Program Notes

Bagatelles is a collection of pieces from different sources of mine. Played complete, it lasts about twenty-eight minutes. But some movements could be performed in isolation, while other shorter suites could be put together for performance. Two movements that might cause problems for audiences can be left out from an otherwise complete performance. They are Serial Beethoven and Soliloquy.

Much of the humour of the Beethoven spoof will be lost on an audience unfamiliar with Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony, while the text associated with Soliloquy might prove offensive to some, being taken from Psalm 109. This is actually an aria from my opera Dracula, which has never been performed, apart from a CD recording. As I consider it the most powerful part of the opera, I decided to include it here as well. If left out, the Introduction could still be played before cutting to the tarantella Whirlwind.
