Mal/Generic-L - How to Get Rid of It?

Question/Problem: This morning a scan with Sophos revealed that my computer is infected with the Mal/Generic-L virus. However, Sophos wasn't able to fix the problem or rid me of this infection. I need to know how I can get rid of this, i.e., is there any reliable freeware program that can do this? I hesitate to poke around in the registry as most computer forums suggest. I basically need an idiot-proof way to remove this thing.

Operating System, Version and Service Pack: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 Bit, Service Pack 1.

Web Browser and Version: I use AOL software, and AFAIK AOL uses something called "AOL Explorer". I wasn't able to find out any more details than that, sorry.

Your level of experience (we simplify or explain instructions based on how you answer): Beginner, I'd say.

When did the problem start? I first noticed it this morning, when, upon replying to a mail, windows and pop-ups suddenly began to open for no apparent reason.

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot? Scanned with Avast and Spybot (nothing found), then downloaded Sophos and scanned with that, which was the only tool that found the infection. However, removal wasn't successful - so here I am. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recently switched to Chrome from Firefox because Firefox started crashing and freezing all the time, and I'm still getting used to the differences. I asked this over in ask_me_anything, but they didn't seem to know the answer, so I thought I'd try a computer related community. Hopefully you guys can help me out! =)

How does one go about saving a page as an MHTML file? I can find all kinds of google results that say you can do it, but none really say HOW. Do I need some sort of add on, like Firefox? Google is giving me the impression that I don't, but I could be wrong. There is no MHTML option in the save window's drop down menu. *so confused* I save web pages quite often, so it's pretty important that I figure this out. =/

I don't think the computer information form is relevant to my question, but if I should include it anyway, please let me know.

Putting Code into a Jar

Question/Problem: I have written a computer game using Java Applets and wish to put this on my website. After asking elsewhere, I learned that I needed to put the class file (the game utilizes one class file with another nested class) into a jar. I've never worked with jars before, so I looked around the internet, reading tutorials and forums. However, nothing I try works. My guess is that there's something I need to be doing that I'm not doing. Unfortunately, I don't know what it is I'm not doing, or I'd be just doing it rather than asking for help here. So...help?

Since it seems that there's a couple of different ways to make jars, let's stick with using the command window with "jar cf jar-file input-file(s)".

Operating System, Version and Service Pack: Windows XP Home Edition

Web Browser and Version: Firefox 3.5.2

Your level of experience: Beginner

When did the problem start? Has it been going on constantly since then?: N/A

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot?: N/A

If you are receiving an error message, please include the entire text of the message. (If you have an error log, please post it under a LJ-Cut):

I type in "jar cf rescueW1.jar Rescue.class" in the command window, and the command window tells me: "'jar' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file".

Thanks in advance.

ETA: SUCCESS! Turns out all I had to do was put a copy of the java file in the same directory as jar.exe and change directory in the command window to there before typing in "jar cf rescueW1.jar Rescue.java". Thanks, everyone!

First time poster, but I read the rules, so hopefully this will work!

Problem: For a project, I have to put movie clips into a powerpoint project. The guy from my school's tech desk suggested I Use Handbrake to rip clips from my dvds. I ALREADY GOOGLED INFORMATION/DIRECTIONS ON HANDBRAKE. However, after using directions, when I click START ENCODING, while the program says it encoded, I find nothing at all in the destination folder. There are other questions, but nothing matters when the encoded files disappear. HELP!

Operating System: Windows XP

Web Browser: Firefox 3.0.10

Level of Experience: Normally I'd say Intermediate, but I know nothing about movie files, so Beginner?

Thank you for help, and I'm sorry if this is a stupid question or I posted wrong or something!

Issues with calibrating tablet pressure sensitivity in Vista.

I recently purchased a laptop to replace my old desktop (a Gateway MD series notebook, operating on Windows Vista Home Premium). I've had a Wacom Intuos3 tablet for about four years now, and when it came time to re-install all of my hardware, I downloaded the most current drivers from Wacom. The tablet functions fine on the new machine. . . but I can't enable pressure sensitivity.

I've researched online, and the only relevant information I could find involved issues solely with the presure sensitivity not working in graphics programs, or with tablet PCs. I've tried going to Tablet Settings and calibrating, as I was able to do in XP. I get a message that says to "tap whenever the crosshair appears", but the crosshair remains in the left-hand corner, and the only way I can see my cursor is by tapping the tablet pen to see the ripple effects. Tapping the crosshair does nothing, and I had to manually Alt+F4 out of the application.

So, I suppose what I'm asking is this: How do you enable pressure sensitivity in Vista? I know I had to manually calibrate it in XP, and wonder if the process is the same with Vista. I've read on Wacom's website that pressure sensitivity is disabled in Windows Ink, but I can't get it to work in Photoshop 7.0, either, even though I have gone to Brushes>Shape Dynamics and activated "pen pressure".

Any help would be apreciated.

I-pod question?

I hope iPod questions are allowed. It was in the tags so I figured it's all good. If not, could someone direct me to a different community? Thank you!

Question/Problem:

My main computer completely crashed back in March. I have the newest iPod, which was synced with that computer. Since there was no way to save all this music on an outer source before it crashed, I have no back up. I got a new computer (this one, an HP laptop) and downloaded iTunes onto it. I also downloaded new music onto my new computer. When I attempted to put it onto my iPod, it told me it could not be synced with two computers at once, and if I wanted to put the new music onto it, I'd have to delete all the music currently on my iPod. So to sum it up: "How do I sync my iPod with a new computer without deleting all the music on the iPod currently?"

Operating System, Version and Service Pack:

Windows Vista Home, Service Pack1

Web Browser and Version:

Firefox 3.0.8

When did the problem start? Has it been going on constantly since then?

When I got my new computer.. so.. March. And yes, it's continual.

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot?

I've researched it many times and none of them seem to work for me. A  friend suggested that I turn on "manually manage music" under sync options, but that did nothing.

If you are receiving an error message, please include the entire text of the message. (If you have an error log, please post it under a LJ-Cut):

Are you sure you want to sync music? All exisiting content on the iPod "___  iPod" will be removed and replaced with songs and playlists from your iTunes library.

Google search help

Question/Problem:
I've been experiencing some problems with the Google search settings. I live in Italy, however I have my homepage set to the English Google. (British probably, but it doesn't matter, it only matters I'm not using the Italian one). I like to do my searches in English. Until not long ago, if I selected the word I wanted to search, right-clicked and chose "search Google for...", it would direct me to a results page in English, same as my homepage. Recently it started showing up the Google Italia page and it's annoying. I tried to understand what I should do, I blocked cookies from all Google sites but it might not be the solution/ it's not making any difference. I find it so annoying that so often and not just Google, automatically detects my IP and sets the page to the Italian version, even if I typed the specific URL for another language. Is there a way around this or am I destined to view pages in Italian even if I don't want to?

Operating System, Version and Service Pack: Mac OS 10.5.6

Web Browser and Version: Firefox 3.0.7.

When did the problem start? Has it been going on constantly since then? A week or two, and yes, constantly going on since then.

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot?

On-screen display/Power status sounds on new laptop

Question/Problem: I used to have a Lenovo R60 that I got through my university, but it was "used irresponsibly" by a roommate and got all sorts of viruses and was never the same. I decided to get a new computer (HP g60) a few days ago after the backlight burnt out. There are a few features that I am missing on this new computer that I found convenient on the Lenovo.

Is there a way to get a "chime" to sound when the AC cord is plugged/unplugged? I.e., when I pull the power dealie out of the jack, or the cat knocks the cable out of the power strip, a little chime sounds to let me know this... and the same for when you plug it back in.

Also, is there a way to get an on-screen display to show the brightness level, volume, etc? When using the keyboard shortcuts on the Lenovo, these little icons would pop up and show the volume or LCD brightness, etc.

Operating System, Version and Service Pack: Vista Home Premium SP1

Your level of experience (we simplify or explain instructions based on how you answer): Experienced? I'm not a super-geek, but I'm by no means helpless.

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot? I've tried the Help & Support and Googling, but I can't manage to figure out keywords that lead me to anything other than forum posts telling me to use the sound icon in the taskbar.  I'm open to solutions within the system itself or small, free utilities from the web.

Help me, Livejournal, you're my only hope.

How to stop MS Word asking my user name every time it opens.

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice.

I’m currently running on a four year old computer and I’m looking to improve my gaming experience. What I’d like to know is would it be better to upgrade my components in the old one, build a new one from scratch, or just buy one. I’ve done a little looking online and I’ve found a few prebuilt systems that I think would suit me just fine. I’m pretty competent with tools and putting things together, but I’ve never done anything with individual components before. I should probably mention that what I’m looking for is inspired by the Feb issue of PCGamer.

Under the cut are specs from my current comp, along with some builds offered by Dell and HP, and my minimum specs. If the prebuilts don’t match those, its either because they had a free upgrade or didn’t offer what I wanted. I’d like to not go over $1000 if possible.

Thanks in advance!
