Program Notes

Pageant Overture was first published in 1963 and dedicated to Frederick Fennell, conductor of the Eastman Wind Ensemble at the time. The overture is written in a fast-slow-fast form with some broadening of the tempo near the end. Although dissonant chords abound in the quicker sections, the Andante near the middle begins with a flowing melody and sustained tonal accompaniment. The same thematic material is developed in a variety of ways before the second Allegro recapitulates the opening material a whole step lower, drops dynamically to a whisper near the end, then crescendos to a powerful fortissimo with the lower brass repeating the same fast three-note motif heard at the very beginning.
