So I have a bootleg of Wicked! and have sort of read the first book, and plot points of the second.

I do not like the books (sorry folks) but loved the musical. So, this year I bought the movie 2 pack.

Folks, I thought I couldn't love anything more than the stage production. I was WRONG. I love the additions, the expansion on characters, and OH MY GOD they went there!

I got Mr. Smith Goes to Washington out of the library to rewatch and grab screenshots for potential future icons. Now I am rewatching it obsessively, I don't even know. I do love Claude Rains and find his character the most interesting in the movie (though Jimmy Stewart and Jean Arthur are great, too!)

I'm also watching the second season of Daredevil Born Again for the first time (so don't spoil me). So far it's good but I wouldn't say I love it.

I'm reading David Sheff's Yoko Ono biography. A lot of it I already know, but a lot of it is new and the perspective is new.

I am also reading a Nero Wolfe mystery novel by Rex Stout, The Golden Spiders. I'm sure I've written about Nero Wolfe mystery books before - my father read them to my mother and sister and me when I was younger. Unfortunately he doesn't know what he did with his collection so I've had to get them from the library or buy them myself. I've just started The Golden Spiders but so far it is quite funny and engaging.

JOYCE: Uh, Buffy assures me that it happened battling evil, so I'm letting her pay for it on the installment plan.
BUFFY: Uh, hey, the way things were going, be glad that's the worst that happened. At least I got to the two of you before you actually *did* something.
JOYCE: Right.
GILES: Indeed.

I mostly post about:
life updates, fannish things, current reads or book reviews if I’m feeling up to it, random musings, my sweet little dog, my writing process and its longstanding rival: Writers Block. Oh yeah; might also have a bit of a giggle at life’s annoyances. I try to keep things light, but I’ll be serious when needs must -- I don’t always have the sun shining out my yeah. Mental health is an important topic for me, too.

My hobbies/interests are: writing, reading, music, thinking, fanfiction, greek mythology, poetry, etc. I don’t really play video games but I’ve a fair idea about most; Resident Evil, Dead by Daylight, Minecraft, Stardew Valley, to name a few.

My fandoms are: Stranger Things, Welcome to Night Vale, Dead Poets Society, Percy Jackson, Twilight, stuff… (my memory is SO fickle but I’m sure I have more)

I'm looking to meet people:
from all walks of life as long as you are kind and have a heart. Just people to coexist with, like huddling in the grass while experiencing life :-) Shared interests are amazing but not very necessary. I read just about anything.

My posting schedule tends to be:
erratic. I’ve been on DW for years and I’m only just getting back now after Life with a capital L happened. Alas, this is the part where I say, “Guess who’s back?”

When I add people, my DEALBREAKERS are: the usual. Homophobes, racists, anyone who puts their opinions above basic human rights, anyone who uses gen-ai in creative spaces, anti-feminists, all sorts of discrimination, etc etc.

Before adding me, you should know: I am very passionate about writing and everything fannish. I like writing about people being loved right, kissed right, and fucked right. I love love in all its forms and glory, irrespective of gender. I think love is beautiful and everyone deserves to be loved not just well but properly.

Asked by [personal profile] author_by_night: Do you have any unpopular opinions or hot takes about Buffy?

*cracks knuckles*

My unpopular opinions and hot takes on BTVS. )

That's all I can think of at the moment, but believe me, I have plenty of thoughts and opinions (unpopular or not) regarding Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I adore the show, and over the years have gathered a lot of feelings about certain things.

* What is your first memory?

When I was five/six, I had measles. I was so sick with a high fever. Every night when my dad came home from work, he would sit by my bed for half an hour. But this one night, he was later than usual. When he came in, he had a surprise for me. It was a nun-doll. Such a good little Catholic I was. My dad didn't give gifts because we were very poor. But he told me later in life that the nuns at the church found out I was ill and sent it with him. They didn't want me to know that it was from them. Oh, my mom yelled at him because no one else got a toy. I felt like it was my fault that they were arguing. But mostly it was a wonderful memory.

* What was your favorite TV show when you were little? Why did you love it?

Bonanza, Wagon Train, and Rawhide. I watched all three with my dad each week. I loved my dad so much, and loved spending time with him. So it wasn't just the shows. It was the closeness.

9.    It’s World Misophonia Day. A person with this disorder has decreased tolerance for certain sounds as well as the stimuli that accompany those sounds (for example, loud chewing).  Someone with the condition will experience feelings of distress, which may overwhelm them.  Are there any sounds that you find irritating, even if you don’t suffer from this condition?

I think I have this condition. If hubby slurps his soup, I have a nervous breakdown about hearing this. It's real.

10.    When you eat thick-cut chips/French fries, do you add a sauce such as ketchup or mayonnaise, or do you prefer a condiment like vinegar or lemon with them?

I likes a my fries all by themselves. I love good fries.

I haven't posted in a while, but want to let you know I had two radiation treatments this week. Next week I will have 3 more. They told me I would probably have some side effects, but so far, so good. July 17th is my last treatment and three months later I have a CT Scan to see if it worked. Fingers crossed. I have to have Scan every three months for 5 years. Just being careful, I guess.

Reading journal for July 8 2026

What I’ve Read

OK, look, I read nothing to completion this week. I got sucked into a deeply unhinged Chinese boy love drama and I rode that till the wheels came off! And I’d do it again! Subtitles take up a similar level of eye strain as reading a book!

So here’s my review of that:
Revenged Love (2025) is a gay (BL) Chinese language drama that focuses on a young man who gets dumped by his girlfriend and decides to seduce the rich man she replaces him with. The story starts out with magnificent levels of plotting and scheming, and gradually shifts from a story about manipulating people to get what you want to a story about knowing people deeply and loving them with your whole heart. The young revenger falls, and falls HARD, for the rich young man that his girlfriend replaced him with, and it’s a great set of performances from these two. It’s comic and goofy and heartfelt. It also involves someone having a deep care for his pet snakes – a thing that I find fairly rare in TV!

The whole series can be watched in Mandarin with English subtitles on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlCSMHgOKbE&list=PLiCVOcxScfwh-Gkl0A0SeugdHQUg4QZIu
Trigger warnings for: suicide attempts, self destructive behavior of several kinds, tossing a twink to a gang, OODLES of manipulative behavior, LOTS OF SNAKES

What I’m Reading

I have abandoned the sheep book – I had too little time left on the audiobook to finish and after I found out the reason for the murder, I lost interest.

Shroud – Adrian Tchaikovsky – about 85%

逆袭 - 柴鸡蛋 | Counterattack - Chai Jidan – the English language translation of the novel that is the basis for Revenged Love. It’s absurd and very, very funny.

(this is probably wrong because i avoid vkei twitter like the plague and don't use tiktok at all, but it's my experience from places like tumblr/pinterest/reddit/fan forums/ao3)

Type One: Malice Mizer-Heads and Adjacents:

- Their first vkei band is Malice Mizer, and it's usually their main love, but a lot of them do branch out into adjacent tanbi kei or more (relatively) chill kote kei bands over time.
- Wind up saying a lot of ignorant things, but generally very willing and eager to learn when corrected.
- Also usually into nostalgia for late-90s-2000s Japanese Goth Culture ("old-school lolita", "gothic" manga from that era", etc)
- The most likely out of all of these groups to write fanfiction/draw fanart/do "Transformative Fandom" stuff.

Type Two: The Menhera Kei Crowd:

- As the name suggests, fans of "menhera kei" bands (Kaneto Juusei, gulu gulu/I to Rito no Musuzokyu, Senketsu Ako-chan and Mamireta are the big ones)
- Wind up saying a lot of ignorant things, but in my personal experience, are more likely to get defensive and dig their heels in when corrected.
- Typically precisely as menhera as their faves are, which results in a lot of unfiltered social media crashouts, dumb callout posts, freakouts once they realize what their favorite songs are about, the whole shebang.
- At least they tend to make some pretty funny memes.

Type Three: The Honorary Oldhead

- Their natural habitat is the fandoms for okeshou/proto-visual/kurofuku kei bands (X Japan, Buck-Tick, I've seen them into Luna Sea, Soft Ballet, and Der Zibet, as well)
- Typically very chill, they like to do their research and reading and enjoy digging around old fansites.
- A lot of them wind up becoming Walking Encyclopedias of their Favorite Guy, which is very cute and endearing behavior.
- Some of them are obviously Very Young, but for quite a few of them you'll be chatting about stuff and then they offhandedly mention they're like 15 and you're like "what the fuck, what the fuck, you did not give off that vibe at all."

I found a bottle of "Don't Wine - Yukon Do It!" from OPI's fall 2004 Canadian Collection in a big bag of miscellaneous nail polishes at Goodwill. It's a really beautiful color. The base is a dark purple-y red and it's full of bright pink shimmer in direct light. One of those elevated reds that were so popular in the 1990s-200s. It's hard to photograph but here's the best photo of the pink shimmer I could get:

(Ignore the slight bald spot on my thumb. Most vintage nail polishes are thinner than modern ones so things like that are inevitable :P)

Gotten to late May of 2007 and it's vaguely unsettling feeling the effects of Strikethrough without any actual mention of what we now know was Strikethrough. "Because of the rumors about journals getting deleted, I'm friendslocking all of my fic." "I wanted this fic to be fluffier, but because of the thing with LJ, it turned out kind of angsty, sorry." Seeing that the last captures made of one particular BNF's fics to the Wayback Machine were all made in late May/early June of 2007.

That last one kind of gets me, honestly. It's just this sort of uncanny feeling of like, being so close to another fan who also cares deeply about preserving the things they love, and being able to guess at what they were feeling and that their feelings were similar to mine in a way. I want to make sure that this is safe so that LiveJournal won't be able to take it away from me. I understand. I understand, my fellow Committer of RPF Crimes. I'm pressing my hand in your fossilized handprint right now, in my mind.

Hella interesting post from August 2007 asking the comm a bunch of questions about their favorite pairings, including who the seme and uke are, why the seme and uke are the seme and uke, and if you could see them switching. The answers are fascinating.

Why do you think [the seme and uke are the seme and uke]? Reasoning?

"All depends on the personality. In short, as others have wrote, it should really be clear by that as to who's seme and who is uke."

"classic rules on yaoi; seme mention before uke, seme is older and taller than uke, and (usually) have darker hair than uke.>>> read it somewhere on mags ^.~"

(explaining why they ship switch) "Well they all have the same parts, and they're all men, therefore all with the same needs. It's a give-take relationship; sometimes one gives, sometimes takes."

"I don't believe in the seme/uke roles because it's not realistic that one would always top and one would always bottom. I only use Dominant/submissive roles when I write about BDSM relationships where it's natural."

"Well, generally I don't have an iron-set roles for people... Though, granted, some people just don't work as ukes/semes."

"I don't believe in strict uke/seme roles unless it's within the context of a BSDM relationship. In my fics they always switch, and I tend to prefer reading fids where they switch, too."

Is there a change [sic] for turning tables? Why shouldn't uke turn into seme for a while?

"They can, but they always seem to return to the original way afterwards. ^^"

"There are some I might take into consideration when playing with both roles however there are concrete pairings where I prefer one party be submissive throughout the relationship."

"honestly, personally, i dont like if uke turn into seme." [sic]

"I view 'uke' and 'seme' as simply a way to describe who's being fucked and who's fucking, not a concrete role."

"I prefer they do. I think in terms of a real relationship equality is a big part and not all men, especially in couples like KaoruxKyo, would want to bottom constantly. Even uke's [sic] need a power trip once in awhile."

"Honestly, I'd define any relationship in which the tables never turn as kind of abusive and think that the top was being pretty selfish."

"I love it when the "obvious" uke tops XD" (you and me both buster)

"Oh yes. I love when it's a fight for top. XD it's almost always amusing."
