Name:
Named in honor of Ove Balthasar Bøggild (1872–1956), Danish geologist, mineralogist and crystallographer.

Ove Balthasar Bøggild was born on May 16, 1872 in Jetsmark (Jutland, Denmark). He studied in Aalborg from 1890 to 1896. That year he became assistant at the Museum of Minerals, and in 1904 associate professor of geology and mineralogy at the Polyteknisk Læreanstalt in Copenhagen (Denmark). After Niels Viggo Ussing passed away in 1912, he was appointed professor of mineralogy at the University of Copenhagen and Director of the Museum of Minerals, until his retirement in 1942.

The description of the minerals of Greenland, including several new ones, was an important part of his scientific work. His magnum opus is Mineralogia groenlandica, published in 1905. An extended and updated edition of this work, entitled "The Mineralogy of Greenland", was published in English in 1953. Ove Bøggild passed away on November 13, 1956 in Copenhagen.
