Program Notes

Exclamations is written in a traditional ABA overture form, exploring the possibilities found in a four-note theme (motive) expressed at the beginning of the composition. Throughout the piece the intervalic relationship of these four notes is used to lend a degree of cohesiveness to the composition. Syncopated rhythmic figures allow for variety and a sense of uniqueness which is characteristic of the composer's music. Even in the Andante (slow) section, the same four-note motive is used as the foundation for the lyrical melodic lines. After the return of the original (fast) section, Exclamations comes to a rousing conclusion, emphasizing the four-note motive upon which the composition is built.
