Program Notes

This work is scored for wind ensemble and is titled Remembering because it deals with concepts of memory. Specifically, this work explores how the context of memories plays a role in consciousness. When a baby is born everything is new and without context. As the mind grows and experiences recur, the baby begins to recognize repeated experiences as their memories are formed. Eventually, not only is a memory recognized, but the context of that memory is recognized – connections are made, and the world begins to make sense. This is one of the first signs of consciousness in human development and typically happens around five months of age. As one is able to connect a memory to a context and understand their relationship to it, then they are able to connect experiences across longer periods of time and from different settings.

This work evolves in the way a baby’s consciousness evolves over time. At first, there are fragments of sounds and melody that might seem confusing or out of place, but as the piece progresses the fragments are pieced together to create a cohesive experience that makes sense. One might imagine that the wind ensemble is someone having as a series of experiences that are slowly pieced together to create an identity that is finally able to be expressed at the end of the work.
