Mythic! Epic!
Hey flist - how goes it?
So I have a question to ask you all - a favour, really:
have you seen any fanfiction with references to myths in them recently?
You know, in the midst of some slashy scene, someone is referred to as looking like Adonis with his shirt off. Or if someone references a sword of Damocles hanging over their heads. The Oedipal complex. Someone acts like a PMSing Kali?
I can give audiobooks in return! Or music! E-cookies!

*insert mad laughter here*
Oh boy. I did not need a new fandom. But I got one!
I'm going to be president of the Sci-Fi Fantasy club at school next year, and out of a keen awareness of my lack of nerd cred in the area of Star Trek, I have begun watching that genius show, starting with the first episode of the original series.
Slash devotee that I am, I am also playing homage to the early formation of slash fandom and the Kirk/Spock pairing. Yet indecisive, lascivious creature that I am, I've decided that Spock/Kirk/McCoy and any combination thereof is perfectly delicious.
It is spring. That is the time of cherry blossoms, and cheesy lines such as "you're like a May morning". I am therefore plunging myself back into medieval lore, and nearly rolling around in it.
Thus, an audiobook! for your enjoyment!
1215: The Year of Magna Carta - the link is at the bottom of the page
The book itself is brilliant, reminiscent of "A Distant Mirror". The narrator is Cornelius Garrett, who played Thomas of Elsdon in "Robin of Sherwood". And if you ever doubted the casting abilities of the RoS folks, your faith will be restored. He's reading a non-fiction book, but I dare you to unhook from your headphones after 10 minutes!

Want to get back
I want to get back on LJ. There are people here that I just can't ever seem to contact outside of LJ.
COME ON, WOMAN! YOU CAN DO THIS!
COME ON, WOMAN! YOU CAN DO THIS!
One true ship...
Look, I know it's not the best vid in the world, but it's the best Doctor/Master vid to this song that I could find. And it's such a perfect Doctor/Master song. And ignore the stupid intro bit...
"The Secret of Kells"
I recommend a lot of stupid things when carried away by various passions. But this movie is a banquet for your eyes. Watch it.
You've all heard of the Book of Kells? It's a famous illuminated text of the four Gospels which was probably started in a monastery on the island of Iona. In 806, after devastating Viking attacks, the monks moved to Kells in County Meath, whence the book gets its name. It is gorgeous. I saw it on display at Trinity College a few years ago, and you feel like you could fall into the book, the detail's so immense.
Anyway, this is a fictional retelling of the story of the Book of Kells, involving a charming young protagonist, Brendan, whose overprotective uncle, the Abbot of Kells, keeps him within the monastery's walls. But when a refugee from Iona comes to Kells bearing the book, he inspires Brendan to aspire to being an illuminator and, more importantly, to venture outside the monastery walls. There, he meets Aisling (Eng. Ashley, Ashleigh, etc.)...
And I shan't tell you any more. Because a picture is worth a thousand words and a trailer, necessarily, is worth even more.

The Deadliest Warrior
This show is so stupid amazing. Now to be honest, I can't really approve of their methods all of the time, but is it entertaining beyond belief? You betcha.
This is your gatewaydrug episode:

Viking vs. Samurai
Recommended: Shaolin Monk vs. Maori Warrior
Green Beret vs. Spetsnaz
Watch it.
