Program Notes

This is a gentle piece to honor a young student who selflessly served her community during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is generally quiet and peaceful, reflecting her care for others, but grows strong, revealing her profound impact. A touching tribute to a remarkable girl's legacy and a celebration of her life through heartfelt music.

- Program Note from publisher

As I’ve stated in previous instances, writing music to honor the memory of a departed child is never an easy task. To the Munday High School Band, the community of Munday, and the family and friends of Lexi Collins, this work comes with sincere condolences and a heavy heart. Lexi will be forever remembered for courageously and selflessly serving her community as an assistant to health-care workers during the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak.

To this, Turquoise is a modest, loving tribute to a vibrant and remarkably civic-minded young lady. The piece is gentle and soft for the large part, typifying a deep and sincere concern for the well-being of others. The music then becomes quite strong, as we become gradually aware and stand in awe of the great impact one little girl had on her community. Toward the end, we’re once again reminded of the sweet spirit that blessed us all.

As to the title of the work, turquoise was Lexi’s favorite color.
