Giovanni Orsomando
Biography
Giovanni Orsomando (29 December 1895, Casapulla, Italy - 26 September 1988, Rome) was an Italian composer and band director.
Orsomando was the son of Salvatore Orsomando and Fortunata Baia. In his childhood, he was introduced by his father to the clarinet, on which he became a virtuoso. As an army officer, he was solo clarinet in the infantry band. After graduating in 1922 in composition and instrumentation for band from the Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella in Naples, where he had among his teachers Francesco Cilèa, Camillo de Nardis and Raffaele Caravaglios, he obtained his first success with the concert march Annina, dedicated to his wife.
He spent most of his life in Caserta and Lavello conducting bands, teaching and composing. He was conductor of the band of the Province of Rome, and in his final moments he moved to live in the capital. (He also conducted, for a short period, the band of Soriano nel Cimino, in the province of Viterbo in which traces of his military march Nanetta can still be found).
Among his works (more than 120 compositions), a lot of them can still be found in the repertoire of important Italian bands, military and civilian.
Orsomando was among the most important maestros and wind composers in Italy. In addition, he was the father of the famous announcer Nicoletta Orsomando, who worked in RAI from 1953 to 1993.
