Extra Link

An Extra Link (Japanese: エクストラリンク, Ekusutora Rinku) is a series of co-linked Link Monsters that includes Link Monsters in both Extra Monster Zones. If Link Summoning a Link Monster to an Extra Monster Zone would create an Extra Link, the player can do so even if they already control a monster in the other Extra Monster Zone—this is the only way for a player to control monsters in both Extra Monster Zones simultaneously.

The only TCG/OCG cards whose effects depend on Extra Linking are Match winner Link Monsters and "Topologic Gumblar Dragon".

MechanicsEdit

If there is a series of co-linked Link Monsters that includes Link Monsters in both Extra Monster Zones, all of those co-linked Link Monsters are considered to be Extra Linked. Additionally, any monster co-linked to an Extra Linked monster is also Extra Linked. An Extra Link is formed regardless of which player controls the monsters (including the monsters in the Extra Monster Zones).

If Link Summoning a Link Monster to an Extra Monster Zone would create an Extra Link, the player can do so even if they already control a monster in the other Extra Monster Zone; this is the only way for a player to control monsters in both Extra Monster Zones simultaneously. This can be used to prevent the opponent from Special Summoning monsters to the Extra Monster Zones.

The player can even shut out the opponent from Special Summoning any Link Monsters if the Extra Link was formed completely by their own monsters, and the two Extra Monster Zone monsters do not have any forward-facing Link Arrows.

Creating an Extra LinkEdit

An Extra Link is usually depicted as five co-linked Link Monsters: three monsters in the Main Monster Zones and two in the Extra Monster Zones. The player can create an Extra Link even if the opponent controls one or both Extra Monster Zones. This type of link, especially one formed entirely by their own Monsters, is colloquially called a U-Link.

It is possible to create an Extra Link using fewer than five monsters by co-linking diagonally; they are colloquially called V-Links. [1] However, few Link Monsters have the necessary pairs of Link Arrows to form a 3-card Extra Link (Top-Left and Top-Right) or 4-card Extra Link (Top-Left and Middle-Right, or Top-Right and Middle-Left). Furthermore, for those with the necessary pairs, almost all also have a condition that the player cannot Summon/Set monsters to any Extra Monster Zone this card points to. The rarity and restrictions prevents players from controlling both Extra Monster Zones and shutting the opponent out from Summoning Link Monsters using less than five co-linked Monsters.

A player can create a V-Link using only two of their Monsters if one of their opponent's Monsters are in the Extra Monster Zone, but if the aforementioned condition applies, the first of their two Monsters must be placed in the Extra Monster Zone. If the opponent controls both Extra Monster Zones, the player can create a V-Link using only one of their Monsters. A U-Link created that controls both Extra Monster Zones can be reduced to a V-Link provided that the remaining monsters remain co-linked.

As of December 2025, only two Monsters allow one to create a V-Link and control both Extra Monster Zones without first creating a U-Link and shutting out your opponent from Summoning Link Monsters: "Firewall Dragon Singularity" (Link-6, supports 3-card Extra Links) and "Enlilgirsu, the Orcust Mekk-Knight" (Link 4, supports only 4-card Extra Links).

AnimeEdit

In the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime, Varis,[2] Playmaker,[3] Lightning,[4] and Spectre[5] have all performed an Extra Link. In particular, Lightning pulled it off using the Link Spell Card "Judgment Arrows", while Spectre performed an Extra Link consisting of seven monsters, which he dubbed "Ultimate Extra Link" ("Extra Link Full Mode" in the Japanese version).
