I went to my favorite cafe today but could only get a slice of vanilla cake because they ran out of the other cake flavors and I got hassled by some old fart bible thumper on the way home, I told him to leave me alone because I'm an atheist and I saw him walk into traffic as I went inside my bldg. He probably thinks god will stop cars from hitting him. It was a short walk because the cafe is right in my neighborhood but my legs hurt so bad anyway.

Twenty years ago tomorrow, I posted on this account (on LiveJournal) for the first time.

Here was my first post:

Um, occurred to me I might introduce myself here. I'm a slash junkie. You can call me Dee. I'm mid-thirties, two young boys, and a husband who doesn't get the appeal of slash at all but is supportive if it gets him more sex. (Sometimes yes, sometimes no.)

I can only really write when the muse (mania) hits, so this journal will be a sporadic thing, I'm sure.

Current insane jealous love for: House/Wilson
Continuing attraction for: Other House, Matt & Ben, Ocean's
Started off on: X-Files
And way, way back in the day: Kirk/Spock, Three's Company

***

Well, the "sporadic" didn't happen for a few years, as 2006-2008 was an amazingly fannishly productive period of time. (2006: 111,599 words of fic in 6 months; 2007: 148,869 words; 2008: 105,707 words)

Still have the husband, the two boys (Kid the Elder and Kid the Younger, now both old enough to legally drink, though they don't), and the passion for slash.

PS. I was going to post on July 5 about my first fic, providing a DVD commentary. But I didn't. Will do it at some point.

Monday night.

I'm forgoing a couple chances to go to the movies this week out of a sense of personal responsibility. I can afford the price of the tickets, but not the time it'll take. For example, I knew tonight I could take the evening for The Master on 70mm, but with a meeting this afternoon pushing cooking lunch for tomorrow until after I'd done my writing for the day, I couldn't make it out. I don't think I can do Wednesday afternoon, either.

I'm hopeful about Thursday afternoon, though.

In reasonably positive news regarding the writing, I managed 2000 words, which is unusual enough to warrant a mention.

This was a very mixed bag of a weekend. When I tried to go to the Irish pub, two different buses refused to pick me up. I've had it with that bullshit. I'm getting Uber. Had a nice time at the pub, I had a whiskey and a very tasty charcuterie plate for lunch, then I went to Ben and Jerry's for a cone, I had double scoop butter pecan and chocolate, there was a guy in there trying to order an Oreo shake and the woman working there was absolutely so dumb she didn't know they had Oreo ice cream so I helped out, then I went to BevMo and picked up a couple of six packs of my family's beer, then while I was going to the bus stop (of the one bus that actually did their damn job and picked me up) this sex worker tried to pick me up. Ugh. The best way I could accurately describe her is if Gollum were human and female. Then I went over to my friends' house and had dinner with them (they had asked me to bring beer) and had an awesome time.
Then the next day I went to the Fillmore Jazz Festival and heard some amazing music. Saw some cool arts and crafts. The food was good but overpriced and the bus was much too crowded and my legs were killing me from too much walking and standing. People on buses are supposed to give up their seat for disabled people but nobody did that for me, they must think I just carry a cane to look cool. :( I'm so tired now!

So at the start of last month - last [community profile] fic_rush probably - I knocked out a little double-drabble Bicker for [community profile] drabble_zone as a wee test to see if I could write for this fandom. (I am SO down the rabbithole with reading fic for this fandom. But that doesn't always translate to writing stuff myself. I did a lot of movie fanfiction last year for films that I can probably count on one hand the number of other peoples fics I've read, and there are definitely fandoms I read heavily without any desire to write myself. The crossover between what I read and what I wrote in MCU was pretty minimal too...) And then, umm...the idea wouldn't leave me alone, so I figured, I'd expand it out into a fic, 1000 words of outsider POV maybe? Several weeks later and it's four times that length and a completely different fic! I mean, the bones of it are the same, but it's much more about Carter - and his feelings about both his own feelings about his friendship with Scott, hockey friendships in general and Shane & Ilya's weird not-friendship - than the original drabble was. (I spent some time down a wikipedia rabbit hole trying to get the timeline for the realworld Sochi winter Olympics right for this fic. I remember it being a shitshow of contraversy at the time but I was a bit fuzzy on what was known at the time and what came out later.)

Not Friends (Or Anything) (4065 words) by Glinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Heated Rivalry (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Shane Hollander/Ilya Rozanov, Scott Hunter & Carter Vaughn
Characters: Carter Vaughn, Scott Hunter (Game Changers), Shane Hollander, Ilya Rozanov
Additional Tags: POV Outsider, Friendship, Team Dynamics, show canon only, Institutional Discrimination
Summary: Honestly, Carter found it weirder that they weren't friends.

Here's a weird question. Is Carter a really common name in the states? Because I feel as though, a lot of shows I've been fannish about over the years have had a character called - normally as a surname but occassionally as here a first name - Carter?

(Also I'd forgotten how good this song was until it showed up on this show.)

Painted on.

The day started with planes over the Hudson and tall ships on the river, and ended with fireworks to the west and thunderstorms to the north. There's still some noises I think are explosions but could be thunder. I'm not going back up to check; I've had enough excitement for the day.

It was amazing to look and see the thunderstorm to the north, as dark as night when the rest of the sky was just in the evening. It was uncanny to see a stealth bomber, where all I could think was it looked like someone had cut a piece out of the sky. From my windows, it's night all over now. Fewer fireworks this year than others, but many more tall ships - which I think might be the way to go from here on out. But with more sunscreen next time.

Twenty years ago, I started a LiveJournal. That brought me into a new and exciting (and frustrating) world.

My first icons were pictures that Kid the Elder had taken around our house.

I created the LiveJournal for the purposes of posting a smut fic to the LJ community House_Wilson, which I did the next day, July 5. More on that tomorrow.

My thought was I'd just be posting porn (and commenting on porn). Instead, I made amazing friends, had excellent thinky-thoughts conversations, laughed a lot, and basically had the most engaging, social years of my life. And posted porn.

ETA: I ported the LJ to this DW. Thank you, DW team, for creating this platform. <3

First thing this morning the pipe to the horse pastures got fixed. No more leak.
Alyssa came up to see if there were any manzanita berries. We checked multiple bushes without finding a single berry.  I know I saw some set earlier in the year, but  there sure isn't any now.  There are little tiny, tightly closed buds for next winter's flowers though.  Looks like there will be a LOT of flowers if and when we get rain.
Glen came up to help with the water pipes up at the springs.  We walked in with a few feet of extra pipe and bypassed a very short section that was probably kinked a little.  Then we worked down the stream making sure the pipe stayed at a steady downhill angle.  1 1/4 plastic water pipe has very thick walls. The pipe in the stream has remembered the coil it had arrived in for decades. In several places we had to put rocks on top of the pipe to hold it down.  If that section keeps being a problem I'm going to replace it, perhaps after laying the pipe out in the sun and trying to get it to relax.  Our efforts paid off; now there is a really good flow of water coming down to the tanks.  I didn't get the overflow tank hooked up to the pipe leading downhill, I better get it done first thing tomorrow because the tank is filling fast!
Having water will make the cows really happy.  The overflow -trough-  is 300 gallons. The herd can drink it dry if they all arrive at the same time. Fortunately they usually arrive in small groups.  I'll also set up a trough up here at the house.
Need to can pickles...

So good to just get lost.

Thunder all over, rain coming down steady and hitting hard, lightning slashing through the clouds for just a second and you hope you're lucky enough to be looking right where it is when it comes. Standing outside, knowing you're getting wet and knowing it's okay since you can get dry later, happy it's a reprieve from the last few days' heat. Light in the west, bright light, the light at the end of a day with nothing cutting through it since everything's washed out with the rain. It's still washing out, still coming down, far from a downpour or a gullywasher and far from over.

You walked over fast to get to your building and you're heading to the park, and you stop to feel the smell all around you, and you head to the rooftop.

It's harder to see from up there with nothing between you and the sunset, not even any clouds. What clouds there are hang south of you, gentle purples, or northwards, blue-gays. Lightning wherever it wants to find itself and thunder rumbling for many long seconds after. To the east, dark clouds, heavy and ready to burst. To the west, sunlight. Not even a sunset. Fading sunlight. The occasional, incidental glimpse on the horizon of a rainstorm far away, a patch of haze on an otherwise perfectly clear view to the end of the day as the sun moves down below the horizon. No clouds, no smog, no haze. Nothing but clear sky from here to forever to get in the way of the sunlight so all you see are the colors as they fade out. A sun that's too bright to look at, that hangs behind your eyelids if you do more than glance. A sun that's still up, low in the sky, the lightning that scrawls and sprawls across the sky at the same time dazzling in its own right, but nowhere near as steady.

Dark shapes of large birds and small flying creatures, artificial shapes of large and small boats on the river. Standing out against the colors fed into the river and sky by the last of the day's sunlight as it keeps going down. Fading, gently. Finally gently to your eyes because the rainstorm knocked out everything else hanging around in the sky. There's clouds above the sun, eastward close to you, and south and north and probably far west, too, but in that strip of the sky where there's sunlight there's nothing else. Just sunlight, just the sky getting filled with the colors of sunset.

The rain doesn't stop when you leave the roof. The sun's dipped below the horizon, and it's only a matter of time now. So you might as well take the moment to say farewell.

Over the past three days the jerks who run my apt bldg have not been in the office very much which has been pretty problematic considering the rent is due. There is a mail slot thing but you can't get a receipt that way which makes it too easy for them to try to pull that bullshit where they falsely accuse people of not paying their rent. They tried that one on me some time ago, thank fuck my bank backed me up and said the checks cleared so they backed off but I know I'm not the only tenant they pulled this on. I always get a receipt. I was able to get in just under the wire day before yesterday.
Looking forward to the July 4th weekend. I'm going to my favorite Irish pub in the early afternoon, then some friends invited me over for dinner that evening. BevMo is right near the pub and is going to be open July 4th (I already talked to a guy who works there about that) so I will pick up a couple of six packs of my family's beer to bring over; one of my friends asked me to bring beer. Then Sunday I'm going to the Fillmore Jazz Festival.

The new overflow tank is now hooked up to two of three things. The big tanks now overflow into it, and it can now supply the manifold, or just the horse pastures.  It is not hooked up to the overflow water trough yet.  I have to dig the end of the pipe that feeds the trough out of the mud where the cows stomped it.
I found a leak in the horse pasture line, but not until 7 pm when I was ready to be done for the day.  Tomorrow it will get dug out a bit more and I'll mend it.
There is a lot of water up the canyon at the springs, most of which isn't making it down to the tanks. I explored some possible reasons today.   Tomorrow Glen and I will try bypassing one possible kink and replacing a section that is buried both in sand and rock and vegetation. The pipe in that stream bed was installed in about 1965 and it is amazing that it is still working at all.
Edit: Oh, and I got the fence all tuned up after I came back from town and found a cow at the tanks.  There is a proper gate and there is electric wire with all the tape sections.  When finished it metered at an 8 which should discourage any more nosy cows from pushing through it.

Bounty.

Someone moving out of my building got me another large haul of herbs and spices. I've genuinely got more cinnamon than I know what to do with. Flavored salts, also. Whole cloves. Allspice.

I took it as an opportunity to sort through what I already had in my apartment, setting a bunch aside that I don't need or want - bland red pepper flakes, old garlic powder - to compost later. There's also some old Trader Joe's ready-to-eat lentil pouches, and I figure if those were best by last year, there's no point in risking eating them when I can compost them instead.

I'm thinking spice-infused cold brew coffee, with the weather being what it is, and having enough spices to experiment a bit.
