Endangered California Condor Flies into Oregon for the First Time in 122 Years

Last month, a California condor flew into Oregon before returning after several hundred miles to its home in Redwoods National Park, becoming the first condor recorded in the state since 1904.

Taking a closer look, condor conservationists among northern California’s Yurok tribe concluded it was condor B9, an animal that had been born in captivity and released into the wild in 2022 by the Yurok.

The animal flew a grand total of 380 miles and 4 days in a loop, starting high in the redwoods before passing Redding in NoCal and then entering Oregon. It made stops near Medford, Cave Junction, and Brookings before recrossing state lines and returning to the national park

That's good progress. \o/

Today is sunny and cool.  It rained again yesterday.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 4/5/26 -- I planted a gold curly willow in the savanna.

EDIT 4/5/26 -- I planted a red curly willow in the savanna.

I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, a male cardinal, and a fox squirrel.  I also spotted a turkey vulture soaring low over the yard, just above the treetops.  :D

The honeybees are to-ing and fro-ing at the bee tree. \o/

EDIT 4/5/26 -- I planted the last of the gold curly willow in the savanna.

EDIT 4/5/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 4/5/26 -- I sowed 'Lovely Lettuce Mesclun Blend' lettuce, 'Choko Baby' pak choi, and 'Thumbelina Baby Ball' carrots in troughs on the new picnic table garden.

EDIT 4/5/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I am done for the night.

Generations of Bearded Vultures Stashed Humans’ Treasures, Including a 650-Year-Old Sandal, in These Bird Nests

Bearded vultures are unusual birds. Their diet consists primarily of bones, which they sometimes drop from great heights to break into smaller, bite-size pieces. They deliberately change the color of their plumage by rolling around in reddish-orange mud. And they return to the same nesting sites year after year, with generations of the species even reusing nests for centuries.

Today is sunny.

I took the flats of pots outside and watered them.

I've seen two starlings, a mourning dove, and a blue jay in the forest garden.  Two vultures flew overhead and landed in the tall trees.  :D

EDIT 4/28/25 -- I fed the birds.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 4/28/25 -- We walked around the south lot to decide where to mow a path.  Now my partner Doug is out mowing.

EDIT 4/28/25 -- We walked around the south lot to see what had been mowed.  Yay, progress!

EDIT 4/28/25 -- I planted a peppermint in the strip garden, a catnip in the cistern garden, a pineapple mint and a rosemary in a trough pot on the old picnic table.

EDIT 4/28/25 -- I planted the 'Ohio Treasure' black rraspberry in the patch at the edge of the prairie garden.  This concludes the Edible Landscaping order.

EDIT 4/28/25 -- I planted hepatica and Jack-in-the-pulpit, each 2 in the forest garden and 1 in the streetside forest yard where the trilliums are growing.

EDIT 4/28/25 -- I planted Dutchman's breeches, bloodroot, and white trillium, each 2 in the forest garden and 1 in the streetside forest yard where the trilliums are growing.  This concludes the American Meadows order.

EDIT 4/28/25 -- I planted Dutchman's breechesbloodroot, and white trillium, each 2 in the forest garden and 1 in the streetside forest yard where the trilliums are growing.  This concludes the American Meadows order.

EDIT 4/28/25 -- I raked the mowed north-south path that is second in from the west in the prairie garden and connects with the east-west flower path.  Last year this north-south path was sown with wildflowers, this time I put Little Bluestem grass seed.

EDIT 4/28/25 -- I raked the mowed north-south path that is farther west in the prairie garden, sowed it with 20th anniversary wildflower seed mix plus extra zinnia seeds from the Charleston food forest, and watered it. I raked the mowed east-west path and sowed it with Monarch Butterfly Wildflower Seed Mix plus extra zinnia seeds, and watered it.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

Today we went out to the lake. These pictures primarily show the pollinator gardens around the parking lot and the approach to the lake paths.
