Program Notes
This exciting opener by Jack Wilds is brimming with energy as the main motive bursts onto the scene. Written to honor a teacher's legacy, the piece uses colorful orchestration, active percussion writing, and creative motivic development to portray the endless ripple effect generated by a single master teacher.
- Program Note from publisher
Ripple Effect was commissioned by Diane Gorzycki Middle School in honor of its namesake, a middle school band director whole legacy as a teacher and leader in the profession has had a profound impact on the Asustin area band directing community and the state of Texas writ large.
Diane passed away in 2008. This piece was commissioned 15 years later, which allowed me to write from a unique perspective. I was able to see that Diane's wisdom and energy continues to live on in the man teachers and students that she dedicated her career to, and the resulting piece pays tribute to the ripple effect that she created.
The piece begins with an energetic motive bursting onto the scene in the woodwind section. As it develops, the motive takes shape into a full, joyous melodic line. As I was writing, I was thinking of this melody as the "Diane" melody, and it was meant to convey a sense of her demeanor, which was always described as upbeat and enthusiastic.
In the middle portion, pieces of the melody are passed between different sections. This portrays the many people influenced by Diane taking on the knowledge she imparted and making it their own. Eventually, the piece concludes with a final, mostly unison recap of the Diane melody, symbolizing all of her colleagues joining in.
It was an absolute honor to be able to pay tribute to Diane with this work. This piece is dedicated to her memory with my deepest gratitude to Suzanne Glaser for the opportunity to work with her and the students of Gorzycki Middle School.
