Named in 1845 by Alexander Löwe in honour of Johann Rudolf Ritter von Gersdorff [March 18, 1781, Bochnia, Galicia, Poland – April 30, 1849, Vienna, Austria], mining expert and owner of the nickel mine at Schladming (ca. 1842). With the description of three polymorphs in 1982 by Bayliss, the name was changed to gersdorffite-P213. It was renamed back to simply gersdorffite by the IMA in 2022.
