Program Notes
Árpád Balázs's true creative field are that of choral music and wind ensembles. It is interesting that the stylistic features of these two related musical fields are united. In it the wind instruments sing! It was not by chance that the expansive second movement was given the title Cantilena, while the slightly livelier but just as lyrical third movement was entitled Arietta. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic Induló (March), but not one of the rigidly military kind: the 6/8 rhythm contributes to its light-hearted character.
- Program Note from publisher
This interesting composition featuring four short character pieces is ideal for showcasing a developing band’s growing musicianship. The first piece, Indulo (March), is scored in time with effective dynamic contrasts and jolly, energetic lines that offer the impression of a Prokofiev ballet. The expressive Cantilena features the upper woodwinds with occasional brief contributions from the brass. The animated Arietta is more lyrical with flowing, emotional lines. The final Jatek (Game) is playful and more technically demanding with a somewhat unexpected soft ending.
