Program Notes

This monumental work by Leoncavallo comes from the final section of the first act of the opera, Pagliacci. In this piece, the character Canio laments that he must go ahead with his evening performance and play the clown while his heart is breaking after discovering his wife has been in a love affair. From the debut performance of this opera, it has consistently endured as one of the most popular operas in the repertoire.

- Program Note by TJ Anderson for the Appalachian State University Wind Ensemble concert program, 18 February 2022

Ruggiero Leoncavallo, both composer and librettist, based Pagliacci on real-life events he recalled from childhood. From these he fashioned a vivid musical play with intense passions build in the lives of a troupe of commedia dell'arte players until they explode into a horrifying double murder. Recitar! Vesti la giubba is the final section of the first act. From the first, audiences have loved Pagliacci and it remains today one of the most enduringly popular of all operas.
