Program Notes

High Plains has the standard Da Capo march form. The middle section is not in the usual subdominant -- but in the dominant key. The contrasting theme of the middle section functions as a counterpoint to the main theme; the secondary thematic material is the same; hence the monolithic character of the march.

High Plains was commissioned by the Kansas Music Merchants to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the High Plains Band Camp and to honor its founder-director, H.G.Palmer, Fort Hays Kansas State College, Hays, Kansas.
