Critically Endangered White-Rumped Vulture Returns to Cambodia Refuge After Years of Effort

A Critically-Endangered and critically important vulture species has been sighted in a Cambodian wildlife sanctuary for the first time in 10 years. After a poisoning incident decimated the local population of white-rumped vultures, there were substantial efforts made to increase the supply of habitat and food, and to reduce the chance of future poisonings. Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary surveyors spotted a white-rumped vulture this month at a "vulture restaurant" inside the sanctuary, encouraging those at NatureLife Cambodia who operate the restaurant, and conservationists working in the sanctuary.

This is exciting progress!

Also, this aspect is replicable anywhere with a vulnerable population of vultures or other scavengers:

To help not only protect the vultures from poisoning but also ensure a steady food supply during leaner times, NatureLifes operate a vulture feeding station that distributes a large carcass for the resident vultures once a month.

I tried looking up the cost of a cow, but the numbers are widely scattered from around $1,000 to $5,000. If shopping for vulture food, a low-quality animal could be purchased and dispatched at the feeding site. This seems like a feasible expense for at least some wildlife or nature organizations. You could also ask around to see if anyone wishes to dispose of large animals near the end of their lifespan, which would cost little or nothing.

Alternatively, hunting licenses for deer are much cheaper. If you have hunters, you could just drop a lesser-quality deer and leave it. This is very convenient anywhere deer are overpopulated due to humans wiping out most large predators and then turning too squeamish to do the job themselves. It would also be a great way to dispose of invasive and destructive species, like the wild pigs in parts of the West.

Furthermore one could place several blinds around the feeding site and charge a modest rental fee for scientists wishing to study scavengers, nature artists wishing to paint them, etc.
