Argentine composer and bandoneon virtuoso Astor Piazzolla added new dimension to the traditional tango with his use of jazz elements, extended harmonies, and dissonance. His distinctive composition Street Tango is beautifully adapted here for band with its variety in textures, tempos, and almost improvisatory nature. A vibrant and appealing work for the concert stage.

Street Tango was included on the album The Rough Dancer and the Cyclical Night. The complete project, recorded by Piazzolla’s own Quinteto Tango Nuevo, was released in 1989 and then re-issued in the late 1990s. The album features a suite of music commissioned by Intar [sic] Hispanic American Arts Center for its stage production Tango Apasionado, which traces the tango’s development from its
Bueno Aires roots to modern times. Though gifted arranger Robert Longfield has adapted Street Tango for concert band, the essence of Piazzolla’s artistry and craftsmanship remains fully intact.
