Sheur2. I let the scanner put it into "quarantine! and then "deleted" it via AVG.
After that I scanned my whole system, nothing was found.
When I restarted I gut an error message "run.dll -
And suddelnly there was this pop up bubbly in the right corner of the screen saying that some "autorun/start programs had been blocked" It says it is esport2.exe But I have no idea what that is.

Now I wanted to make a system recovery, but I can't an error: (I try translation it)
"The system recovery had been disabled because of guidelines that apply to all users. Contact the domain administrator to activate system recovery"
I'm not part of any Domain.

I tried to activate the systemrecovery at Computersecurity/protection but that registry card was gone! (in system properties, sry I hope these are the english names)
The ini file which could be used to "reinstall" system recovery isn't there either. (I have windows show all files, also hidden once)
I tried to change the stats in registry so that it would show up again. No such luck

I also wanted to run a boot dvd that has virus detection programs (that one is very new and updates itself via internet before starting the scan) But I can't get it to boot from dvd.
I checked Bios... maybe I'm doing something wrong but it looks right to me. I made a "photo" of the screen, cause I can't explain how it looks.
PIC. I've also had first boot device as SATA CD and the other two disabled but still he started windows like always.

I think that's about it, sorry for the long post. (Also I tried to tag the post, don't know if I made it right)

EDIT: I think I got the virus under control now.
Also booting from dvd is working now.

The problem with systemrecovery and computer-security is still there.
But for now I'm happy the virus seems to be gone :D

Desperately need some help

Question/Problem: An annoying message keeps popping up. It says:

The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\msansspc.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

It appears when I start my computer up and when I try to access certain programs.

Operating System, Version and Service Pack: Windows XP

Your level of experience: Beginner. I know nothing about computers.

I tried running a virus scan, but it didn't detect anything. I also tried Ad-Aware, but it didn't solve the problem.

What's the best way to get rid of this?

Edit: No longer need help.

I've been hit hard

I've been hit with spyware/viruses/whichever.
I'm in safe mode right now since regular mode just freezes up now. :(
It isn't letting me open Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, & SpybotS&D.
I can still open pretty much open every other program that I have.
Is there a way to get those programs to open?

I also need your help in telling me which programs to check in the Trend Micro HiJack this. Some seem pretty obvious but I don't want to try fixing anything & messing things up further. So please help.

Help!

Hello! I am hoping that someone will be able to help me.

I did something a bit stupid and downloaded a virus, it was sent to me through FaceBook from a friend i trust - she had no idea her account had been hacked.

Anyway, i have been running AVG pretty much over and over to make sure i have got it and it seems to be a Trojan Horse SHeur 2.wln. Does anybody know what this is? I have googled it but with no joy.

I think AVG is able to sort it out but i have noticed that they have been put into a 'virus vault' does that mean they are still on my computer? How do i get rid of it completely.

Also, i have been told i should be running some sort of spyware remover or something. Is this true or is AVG enough?

I am a final year student and i am worried four years work is about to go down the toilet! Any help would be great!

Thanks!

Cute, Annoying, and Hard to Find. Help!

Hey, comm1 New member here. Running Windows XP with... service pack 2 I think? At least 2. Using Firefox 3. I'd say I'm a seasoned computer user, but mostly on how to type super fast and make good use of the internet. Not so much on the deepest inner workings like hardware or basic computer code.

But despite that, I don't know if being seasoned would help with this one.
