Name:
Named in 1837 by Moritz Christian Julius Thaulow in honor of Charles Louis Boulanger (6 May 1810 - 6 October 1849), a French mining engineer. Boulanger first analyzed his namesake species calling it "plomb antimonie sulfure" in 1835. He also translated Leopold von Buch's famous book, "Description physique des Iles Canaries, suivie dʾune indication des principaux volcans du globe", which was a contributing factor in the decline of the Wernerian or Neptunian theory of the origin of the Earth.
Type Locality:
Easily confused with jamesonite.
Homeotype of lopatkaite.
May occur in intergrowths with jamesonite and meneghinite.
Boulangerite has an OD structure with the following MDO polytypes (Ventruti et al., 2012):
- MDO1 with space group P121/a1 and unit-cell parameters a1 ≈ 21.61, b1 ≈ 23.54, c1 ≈ 8.05 Å, β1 ≈ 100.7°
- MDO2 with space group P21/n11 and unit-cell parameters a2 ≈ 21.24, b2 ≈ 23.54, c2 ≈ 8.05 Å, α2 ≈ 90°
Schultz et al. (2017) explain the many contradictory structure models of boulangerite (both natural and synthetic) and the related mineral falkmanite by a phase transition between a low‐temperature (LT) modification (P21/c, a ≈ 8.07 Å, b ≈ 23.5 Å, c ≈ 21.6 Å, β ≈ 100.7°) and a disordered high‐temperature (HT) modification [Pnma, a = 23.530(2) Å; b = 4.0385(8) Å and c = 21.273(2) Å, with cation disorder] that occurs above ca. 350–400 °C.
There are interconnected SbS3 groups in the structure as, e.g., in jamesonite, robinsonite, and zinkenite.
Homeotype of lopatkaite.
