Biography
Horace was born in Mudgee, NSW, in 1888. His father was Wiliiam Iden Oxley. Horace's father was a master saddler who travelled around the Central West repairing saddles and leather items. William died near suddenly Canowindra while repairing items at a farm. He complained of chest pains and was taken inside the farmhouse to lie down but he soon passed away.
Horace's grandfather, Owen, was born in Benenden in Kent, England and came out with his parents, William Oxley and Eliza Santer when he was a small boy in 1839.
Horace's mother, Evelyn Wall, was a descendant of several convicts, Ann Forbes (First Fleet), Thomas Huxley (third fleet), Catherine Edwards (third fleet), William Yardley (second fleet), Thomas Wall and William Davies.
Horace was originally a miner. According to my mother he was, at some time, also a member or, at least, associated with, the Communist Party, which was not uncommon among miners in the early 1920's (and up to the late 1940's). My mother mentioned that he suffered health problems as a result of his mining years.
In the 1930 electoral role, Horace and his wife Violet are found in Forbes in NSW. To garner an income, Violet became a travelling representative for Alladin Lamps, travelling from property to property showing the wares of that company. My mother, Evelyn (daughter of Horace and Violet) told me stories of them travelling in their car along rough roads through floods and bushfires at times.
In the 1933 electoral role they are in Marrickville. Violet is described as a confectioner. I know from my mother that they ran a confectionery store in Marrickville Road toward the Sydenham end of the shopping street (near the one time Marrickville movie theatre). My mother seemed to think they lost the store due to allowing people to run up debts they could not pay because of the depression.
In the 1936 they are described as Salesman and Saleswoman. I am not sure what they were selling then. They were then living at 85 Warren Rd, in Marrickville. They moved at least once more to 20 Francis St, in Marrickville before finally purchasing 47 and 51 Warren Road, in Marrickville between 1937 and 1943.
In 1950 Violet divorced Horace. Horace died the following year at Randwick. Horace and Violet are buried together in the Botany cemetery.
